Genuinely felt really bad for John this episode. He’s seriously just trying to connect with all these people, but he slowly learns how _heavy_ their culture is, for better or worse. As a man who’s defined by his will to always fight for his life, seeing all these people who he’s come to care for so eager to throw their lives away must really weigh on him. And man he just tried to cook a nice dinner, at least give it a bite.

By law John would be allowed to demand Buntaro to commit seppuku for ruining the peace of the house of the host (also why Fuji cracks the shit at Mariko during this scene), keep in mind John is also Hatamoto which also puts him way above rank as well. Buntaro knows John isn’t aware, bows and doesn’t fight back knowing John would want a fair fight. But if everyone else found out, he could be sentenced to death for the disrespect.

yea, he clearly had no idea how to properly make whatever he was trying to make, you're not supposed to actually let that shit rot with maggots and flies and shit 🤣. I think he was trying to cure it, but to do that you need to pluck it, butcher it, salt it (if salt curing), or smoke it (if smoke curing) and hang it in a dry, well-ventilated area. He just hung that shit outside in a seaside town (humid environment), it's no wonder it went bad almost immediately

@@Dell-ol6hb Nope, it's called 'aging'. If you've ever had aged steak, they basically let it rot for a few days. It's a thing people do with a lot of meats, usually only for two or three days though and not a whole week (though with steaks they can do it for weeks or even months). The bacteria changes the flavor and texture of the food in the same way it does with cheeses that are aged the same way, or with alcohol that has been aged.

For the rotting bird. Back in the day they would let it rot and ferment for about a week. Then cut all the rotted portions off. The meat underneath apparently would be much more tasty. You gotta understand English food has never been... Tasty. Lol so this was one of the ways they could spice it up

It wasn't so much about taste as it was about texture, as Sheera tried to point out. Meat becomes much more tender as it spoils, making it easier to prepare and giving it a texture that was considered more pleasurable to eat. This is why spices from the East were considered incredibly valuable at the time. The Europeans didn't use it to only to enhance flavor, but also to hide the taste of rotten meat.

Aging meat is indeed used to tenderize and develop flavours. Freshly killed animals can be tough (rigour) especially game animals like the pheasant. Fancy steak restaurant still proudly advertise their high quality ‘aged’ meat.

The way I see that cannon regiment promotion for Yabushige's nephew is, I think Toranaga gave him that as to punish him for tricking Toranaga's son into "starting the war". Now Yabushige and his nephew will have targets on their backs because they are one of the most important people on the battlefield with so much power. Toranaga here is genius, he tricked the trickster.

Not only that but it also sways the nephew to his side, if he doesn't realize the back-handedness that is. From the start he's wanted more authority and recognition, and thinks Yabushige is his route to getting it thus he's always trying to impress him, but Toranaga is the one that's actually giving him authority and prestige and such.

Not sure what you mean. Japanese people definitely understand sarcasm and can very very passive aggressive, they just don't communicate it on a surface level. Frankly, I don't think anyone not raised in the culture can pick up those cues, regardless of language mastery.

This episode is even more fantastic uppon rewatch. To me it solidified what Mariko was saying, John thought a human life is leagues above some bird so why wouldn't they hold it in higher regard, and she said, no bro, an earthquake can come out of nowhere kill a lord and end a war. We're all are just as insignificant as everyone else we just try to do what we can,and if a man of the house says bird is god then bird is god, we need to have rules because nothing is by default. Also she said the gardner died "for the greater good" and how Johns word "gave him (the bird) meaning. And the when they blamed spy stuff on him another example how word gave a meaning for Uijiro to die for a greater good. This is fantastic.

@@M_k-zi3tn I have the advantage of having just watch both dune movies within the span of a week. I only saw dune 1 a week before I saw dune 2 which was a couple days ago. With that being said I’ve been able to follow just fine it has actually been pretty much exactly the same so far.

That thing he was doing with the bird was an old way of letting something age, apparently the rot would pass and then it would actually become quite tasty and good for stews! But it took a while, something they were not used to.

I actually did get an interesting bit on my youtube algorithm after some google searching the aging pheasant situation: (Semi-spoiler below): ... ... ... We all know the circumstances around aging steak and how it benefits the meat once it's prepared. What surprises me is how they are not receptive to this idea after Blackthorne embraced Natto which is basically a similar concept with beans. But digressing, the point is, I checked it and considering the climate over there and the type of meat, aging it a week is not such a crazy concept for the pheasant. It's a shame how things turned out, it would have been a real nice pheasant if Blackthorne was given a chance.

Yeah Blackthorne is deadass a pirate that is there to exploit the Japanese against the Portuguese in service of England and the Dutch Republic, like he's no more a good dude than anybody else in this story. Plus Toranaga never even actually promised anything to Blackthorne, he didn't respond to Blackthorne's negotiation at all because he is just a prisoner to them.

In french the word naming the bird is "Faisant" and the action of something rotting a little is : Faisan(der) the bird name is the origin cause you must let him rot a little to have a meat that is not too hard to eat and the taste become very different and tastefull ( not for everyone like all the hunt meat ) .

They're based on real people sure but they're wildly different from their real life counterparts beyond the broad strokes. For one IRL Blackthorne never even met the Mariko's real counterpart.

there's way more changes than just the names. The book fundamentally is a fictional story, albeit a historical one, you can't really look at it as a realistic depiction of the real world events it's based on.
