I am in the same boat.... But both of my bolts broke. Luckily I have a MiG welder, But the "swing arm buddy" this is new to me, this is what I am putting in. Because I go through this basically every year after winter, I need to Change sprockets and chain, and These damn bolts break off and I think... WHY do they put Steel in Aluminum, but finally this year I realized..... I am the one that put Steel into aluminum when I fixed it last time. So Thanks for the Swing Arm buddy Info. Ordering now.

I would also recommend putting some red loctite on the surface of the insert going into the aluminum. It should help it slide in easier and when it dries it’s not going anywhere.

Not a bad call, but due to the pressure from the axle it should be good… 👍

Just a side thought: The flange of the tapped-in insert works here because there is no mating surface involved. Very nice! However, for all viewers' heads-up, this concept would not work if you are repairing, say, a stripped out bolt hole in the engine cases where the surfaces need to be flat all the way around. In this case, you would need to use the Heli-Coil product, most often the 6mm repair kit.
@DanMX2112
@DanMX2112 Жыл бұрын
Right you are, and a heli-coil can’t work in this application because of the pass through bolt. Good points!

Great video. I recently had some welding done to my swing arm.. no structural damage, but I forgot to take the bolt out. So now there is slag on my bolt in the swing arm. Would you still consider this method?
@DanMX2112
@DanMX2112 5 ай бұрын
If there is slag on the bolt, for sure remove it and replace. This method should be fine, as you should still be able to back the bolt out right?
@onlyshelton
@onlyshelton 5 ай бұрын
@@DanMX2112 well inside the swing arm there is slag because it won’t back out any more.
@DanMX2112
@DanMX2112 5 ай бұрын
@onlyshelton oh snap, well in that case, I would probably try to drill the bolt out as much as possible and try to collapse it to remove it. Otherwise you’ll have a bolt bouncing around in there.

These bolts are stuck mostly due to being rusted inside, Whether you buy a brand new or used always remember to apply grease to every bolt you find. If not these issues happen especially in used and old bikes.
@DanMX2112
@DanMX2112 Жыл бұрын
Right! Corrosion is a monster. Seen some newer bikes too that have had this issue, it’s just a bad deal that we have to deal with it. Not a perfect solution out there to fix it, or I think it would be implemented.

@@DanMX2112 anyone who buys a new dirt bike he must disassemble it and start to apply grease on bolts and screws (ITS A MUST) in it, then its easy for the owner to service it without any issue. I have a 250 nearly 2 decades old, servicing it was difficult due to bolts and screws arent applied grease to smooth it out, now its rusted and tightened, not comming out. My chain adjuster bolt is rusted, it broke off while half is in the swing arm not comming out. Now I have to buy new bolts and screws. Completely a waste of time and money. If grease was applied there would have being no issue. Hope this is a lesson for everyone Thanks and God bless you all.

I think when you heated it it weakened the aluminium to the point the threads came out.. But Jeeesh why don't they just design it with a steel insert in the first place? I was going to buy one... Realized that when I bought my "CR 250 bolt kit" it came with 4 of those inserts. i wondered what those were for.. hahaha h
@DanMX2112

Doesn't aluminium weaken if you heat it? Wouldn't you rather heat the steel bolt?>?>
@DanMX2112
@DanMX2112 Жыл бұрын
It don’t matter, the heat transfer wouldn’t change what part is heated.
@mikeweller8693
@mikeweller8693 5 ай бұрын
No. Whatever metal you heat expands. You definitely don’t want the bolt expanding, you want the aluminum to expand to take pressure off of the bolt so it would turn easier.
@DanMX2112
@DanMX2112 5 ай бұрын
Right, but In this scenario I can’t heat the swing arm without the heat transfer taking place. The benefit though is that aluminum expands more than the steel bolt at the same temp, which helps the cause. It would be nice if it was like installing bearings where I could only hear the aluminum.
