Listen in for an exciting performance and discussion with the cast of Broadway's "Hadestown", nominated for 14 2019 Tony Awards, including Best Musical!
2:35 - Anais performing "I Raise My Cup"
4:50 - Eva and Reeve performing "All I've Ever Known"
Panelists include: Anais Mitchell (Book, lyrics, music), Andre De Shields (Hermes), Reeve Carney (Orpheus), Eva Noblezada (Eurydice), Amber Gray (Persephone), and Patrick Page (Hades).
HADESTOWN intertwines two mythic tales - that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone - as it invites you on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Mitchell’s beguiling melodies and Chavkin’s poetic imagination pit industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love. Performed by a vibrant ensemble of actors, dancers and singers, HADESTOWN is a haunting and hopeful theatrical experience that grabs you and never lets go.

I originally listened to the cast album w/o knowing what most of the cast looked like, and when Little Songbird came on, it was extremely easy to picture him as a demonic lord of darkness, barely human-sounding. Perfect casting.

I just want to share a story that happened to me today. I had the pleasure of watching this show two days ago and was having dinner tonight in a restaurant nearby the hadestown and the prom theatres. My family and I had been watching some of the cast members from both shows walk by and quietly freaking out about them while we ate, but we'd already stagedoored both shows and were in the middle of eating our pasta. As we were standing up to leave the restaurant, André de Shields walked by and my mom literally lost it. He hadn't come out to stagedoor the other day and she'd had a little too much wine, so she just ran out of the restaurant and started chatting him up. We all immediately ran over, both out of excitement, but also concern for him lol. He proceeded to listen carefully to my mom talk all about how we'd come from Peru to see the show and how we were such big fans. He then shook each of our hands individually and asked for our names, repeating them and pronouncing them perfectly even though they were all very hispanic names. He listened to us talk about how much the show meant to us and when we asked for a picture he suggested we all walk back to the theatre and take the picture with it in the background. We talked all the way back and he was just incredible. He feels like a magical person, I don't know how to explain it. He just connects with you in a different way. I've been lucky enough to travel to nyc a lot of times and go to a lot of shows and meet people afterwards, but I've never had an experience like this. What a sublime human being.

Therefore, not perpetuating this precious process in order to rid the mortal world of undesirable presences could be considered adjacent to crime, and a punishment inflicted upon oneself and one's kinship. Love Andre de Shields - inter generational story - love this. Loved the Hades character down to the leather jacket and dark glasses and the voice - the ultimate bad boy that appeals to women of all ages. This is an amazing production. Voices match the characters to a tee. Have seen the production twice. "it's a sad song but we're gonna sing it anyway" - per Andre, Anais is an oracle. A contemporary prophet. Oracles live at the navel of the universe. There is an umbilical cord that connects the highest point Orpheus to the lowest point Hades and Hermes is the connector. Orpheus cannot succeed so each of us gets to test ourselves over and over again. The paragon of animal - connect heaven and hell - why is it all miserable? Why is life so hard and then we die. Hero of a thousand faces- Your life is about following your bliss. Joseph Campbell Beautiful interview. Thank you for this amazing production

With the question about vocal range....I love that Anais talks about the metaphorical aspect of Hades vocal range and Orpheus's vocal range. I loved that myself! This was an amazing conversation about an amazing show!!

Wonderfully insightful. Andre de Shields, you are a natural teacher. If only the moderator had said " like " a few less times.

this is a brilliant interpretation of the Orpheus story Though, I am surprised the Offenbach operetta was not mentioned as part of the source of the story. I was in the chorus of my schools production of the story, in 1975 which was a fantastic experience

I just saw this musical today! I loved it! Also, the family tree of the Greek Gods is a family pretzel: Persephone's parents Demeter and Zeus, are siblings (whose parents are also siblings). Then after Persephone is born, Zeus broke up with Demeter and FORCED his other full-sister Hera to marry him then constantly cheated on her. Their cousin Maia bore him Hermes, their other cousin Leto bore him Apollo who some say is the father of Orpheus, and their Aunt Mnemosyne bore him the Muses who's leader Calliope is the mother of Orpheus. Also Hades is a full brother of Zeus, Demeter, and Hera.

Wait so if Orpheus' parents are Apollo and Calliope, why is he a mortal?

@@wuttatota148 Beats me. Although in other myths Orpheus's father is a mortal (King Oeagrus), making him a demi-god.
