Only one, courtesy of a pickup truck. Total destruction (impact burst) of my uppermost lumbar vertebra. Incidentally, the surgeons had to remove one rib to access the injury site to remove the bone fragments, all of which but one missed my spinal cord. The remains of the rib were packed into the hole in my hip, where they took the chunk of bone that they used to fuse across the gap where my L1 vertebra used to reside. I also have a metal plate, screws and rods holding it all in place. All this happened over twenty years ago and I am still riding as much as ever.

I know a guy who played basketball for decades, and he said the worst injury he had was a broken wrist. When he got too old for basketball he took up cycling, and since then has suffered two catastrophic open compound femur fractures, one on each leg. I told him he would have been better off sticking with basketball.

Several weeks ago I was on my way to Student Health at uni to deal with an unrelated health problem I was having when I turned onto a wooden footbridge and immediately lost traction, fell straight on my butt. Luckily, though, it only added insult to injury, rather than more injury. When I got to the health center, I filled out the drop-in form with the important stuff about why I was there, then when it asked about if I'd been hurt recently, I said "Yes." When? "About 15 minutes ago." How? "Fell off bike, bruised pride." The doctor commended me for staying positive.

I've broken 25 bones in about 12 years. Tibia, Fibula, Ankle, 8 metatarsals, collar bone, 4 bones in my hand, nose, skull, scapula, scaphoid, two other bones in my wrist, forearm, rib. Only a few of them were in the same incident and the only ones from cycling were the scapula and collar bone. I have titanium in three of my limbs and a reconstructed shoulder.

In the last stages of broken collar bone recovery. Interestingly I was on Zwift the other night when I dropped my towel, and, desperate to stay in the group draft I was reaching down for it whilst still pedalling like fury. All of a sudden I realised the whole set up was about to go over, and banged my poorly arm against a chair to save myself. It hurt for a while but luckily it's ok. More importantly, I stayed in the draft.

Global cycling network please make one episode about the falls mechanism, and what are the tips to follow in case someone is about to fall, maybe a guide or tips, I broke my lift shoulder in 2020 while training which needed a surgery with implant, then right shoulder non-displaced fracture while sliping on a corner, in both falls I streached out my hand which I shouldn't do as per the doctor, but I could not control my reaction. At the point while falling what can I do to reduce the effect?!

I hit a car in a roundabout (the police were coming through as well!), I just got a little whip lash and when my helmet hit the road it cracked, but I was O.K. I asked the driver to buy me a new helmet, which he kindly agreed to do (he stopped but then drove through as I was coming down a steep hill, I had right of way). His car got a bump in it (that was from me) plus a long scratch from my bike scraping it. It was a wake up call for me to be careful. If I had of been hit by the car front on I would have been run over.

Not a pro by any stretch of the imagination but the only bones I have ever broken were while I was on a bike. I have broken my right collar bone and broken elbow. Funny story about the broken elbow, I didn't know it was broken until 6 weeks later when I went to the Doc and got it x-rayed. The broken piece already started to fuse back with the bone but slightly out of place so now I get to stay slightly abnormal. Ok, so not really a 'haha' funny story.

Could the reason that pro-cyclists break so many bones be down to i) lower bone density due to not doing high-impact exercise, and ii) less skeletal support from muscle on the upper body? If so, isn't there a case for incorporating cross-training and upper-body gym work into our routines as cyclists?

Oh my, I have so much respect for you riders. I only ride on my indoor cycle out of fear of cycling on the roads.
