Thanks to MICHAL M for making this video possible. Without his involvement and letting me know about this removal, this video would not be here today.
One of the last sirens to be removed is from the roof of Camberley shopping centre. CRANE? HOIST? Nope, just lowered the old fashioned way!
THEN we get to examine it!

I have some fond memories of this particular siren! I used to work in the Sainsburys inside the centre, and had this odd habit of always taking my cigarette breaks on that level of the car-park at about 09:55. Always ended up getting the full blast of the siren test, and did wonder if it was located somewhere on the car park! 🙃 Many thanks for confirming my suspicions at long last! 😀 (Even if I had mistakenly thought it was at the top of the exit spiral diagonally SE of the lift tower! 😇)

Not hard to see why, when they almost all had shutter issues and the cables activating them (phone lines) were nicked every so often... as sad as it is, nothing lasts forever- at least we got the chance.

So wait they still need a method for escape, I thought maybe broadmore had changed its design and wasnt in need of an escape warning anymore. Edit- im from america so i have no idea of anything about broadmore outside of its a mental hospital. this is stupid, social media and texts is the dumbest idea, Keep using these things that way everyone knows an escape has happened

I still think the old alarm system was better so that all could hear it whether your phone, radio or whatever was on or off! Today it's a joke how long it takes to hear of the latest emergency!

It was 1982. My parents were looking to move our family from Byfleet in Surrey, to a new house within driving distance of the Blackwater trading estate, where my dad had just got a new job. We went to look at a house on the Owlsmoor housing estate. I was not quite 12 at the time. Everything was fine until we were being shown the back garden. My dad asked what the big building on the nearby hill was. (Uh-oh! ) It was a Monday, and it was 9:59am. 60 seconds later.... I had never heard anything like this in my life before. As the sirens started up, I jumped up with my hands over my ears and screamed. I landed on the ground in a ball on my left side hyperventilating. ( I also spontaneously emptied both my bowel and bladder, I was so scared!) That was 40 years ago. We ended up moving to Frimley instead. Every time I heard the siren after that, I used to start to feel anxious. Sometimes, I still have nightmares about that day, even now! In 2020, I discovered that not only was I born with ADHHD, but I'm also autistic.(That explains my initial reaction.) For me, it's such a relief to not hear that siren anywhere outside KZfaq any more.

Very interesting story and thanks for commenting. I've looked up this area, you had 3 sirens near to that location. The nearest was in Sandhurst School which is in the Owlsmoor housing estate. Nearest to that, the Sandhurst Military Academy (south) and to the east is Crowthorne Station. Wow! So many memories of when I lived in College Ride, Bagshot, adjacent to Swinley Forest. Hearing the siren tested regularly and sometimes for real when subsequently Vicarage Road was cordoned off and there was a lot of activity outside our house.

Such a shame. I’m going through a similar issue. The siren system for the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) here in California in the US, is removing their sirens since the plant is decommissioned, and the cities decided they didn’t want to keep them for other emergencies like tsunamis, since the plant and the cities with the sirens are close to the ocean. What also sucks is their siren system was the first siren system I’ve ever seen, since we have a timeshare condo in one of the cities down there with sirens, and is the one that got me into sirens. So it’s hard to see them go, as they are the sirens I first saw, and got me into them. And I can remember first seeing them when I was young and had a memory around 16 years ago. I’d see them when we’re driving down to our timeshare, and still do, but now it will be no more 😭 Also RIP Broadmoor CS8s. Greetings from the US!

Nice. I was wondering when these were going to get removed. I recently acquired a siren of my own. It's nothing like this though. It's a horn system. I have a video of it on my channel.

Nice close up examination of the siren and junction box ! Also, the Klaxon CS8 placed vertically like that is basically a Federal Signal 3T22 without its horns and cap, as both sirens have a rotor of 12 and another of 10 ports, and have solenoids to control the shutters or dampers to do the hi-lo signal, the only thing is that the hi-lo on the 3T22 is faster.

since the 3t22 runs on 60hz it sounds different aswell, the 3t22 also runs at a higher top rpm meaning it sounds a bit higher pitched

@@vantaaax Yes indeed, but plugging a XT22 (in this case 3T22 due to the solenoids) on European 50 Hz power would make it sound exactly like this one, just like how plugging a UK siren on North American 60 Hz power makes it soubd exactly like an XT22 (see the CLM sirens for an example, they're basically British sirens made under a licence)

If you look up close, the shutters on the CS8 are oval and at a near 45 angle whereas the ones on the 3t22 are cylindrical and at a 90 degree angle

Jersey (Channel Islands) have a load of the old Carter sirens like that. They are still technically in service, but very rarely tested and never to a schedule (except for one down at the fuel farm).

We have similar sirens over in jersey (channel islands), they are everywhere but never tested and seemingly abandoned. I think they were cold war era but I can't find any info in them

Interesting video, gotta go watch the next part of this still but it's really interesting for me to see this kind of stuff, don't have it here sadly. For some reason I always wanted to have one, but for obvious reasons I can't really just put up a siren. Also I spot a Roshni sounder on the side of that building. EDIT: my failure to type properly

That's why in the US we would have just rented a small crane for a couple hours. Much more expensive but way simpler to comply with OSHA that way less headaches down the road from the clipboard warriors.

@@alec4672 might not have had the headroom coming up through the carpark to fit any size of crane. No reason the couldn't use a small jib and block and tackle to get it down

I remember on my days off getting woken up by it and at a club when I was 7 it went off at 12 but it’s was because of a fault but we still had a police officer at the club to keep us safe

nice one! I did ask many years back, but the outcome was they had all the sirens back and didn't hand any out. Probably the best idea, because if one was powered up then it'd be Broadmoor that would be held irresponsible for handing them out in the first place.

They are stored somewhere in Broadmoor, but this was just to keep them within the management of broadmoor rather than for spare parts. None of these sirens exist anymore, so no need to keep spares for them. Having one of these powered up by a member of the public would cause people to point the finger as to why these were released in the first place. Broadmoor is a secure hospital and not an organisation that needs to get involved with what happens to the sirens. So they've either been scrapped already, or they're held somewhere.

I grew up in oak ridge, tn. It’s where they enriched the uranium for the atomic bombs used in wwII. The Y-12 National Security Center is still there. They refurbish nuclear warheads for missiles. They have sirens they test every month.

We don't know exactly what they're doing to them, someone from the hospital said they will be given to museums, then the trust board will decide to do with the rest of the equipment. The contractors removing the siren said that they might put them on Ebay to raise money for charity.

@@MichalM What’s actually the reason for removing them in the first place? Why can’t they just leave them up there, even if they stopped the testing. This one can’t even be seen anyway, so it can’t be for visual reasons.

Hire of crane is expensive and in this case unneccessary. No-where to put the crane on the ground, and cannot drive a crane up all the levels in the car park as it's far too tall.

hey matt, the CS8 doesn't weigh 80kg, from the documentation I received from Klaxon says the CS8 weighs 122kg, each shutter weighs 19kg and 84kg for the main siren body. a GP8 weighs 84kg and with two shutters weighing 19kg each. comes to 122kg, thought you'd like to know

@@Duderocks5539 That's the issue we have, we don't think they'll be giving the siren away to members of the public, only to the museums. I'm trying to organise a visit to the removal of siren G, but no reply yet, and the siren might have been taken down already!

Nope, because if they were sold then potentially someone could run one up, if anyone complained it could reach the media, then Broadmoor would be held irresponsible for selling them in the first place. Loads of people asked for one back in 2018/19, but everyone was denied. Don't know what happened to them, they are in the hands of Broadmoor (could have been scrapped, don't know).

The remote sirens - nope, they're gone for good. There is now an electronic (speaker) siren inside the grounds of the new hospital, but you'll not hear that anymore as they test it silently.

Are they selling these on? I'd be tempted to buy one. From what I've heard the Castle Castings sirens are 75KG so with the dampers 80KG sounds about right.

@@Alexis_du_60 I'm installing these as flood signals around my area if they are sold. But, I would imagine they would be very expensive when the motor alone is well over £1000, as well as 3-phase power and the phone line to link them all together. I'm thinking sirens A, B, C, G, H, and I.

If they can't decide what to do with them, probably. At the moment, they're saying that museums are being prioritised. The museums claim whatever equipment they'd like to exhibit, then the trust board decide what to do with the rest.

The sirens are supposedly going to museums. When the museums have claimed the equipment they want to exhibit, the trust board will decide what to do with them.

Supposedly they're being given to museums. When they have claimed all the equipment they want to exhibit, the trust board will decide who to give the rest of the equipment to.

you should had asked how much is it? if there getting rid of it they may give it for free! i got the huge peanutbutter cup that holds a giant crystal ball fountain from the shorthills mall. the mall kept the ball now i got the giant peanutbutter cup. i turned it upside down and put it in my garden so it looks like a peanutbutter cup. i had to borrow my bosses hydraulic portable crane to get it in my bosses van to get it to my house. the mall were doing some renoventions while i was there so i asked how much is the giant peanutbutter cup. they said take it if you could lift it. i said ill be back. sure enough i was back with the little crane and got it home. the workers even asked what im gonna do with it. i said its a huge pot for the garden. it was very heavy! over the years i have it i think i wanna make it a fountain now.

There was already a long long list of people requesting the same. None of the sirens were up for sale for a whole host of reasons.
