I grew in Cov thru 60's and Sky Blues fanatic under Jimmy Hill Did my apprenticeship at R-R in Parkside early 70's. Mums 79 still living in Tile Hill. I'm retired early living overseas .I spent time in beautiful Hamburg which was totally destroyed in WW2, and asked my German friends to come back and bomb Coventry again so we could make it as nice as Hamburg! I go back to see mum each year. I walk Earlsdon where I grew up and think what a dump it all is. I was a lucky Coventry Kid, I escaped !

I was born in 54, and Coventry was a beautiful place to be growing up back in the 60’s and 70’s. I think the town planners have done more damage to the city centre and it’s vibrant spirit than Hitler’s’ bombs ever could. O.K, I may be a bit nostalgic and I know things can’t stay the same forever, but the place is a fekkin’ mess now.

Such marvellous clips - it's so sad watching all that wonderful fauna slowly being turned into concrete! If only Harry Shaw did time travel trips. Ah look - traffic. Roads. People - lots of them. Everything busy - and look - we are all still here. Too many busy body pressure groups inputting their zany ideas - and just look where we are now?

Those old pictures show how green and pleasant Coventry used to be. It's not just our imagination; it really was nicer. There's so much clutter and mess now. Recycling bins, ugly poles and CCTV and concrete everywhere - plus inferior humans littering everywhere. I was born there in 1963 and left in 1981. I'm so glad I got out and certainly never visit the modern dump it's become. It can never be restored again in our lifetimes.

hi there , i was born in coventry in may 1963 and we moved to leicester in september 1968 as my dad got seconded there , with his job. we lived on crossway road off green lane. i hate what they'r doing to coventry. but coventry will always remain in my heart cos it's a great place. even if i have lived in leicester for 42 years.

@Steerpike07 I am also from Coventry and born in 1962. It was beautiful in the 60's and even the 70's. They ruined with Cathedral Lanes and that horrible canopy. I live in South Carolina but have fond memories of Broadgate when it was also the bus terminus like pool meadow.

The council turned the whole place into a zombie walk around. Used to be an engineering/manufacturing hub, now everyone has a PhD in something or other. I believe the Hotel Leofric was turned into a 'student accommodation'. Sacrilege!! Greetings from an 'old school' Coventry apprentice residing in the USA.

Worked in the Owen Owen Store when it first opened was lovely then also Hotel Leofric where we had our fashion parades loved the City then remember the Market on the Hotels site

I was born here in the mid ‘50’s. Coventry was a beautiful City till the council started messing around with it in the early ‘80’s. Now, I’m afraid, it’s just a mess with absolutely no character.

Beautiful Coventry where as it gone wrong.. blame the useless council and all the money they have wasted.What a lovely area the centre around the Lady Godiva Statue was a pleasent place to go , now just concrete and block paving. Blame Donald Gibson for concrete reconstruction after the war. I lived and worked in Coventry and loved it, dont go there now.

Yeah I remember punks and skinheads drinking there and hassling tourists. Also remember some new year's celebrations at the Lady Godiva statue ... with the police watching on and giving people 5 minutes to enjoy themselves before clearing the area. Cathedral Lanes has to be one of the biggest disasters in a long line of planning disasters to afflict Cov over the years.

the old broadgate was the best look now its just one concrete city look now very drab!

Really good video, nice photos of old broadgate. Unfortunately i have grown up with the tent and cathedral lanes so never saw the garden and i cant see why they decided to ruin such a great centre piece that would attract far more tourism and look far more attractive as you can see greenery and the cathedral. Luckily the new jerde plans will get rid of cathedral lanes and replace the garden, we'll have to wait and see.

Nice photos. Makes me nostalgic. But they destroyed Broadgate by taking away the lovely grass & flower beds. Music too much.

oh no, we can't have some open space and greenery, we have to pave it, fence off lady godiva, and surround her with hideous postmodern architecture.

I was born in the 80s so don't remember the gardens. I remember Allders thou which is now awful Primark! :(

I have fond memories of violence after a night on the old snakebite in the penny black or the silver sword, oh them was the days.....seriously though wtf happened to town planners and achitects ? maybe invite the Luftwaffe back to sort it out.
