Start sprouting your own broccoli seeds using this quick and easy mason jar sprouting kit method (the secret is the inverted jar stand!) Sulforaphane is a powerful natural plant compound that has been shown to offer numerous cancer fighting, anti-aging and heart healthy benefits and broccoli sprouts are one of the highest sulforaphane content foods. Save money and have fun watching your seeds grow into loads of healthy microgreens in just a few days!
NEW NOTE FEB 2023: The exact kit I used in my demo is no longer available on Amazon so I've subbed in a link below to a comparable one. The only difference I can see is that you get a single drainage tray instead of two separated ones and plastic screen mesh lids instead of metal ones but neither of these should make any difference.

@@tabathaogost4982 sorry this reply is so late! But what i do to finish is dunk the sprouts in a big bowl of water, scoop off the brown seed husks that float to the top and then finally run the sprouts through my salad spinner to get all the moisture out of there. Then yes, they go right back into that jar with a solid lid instead of the strainer lid and into the fridge. Eat within 3 or 4 days is my timeframe.

Just a reminder that most of these "kits" can be made from common household objects. I use a loaf pan, an old spice shaker in the back to raise the jar, a mason jar covered by a mesh bag for the spouts and a rubberband, and a large bottlecap in front to keep the jar from hitting the front. Much cheaper and better for the environment than buying a special purpose setup.

Thank you for watching my video! I usually put my fully sprouted jars on a sunny windowsill on day 6 (or whatever day that they are fully sprouted for you) before putting them in the fridge for storing. 10 minutes on each side is fine, I turn them around every few minutes to make sure they all get a little exposure. It isn't necessary to do this, but a little extra chlorophyll never hurts!

The best way I've found is to put the sprouts in a large bowl of water and gently push them down under the water repeatedly..the hulls will float up and you scoop them off. You have to repeat this process a few times and even then you won't get all of them but it's better than nothing

Hey Mary, thank you for your great video. In your expert opinion, how long should I leave my seeds in the jars more? They have sprouted very nicely however they don’t have any green leaves but I’d say the sprouts are twice the size of the seeds. I guess what I’m asking is when should I eat these bad boys?
@marykayriley
@marykayriley Жыл бұрын
Hi it sounds like you had a decent harvest but as you have seen finished sprouts yield can easily be many times the size of the seeds they started as. You can eat sprouts at any point in the process. In fact eating sprouts when they're yellow and tender is when they have the highest sulphoraphane content and a milder flavor too. But you probably want a bigger harvest next time right? Maybe try putting an extra little scoop of seeds in there? If all your seeds in the jar sprouted then you've got the room for more

Did you determine in your sprouting experiment how the old seeds compared to the fresh seeds as far as the quality of their sprout and volume of sprouts?
@marykayriley
@marykayriley Жыл бұрын
I saw no difference really, maybe a slightly less robust volume in the older seeds than the newer ones but both jars were really full of sprouts and there was no distinguishable taste difference. Based on this experiment I can say I wouldn't give up on old seeds if you have them.
@CarbageMan
@CarbageMan Жыл бұрын
Usually, a few more of the older seeds would have died, based on the time they've been sitting and environmental conditions. I used to have a client that was a seed producer, and they kept the seeds under climate control. They actually tested the germination rate of their seeds and sold them as "pure live seed," which basically meant they over-filled the container to accommodate for the seeds that would not sprout.

I usually do just eat them as they don't really bother me. But some people dislike them, they can be bitter and get stuck in your teeth. The way I've seen it done is to dunk your finished sprouts in a deep bowl under slowly running cold water, kinda massage them under the water, and the husks will float to the top so you can scoop them away bit by bit. It is a little time consuming and it doesn't get rid of all of them. I always wonder how the ones in the store are so clean of them

I usually get through a full jar of sprouts in about 3-4 days. They are best eaten really fresh, both for taste and nutritional content. They are okay for a few days in the fridge but don't let them get pushed to the back and forget about them, after a week or so they'll start to lose their moisture, dry out and become unpleasantly bitter. I store them in the fridge in a sealed bowl lined with paper towel. I have only two jars that I rotate but if you plan on eating a lot of sprouts then three might be better for you so you won't run out.

@marykayriley
@marykayriley 2 ай бұрын
I'm going to be honest, I have no idea why that's happening. It has never happened to me. I just did a bunch of Google searching and the issue wasn't really being addressed anywhere. Most of the articles on the web refer to Chia seeds when it comes to gelling and the science behind it is complicated but it has everything to do with their chemical composition which is very different from broccoli seeds. So I don't know why that is happening to you, the only thing i can suggest is that maybe somehow that batch of seeds got some chia seeds or other mucilage-producing seeds mixed into it and are messing up the whole batch. Maybe start with some new seeds.

Hi, usually on day 2 and three the husks start floating on top of the seedlings as they get free and you can scoop them off pretty easily with a spoon. Also, when the sprouts are completely sprouted, you can pull them apart gently and then submerge the whole thing in a bowl of water, the husks will rise to the top and you can pour them off.

@marykayriley
@marykayriley Жыл бұрын
It's hard to say, do you use a setup like this one with the jars inverted? I've tried a few different methods and sprouting kits but this one with the inverted jars was far more successful than any of the others where the seeds are sitting in the bottom of whatever the receptacle is. I think that they wind up staying wetter that way and don't get as good air circulation (which keeps them drier throughout the process and seems to boost their synthesis into sprouts).

I have never frozen them so I don't know. And also mine never last six days, ive always eaten them way before that. But id guess that by day 6 they would be past their prime; the earlier sprouts are eaten the more potent their health benefits are. Sulphoraphane content is highest when the sprouts are young. So I don't sprout in big batches, I make a jar or two and eat them up in a couple days. I keep a constant cycle of jars going so that i never run out and they're always fresh

@@leticiastabrino1845 there are quite a few factors that can affect sprouting. If your seeds fail to launch their natural germination process was not simulated. As there aren't that many factors involved, the first culprit is usually not enough water. Although this is pretty unusual, most of the time people report that their seeds get water logged and rot from inadequate drainage. How old are your seeds? What kind of climate do you live in?

I saw another video where this was addressed, they begin with a one hour soak adding a small amount of soap and apple cider vinegar to clean bacteria from the jar and seeds. They rinse 4-6 good rinses and then soak in filtered water for 4-6 hours to begin the process. Maybe this will help your sprouts ???

What happens in the colder months, like now?
@marykayriley
@marykayriley Жыл бұрын
Hi, yes I think you're right on here. In my experience broccoli seeds do not do well if they are kept wet. I live in the opposite climate from you, it's very dry in the air here in the high desert and my sprouts had ample opportunity to evaporate off moisture between rinses. I had tried a different seed sprouting device in the past, one with a seeds tray that the seeds sat in, but they were pretty much sitting in a slight amount of water all day and they went all moldy very quickly as you say you've experienced. If you were to try again I'd say to find a way to increase airflow to your seeds as they are sprouting and you may have a better result. Good luck!

I have been told that, if humidity is a problem, you can avoid moldiness if you add 1/4 tsp of citric acid to each rinse.

They don't have to be kept in the dark but I don't set them in direct sunlight until the very last day when they have become sprouts; putting them in a sunny spot on the counter for an hour helps them green up.

Yes of course! At this point they are ready to eat. Some people like to remove some of the seed husks that are still mingling with the sprouts, to do this just dunk them in a bowl of water and the husks will float. Scoop them off.

I thought the same thing but don't worry, unless your seeds have been sitting idle in the jar for a week then no it's not mold. They are root hairs and they are a great sign that your seeds are starting to sprout. Here's another article to back me up: www.quantummicrogreens.com/blog-1/mold-or-root-hairs-on-microgreens#:~:text=Root%20hairs%20look%20like%20tiny,growing%20out%20of%20broccoli%20microgreens.

Sprouts are temperamental little things, a small change in their environmental factors such as temperature or humidity level can make a huge difference in how well it goes. In that video i made it was summertime here in the southwestern US where humidity levels are extremely low so the air is very dry. My skin hates it, but my sprouts love it! My first piece of advice is to focus on keeping your seeds/sprouts as dry and well drained as possible between rinsings. Keeping the jar inverted so they aren't sitting in residual standing water as shown in the video was a revelation for me. If you don't have an inverted jar system set up I recommend trying one out. And if you live in a humid climate try running a fan near your jars, the air circulation will help them avoid getting soggy which may stimulate better growth. Like anything else in life you have to tinker a bit to find what works best for you.

Thanks so much! I use the same kind jars, but I live in the UP MI, I guess the temperature play a role, I will try my best to keep it dry between rinses😊

How come you don't put yours in a cabinet or covered with a towel to keep them in the darkness when all the other people do
@marykayriley
@marykayriley Жыл бұрын
hi, I suppose that was another happy accident this time around--I used to do that too and it is widely accepted that many kinds of seeds germinate best in the dark because light at early stages can stunt their growth. However as you can see by my great results that just didn't happen for me. I got loads of sprouts and there was no problem leaving them on the countertop the entire process through. I didn't ever let them sit in direct sunlight though, that may have proven detrimental but I can't say for sure. It may be that broccoli sprouts do not need to be in the dark after all. I'm not a botanist, just going off my own results. It could also have to do with other factors in my environment, extreme dry climate here in the high desert I believe is one of the things that contributed to these seeds doing so well; broccoli seeds can have a difficult time if they are not well drained and I think keeping them covered up in a dark cabinet could reduce the airflow to the seeds, keeping them too wet and not producing good results. It's all trial and error though if you watch my other video where I used a different device where the seeds sat in water too much, I had terrible results and the seeds went moldy by day three. So keeping seeds well drained and aerated I think is very important.

I have a question with this method, where does the greens get its nutrients from or are these low nutrients foods? My understanding of plants is they take nutrients from the soil.
@marykayriley
@marykayriley 3 ай бұрын
hi, good question, and you're partially correct in that plants do take nutrients from soil. But we aren't growing plants here, our goal is simply to get the seeds to germinate and create a sprout. All of the many health benefits of a sprout come from within the seed itself. If you wanted to grow the broccoli seeds into a plant, you would technically be growing microgreens and instead of using the jar method I show in this video you would sow the seeds in soil after soaking so that they would take root, create root systems and become little plants and grow, supported by the soil they're planted in. But we're just making sprouts here. And broccoli sprouts are extremely nutrient dense and contain high amounts of vitamins A, B6 and C and are especially prized for their very high sulforaphane (a potent antioxidant) content, all with no help from soil.

I've watched a few videos on KZfaq regarding brocolli sprouts. Everyone seems to say to use filtered water. I don't have a water filtration system in my home but use bottled water. I refuse to drink anything coming out of my faucet here in Vegas. I keep my jars in a large bedroom closet which I don't go in hardly at all. Have followed the instructions but day 2 morning and things look like day zero when I left the seeds in the jar with the water in them. Do you really need filtered water?
@marykayriley
@marykayriley Жыл бұрын
I don't drink my tap water here either, i have one of those counter top Brita dispensers and i use that for drinking and sprouting. I have seen the dispensers at the goodwill and i get the filters for it at Target. I do go through a lot of filters but they're relatively affordable. I can't say for sure whether filtered water is necessarily going to provide a higher yield than tap water when sprouting, i haven't done that experiment yet. It's more to do with the same reasons that you don't drink your tap water, if you don't trust it enough to drink it you likely shouldn't make sprouts with it either. Your seeds will be soaking up everything that's in that tap water and if your water smells of chlorine (like mine does) that probably isn't the best
