Broken Rusty Oldtimer Scooter - Restoration

In this video I'm going to restore a very rusty and broken scooter from the 1970s.
I've bought this scooter almost two years ago at an online auction for $40. I really liked the look of it, especially the design of the aluminium casted wheels. I knew this one would be a very challenging project because of multible reasons. I knew I need to replace the tires and handles, but I had no idea back then how to make them. It took a lot of research in terms of resin and rubber casting and also the help of my friend @misterpatina , which has organized the polyurethane rubber for me. It was pretty difficult to get the right hardness in the right color. There was also the rear fender missing, which required metal shaping to make a new one. I've never done that before, but after a successful test piece with aluminium I was optimistic to get it done and it worked out absolutely perfect. One more thing that scared me was the chrome plating of the handlebar. I knew I can't chrome plate myself, as I heard it's super toxic. Then the idea of nickel plating came to my mind, it has a slightly different color than chrome. It has kind of a yellowish goldish touch. After doing some test pieces, I knew this was the way to go. To get an overall uniform look and also rust protection I decided to polish and nickel plate all steel parts.
This project was the by far the most difficult one to restore. It required so many new techniques, that's why it took me 50 days in the workshop to complete. I really put my heart into this little scooter and in my opinion it turned out absolutely fantastic. The combination of the grey and blue paint together with all the shiny nickel plated parts and the new casted creme white tires and handles come together very nice. I'm very happy how it turned out.
I hope you like my work and the video.

@@arootube You can fix a lot of "worthless" tools with a few screwdrivers, an adjustable spanner, sand paper and lubricant. Once you can fix tools you can get for free/cheap you can start to make/fix more advanced tools. The word 'restoration' is just inadequate here. By removing casting marks, reinforcing weak spots, and putting on a better coat of paint, he's making these items BETTER than they were originally, while still keeping the aesthetic and feel of them the same. Hats off. This is astonishing workmanship, as well as beautifully filmed and edited.

There are two lines of though when it comes to restauration: "Be as faithful to a new original as possible" and "It was only new once!". The former tries to recreate exactly what it would have looked like from the factory. Some consider this a form of forgery, others swear by it. The latter tries to make it the best it can be while staying reasonably faithful to how the overall impression of the new item was. It's basically "make it how it was" vs "make it how I *remember* it".... Being a bit of a romantic who always remembers things better than they factually were, I'm squarely in the latter camp.... and so, it appears, is My Mechanics.

Fix any design flaws without scrapping the entire concept of the original. 3. Use the original components wherever it's reasonable to do so. 4. Plate or paint everything so it won't rust again. 5. Make everything removable so maintenance is easy. 6. Make every new component, including hardware and rubber parts, yourself. I dig this program and I am here for it.

I’ve watched many restorations on many other channels. You’re, by FAR, the most precise, most comprehensive and best craftsman there is. Other channels can not compete. Some have tried (including trying to copy your name) but do not come close to your technique and skill.

This channel is so far beyond typical restoration content, it seems like a difference in kind, rather than degree. There's just nothing close, and I don't say that to dump on other resotration channels. This guy's a freaking Michaelangelo of restoration. It's actually insane.

I love the re watchability of these videos, this is my second or third time watching this one. This restoration is the gift that keeps giving. when I think he's finished with all the parts, there's more. also, why do they call it an E clip? because it's shaped like an E. I think it looks more like Magneto's helmet.
