Utah's NHL team is for the community and will be named with help from the community. In partnership with Qualtrics, the leading feedback and experience management provider, and Doubleday & Cartwright, a highly acclaimed creative consultancy and design studio, Smith Entertainment Group (SEG) has created a multi-phase branding process for fans to vote on the name.
The first round starts today and will be open until May 22. We invite fans to vote for up to four preferred names from this initial list of 20 options, which was compiled following the initial survey issued on social media. Each fan can only vote one time.
We will announce the next round of fan favorites and more details on future steps in the name selection process later this summer.
Qualtrics will employ best practice survey research methodology to ensure fairness, accuracy, and unbiased results including randomization, geo-location identification, progressive discrete choice analysis, the prevention of ballot box stuffing, encrypted data collection and storage. Backend analysis will also include deduplication and best practice statistical methods to ensure data integrity.
Utah’s NHL franchise will don jerseys that display UTAH during their inaugural season (2024-25).
Once the team name has been selected, SEG will work diligently to craft the team identity - logo, mascot, colors, and other branding elements - which will debut for the 2025-26 NHL season.

Bees are more than the state insect, the nickname of the state is the Beehive state. It’s a mindset. At its core, when it is best, Utah is about community and about working hard in an effort to bring about united success. Utah is, naturally, a shit environment. Low water, hard to grow anything, sandy barren soil, and yet by working as a community early settlers made a living in a hard environment. As a native Utahn, I love the bee and beehive imagery as a cultural symbol of Utah’s history and hopefully the future.

As a NorCal transplant in SLC, I have no legitimate dog in the fight, but I have embraced the awesome culture here and things like Swarm, Hive, Mountaineer, Squall, etc. do have local significance. The ultimate team name isn’t for Californians, New Yorkers, or Canadians. It’s for Utahns. That said, I did vote, but I voted for things that I think Utahns are proud of: The mountains, the Beehive State, and skiing the best snow on earth. So…Mountaineers, Swarm, Hive, Black Diamonds.

Here's one nobody is thinking of: "The Utah Buzz". Why the Buzz? 1) Utah is the Beehive State; 2) It correlates with the NBA Utah Jazz which will occupy the same building (four letter team name with "zz" at the end of it; 3) It's a lot less complicate that a lot of the other 20 names which frankly don't make much sense. To me it's easy and flows much better than any of the other names on this list.

I don't necessarily like the Yeti, and am okay with it, but I think you are right that when the bracket is finished that Utah Hockey fans, and non-Hockey fans who help to choose the name, will pick Yeti and the Utah team will be the Utah Yeti. It's almost certainly going to be the name that's chosen.

There’s been a few times where teams moved cities and kept their team name for a year. New Orleans Hornets and Utah Jazz. Hornets changed their name to pelicans and the Jazz name just stuck.

My only problem with any of the snow themes including the Yeti is that it leans too close to the theming of the Avalanche which are division rivals. Think Swarm or Outlaws are a much better choice.

when choosing a name, take into account the likely short version for multi-syllable ones, e.g. Dragons/Drag(s), Mammoth/Mamm(s), Outlaws/Out(s), etc. Why not just select a one-syllable name and be done with it.

Go through the names of just about every other major league team and pretend that you saw that name on the bracket. How would people feel about those names? Would they think they were bad as well? Point is that we’ll eventually come around to accepting whatever name is chosen.

If there are any caribou in Utah, they are at the Hogle Zoo. Could be a good name if there's ever a team in Alaska, but it doesn't make any sense for Utah. Of course, there aren't any Yetis in Utah, either. But then, I doubt that there are any Yetis anywhere else, either. So that one doesn't bother me, even though the legendary home of the creature is in the Himalayas, not the Rockies. Outlaws works - I've seen some wondering what that has to do with Utah, but in fact many of the famous western outlaws like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid had strong Utah ties and probably many more operated at least occasionally in Utah. I hadn't seen Swarm suggested before. I like it, but I'm going to have to think about it for a while before voting for it. I'm a little surprised by all of the discussion over Utah Hockey Club as a permanent name, I always saw its inclusion in the trademarked names as a hedge against the probability that the final name wouldn't be chosen in time for this season. (Same with Utah HC.)

Swarm is definitely a fit since its the beehive state and they can do a mascot of a angry Bee 🐝 . The Delta Center is nicknamed (The Hive) and the players along with there fans is like a angry army of Swarm bees 🐝 ready to defend.

Hey Brodhead I like your show but I think the reason for taking so long with a team name is so they can sell an extra set of jerseys to the fans in their second season. He is a smart man and knows that everyone will rush to get the no name jersey and then get the one with the new logo in the second season. What are your thoughts?

A couple things. I would stay away from names that could have a negative or blow-back effect especially if the team isn't doing well. Like Mammoth; 'And the Mammoth are still extinct' or 'And once again Utah takes a Powder'. OK, taking a powder is from the 1920s but it isn't a good thing. I'd say choose something that is aggressive, maybe dangerous, not passive like Canyon or Glaciers. As I said below, even as a Coyotes fan was less a fan of the name. Coyotes as an animal are more a scavenger than a top level predator (Hey, Nashville Predators...). As for their first year sweater. If I were a Salt Lake hockey fan, I would love, love to have a first year replica. Has any other team ever just been the city or state name? Talk about the collectors value, or to show that you've been a fan from day one. I'd also say that even after choosing permanent name/colors, this should be kept for marketing or maybe even their third sweater.

Here's what to expect: If you dont have a team name, the fans and local media will end up calling them the Utah Jazz since the NBA's Jazz are the only show in town for +40yrs. This is how the football Giants got their name too. They too shared the same Polo Grounds with the baseball Giants. Also happened in the AAFC with the Yankees & Dodgers, Pirates were the only show in town in Pittsburgh too, so when the NHL got there the firstr time around, that hockey team was called the Pittsburgh Pirates. So Utah will likely do the same thing. Besides, there will be no lawsuit since those owners also own the NBA's Jazz. It works!

Every other time in the past, when a team moved, it brought the name from the previous location to their new location or had a new name in place at the start of the following season. For example, the Quebec Nordiques became the Colorado Avalanche, and the original Winnipeg Jets became the Arizona Coyotes, without taking much time to come up with a new name. So why is the Utah hockey team taking so long to find a new name?

Mammoth, Yeti are my top picks. I’m good with Venom or Swarm as well. If we do Swarm, let’s get creative and not use yellow and black, we don’t need more of that in the NHL or Utah. I think Black Diamonds in concept is a cool idea, but I think we should stay away from Black Diamonds or worse Powder. I get we have som great snow for some awesome skiing and snowboarding - but let’s not name our team referencing another winter sport.

Yeah, and the Yeti Company can buy the arena naming rights... Wow, no Utah Saints (like the British EDM team from the 90's)? If they're going to be nameless then they're already Utah HC (or HC Utah, as is custom in Europe), much like the Washington Football Team. Utah's MLS team is already Real Salt Lake so HC Utah would be consistent with that pattern.

Not my market so regardless of geolocation factors I'm not going to fill out the survey. If was to vote, I do like Swarm and Mountaineers. I love the idea of Yeti, but it feels like Infringement on Avs IP as they've been using a yeti on their stuff for years.

I still like the UTAH JACKALOPES! Fir those unfamiliar with the term, it's a Jack Rabbit with antlers. I like the trout jersey, but, switch the trout logo with a Jackalope logo!

Honestly squall is just another version of the storm themed names like Hurricanes or Lightning so it's definitely not the worst option on the board.

Just call the Utah hockey team the Utah Jazz because if the Utah Jazz can work in the NBA then it can work in the NHL as well. I never understood why cities with two teams in two different sports has to use different names?

I’m surprised we haven’t seen the Utah Buzz. It looks like Jazz. Marries current Utah branding (nonsensical as it is) and Bees and could have a Sarnia Sting style thing going on logo wise.

He never said they would be nameless!!! It says their jersey will say Utah. Those are 2 very different things!! They’ll get a name pretty soon, and they’ll get New Jerseys/logos the following season
