A buddy of mine used to work in a Times Square record store around 1999, where Ms. Holiday was a frequent customer. He ALWAYS said that she was one of the funniest, sweetest most humble people whom he'd ever had the pleasure of meeting.

I can attest to this because I worked in a building where she conducted her business in Atlanta, GA and I'd see her every week. Since I too am a singer, we had great discussions about Music and the industry. She once told me that she sometimes grew tired of singing this song, but I reminded her that it was her 'Signature' song like 'Respect' was for Aretha Franklin. Ms Franklin once said she also was weary of singing Respect, but she said it paid the bills, and Respect was what people always wanted to hear, so she adjusted. Jennifer agreed, and I also told her that she absolutely KILLED it every time she sang it. After 40 years of singing it, it would only continue to get better like Fine Wine. So glad she protects her voice with no smoking and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

The thing that makes Ms. Holliday so special as a performer is her ability to play with the audience. She sings so dynamically and evocatively because she doesn't "give it to you" the way you expect: when you expect her to go all out vocally, she holds back; then when you least expect it, she gives everything to you, all while being so natural about it. Wow.

What most people don't get it is the fact that anyone can be trained to sing and study hard , but only those who are born with that gift are the ones who will shine , Jennifer Holliday is a mesmerizing and unique vocalist , what she has, comes from her soul and being , please don't you even dare to compare anyone to Ms.Jennifer , I've seen her live many times and she sings with her soul that's a very rare gift , no one can touch her vocals , because absolutely no one can touch her greatness !

Some singers fall victims to their own voices because they are so powerful the industry doesn't know what to do with them. They can't be put neatly into a genre, so they have a hit here and there and then fade off into the sunset. Unfortunately, I think that describes the great talent of Jennifer Holliday's voice that remains raw and unrefined.

I’m so IMPRESSED on how she took IMMACULATE CARE OF HER INSTRUMENT!!! She SANGS Powerful and Hard and the RUNS ARE DEADLY!!!! How has she KEPT THAT VOICE IN TACKED for Sooooo long singing, I mean SANGING Sooooo hard. This song is part of the soundtrack to my early days as a youth.

Remember seeing her perform in Dreamgirls in Atlanta in the early 2000's.... I was on a 1st date, while she was singing this song, my inner drag queen jumped out and I was screaming, clapping, dancing and lip syncing... needless to say, we only had 1 date... but I live to say I seen the one and only Ms. Holiday perform this song live.

Well, when you watch and listen a video like that, when you know, not personally, but when you have followed Jennifer Holliday all your life and you know deep down, what she has been through, it's a standing ovation, it's really something you absolutely need to do for her, because she had a TOUGH life, she has never been accepted for who she was, and who she is. She kept going no matter what with a strong determination, although she went through depression and hard time. So I stand up for her, because I think she is amazing. And also a dear kind hearted person. Thank you Jennifer. We love you

I love how after she bows to the audience, she turns to acknowledge the band. It's such a subtle move, but it is important. She is the star in that moment, but she remembered all of the people behind her, who helped her shine.
