Broken Cors-Air Engine Starter Fix - Part One

In this video, I dismantle, diagnose and attempt to fix the pull start unit on my Cors-Air Black Bull engine. What I thought would be a relatively simple fix turned out to be a lot more difficult than I anticipated. Watch, three blokes and a 10 tonne press struggle with a very stubborn spring!! I'm no mechanic so please be kind in the comments!!

I have electric start too but it is too weak to start a cold engine!

Spring replaced. Minimal blood loss and both eyes intact. It was a success👍

Ta Fred. I’m motivated by money though! I could have just bought a new starter unit but that’s €200 whereas the spring alone was €40!!

Don’t know if I’d use the word “joy” but it was pretty satisfying when then spring finally popped into place. 👍

Oh my. I had the curl break off on an old Solo 210 engine. I just bent a new curl in the end (with a lot of force) and put it back together. I guess that's normal with these small engines. I would have unwound the new spring and wound it back into the recoil housing mechanism starting from the outside. I don't know if that would be possible with your machine but it's worked for me in the past. Thanks for the video. Can't wait for the next.

The new spring was incredibly stiff. Not sure I would have had the strength to unwind it. If the new one ever breaks in the same place. I might just do as you did and see if I can bend a new tang into the end of the spring. 👍

@@paulieb796 Keep the old spring and try to bend a tang in the end of it. Keep for a spare if it works.

@@johnmackay5288 Thankyou. I wish I’d have seen a video like this before I attempted the fix. I’d have probably just bought a complete pull start mechanism with the springs already fitted!

I spent 12 years in the RAF as an Airframe technician, I wouldn't have tackled that. Either get someone who has done loads or by the whole unit.

I did contemplate buying the whole unit after the tenth trip across the workshop to retrieve the spring. However the feeling of satisfaction when it finally popped in was worth it. 👍

I think like most things with an internal combustion engine, that is where we are ultimately going to end up. I don’t think that the battery duration can compete with an engine just yet though👍

@@paulieb796 Geiger in Germany offers a 90 minute system to replace my Vittorazi Moster . Not cheap but almost no moving parts, vibration or any of the other senseless unreliable and painful aspects of two stroke engines.

Fixed dozens on Skidoos same design ... Simple torch and Bend end of old return spring ... Run for years . No one self sufficent anymore .

Surely the spring would still need to come out of the pulley if I was going to heat it enough to bend otherwise the plastic pulley would melt! Did you manage to heat the spring while it was still in place?

Begs the question, why don't they send the spring out in a new, factory fitted nylon unit? Would be worth paying a few quid extra, to make it a "5 minute job".

The options were to buy a new spring (40 Euros) or a complete pull start unit (200 Euros). Quite a difference in price ! 👍

Bonkers not to sell the spring already in the nylon housing, but can see why you didn't want to buy the complete starter unit, as there is nothing wrong with the outer, metal housing part.@@paulieb796
