We were reminded this week that we owe an update on the 16 inch Continental Contact Urban tyre which was created by Continmetal specifically for use on the Brompton folding bike - thank you David
We installed a pair of Continental tyres AND inner tubes on the 05 April 2020 so just short of a year. (now it's March 2021)
Since then these Continental Tyres and the Brompton to which they have been fitted have done (according to Strava) 1,400 in or miles / kilometres 869 miles
This is less than would have been done if commuting were allowed!
This has included some long rides around London and the Home Counties - including riding over broken glass (that we didn’t see - just heard the crunch of glass)
The video shows how they look new compared with after almost a year and approaching 1000 miles
They are easy to fit
Weight compared to other Brompton tyres:
Tyre weights
==========
Conti weighs 275 g
Marathon weighs 420 g
Marathon plus weighs 480 g
Marathon racer 300 g
Folding Kojak 185 g
Wired Kojak 175 g
Tyre Pressure range
================
Conti - 65 - 116 psi (4.5 - 8 bar)
Marathon 65 psi - 110 psi (4.5 - 7.5 bar)
Marathon plus - 65 psi - 110 psi (4.5 - 7.5 bar)
Marathon racer - 65 psi - 110 psi (4.5 - 7.5 bar)
Schwalbe one tan wall - 65-110 (4.5 -100)
Folding kojak - 70 -115 psi
Wired kojak - 70 -115 psi (5 -8 bar)

Bought the Continental Urban Contact after your review last spring. Due to Covid-19 only 1500km on them so far. No puncture although really heavy glas load on the roads here. Very comfortable tires when used with medium pressure and decent grip on wet and sandy surfaces. Best all round tire for the brompton in my opinion. Many thanks go to you for introducing them last year 👍🏻🚴🏻‍♂️🌈😷🇬🇧

I‘ve ordered the Conti Contact Urban in June 2020, for the ridiculous price of 14.95 €. So far, they‘ve been perfect: No puncture and not much wear, and they don’t feel less grippy than the Schwalbe Marathon I used before. But even less kilometers than you had (only used the Brompton for grocery shopping since Covid started). By the way, ‚Schwalbe‘ is pronounced ‚shwullbeh‘ - like the ‚u’ in ‚skull’ and with a short ‚e‘ at the end. Hope this makes sense. 😉

Good vid. Hoping for a Conti to bring out some Gatorskins for the Brompton. Have long given up on Kojaks, and run Marathon racers on my S6L for years (5k miles pa without a puncture in city riding) and they're on my eM6L. I'm not expecting great things from the Ones on my Chpt3 when that starts seeing use when the weather dries/warms. Small point of order - tread and grip aren't necessarily the same thing; tread is primarily for water dispersion. Grip is largely a function of compound and contact area generating friction. In theory the Conti should be a bit grippier in the dry than the Marathons, but worse in the wet due to less water dispersion due to less tread, assuming equally sticky compound. In reality, the low centre of gravity and moment of inertia on a Brompton (plus the fact you're rarely riding it hard enough) should mean you'd never notice grip difference like you might on a 700c roadbike.

Switched from marathon plus in the rear -> continental urban yesterday; a great choice. The level of comfort and rolling resistance have significantly improved at identical pressures. Also swapped the inner tube AV4->SV4 as presta valve is preferable. The $80 spent has been a worthwhile move. (Should have done it sooner) thank you to the lady at Brilliant bikes for introducing the upgrade. Planning to make a change at the front end too (marathon -> conti).

BRILLIANT as usual and long overdue review, which I guess is a reflection of the times. I didn’t realise one of the consequences of Brexit would be that hills would become easier! Impressed with the apparent resilience of the Continentals and if the performance is comparable to the Schwalbe they’ve got to be worth a punt, perhaps with the tubalito inner tube, in the eternal pursuit of puncture-free riding... The tan walls though... still love those on looks alone. And ahh, Kodak memories: “Who loves ya baby?”! Thanks for another valuable addition to the knowledge pool 👍🌟 Stay Safe

Nice review. Just a small thing, but the conti doesn’t have less “grip” than the marathon plus. The grip is achieved from the rubber part of the tyre in contact with the road. In dry conditions a completely slick tyre will have more grip than a tyre with tread. What you are referring to is the amount of tread on the tyre, not grip. In wet conditions or a bit off road, a tyre with zero tread like the Kokak might be likely to slip as there is no water or dirt channelling. So some tread is needed. The Conti looks to have an ideal amount of tread, - giving plenty of smooth slick rubber for great grip and low rolling resistance in the dry and also enough tread pattern for wet conditions to channel water for road use. The scwalbe tyres have a bit too much tread for my liking for road conditions - compromising rolling resistance a bit in the dry, although they are good in the wet and off road.
@devjon123
@devjon123 3 жыл бұрын
I was recently on the Schwalbe website looking for information on a particular tyre. There was a "FAQ" about tread grip and other tyre related stuff. From the horse's ( Shwalbe's) mouth: What does the tire tread do? On a normal, smooth road, the tread has only limited influence on the riding properties. The grip generated by the tire on the road is almost exclusively the result of the rubber compound. Unlike a car, a bicycle will not aquaplane. The contact area is much smaller and the contact pressure is much higher. The floating effect of aquaplaning could only theoretically be achieved on a bicycle ridden at speeds over 200 km/h. Off road though, the tread is very important. In this situation the tread establishes an interlocking cog-like connection with the ground and enables the transmission of all driving, braking and steering forces. On rough or dirty roads, the tread can also contribute to better control. Why ride a slick tire? On a normal, smooth road, even in wet conditions, a slick tire actually provides better grip than a tire with a tread, because the contact area is larger. The situation is much different on a rough road and even worse on a dirt trail. In these cases the degree of control provided by a slick tire is extremely limited. Why are so many treads direction dependant? In the case of a road tire the rolling direction is mainly important for aesthetic considerations. Tires marked with arrows simply look more dynamic.. Off road, the rolling direction is far more important, as the tread ensures optimumconnection between the tire and the ground. The rear wheel transmits the driving force and the front wheel transmits the braking and steering forces. Driving and braking forces operate in different directions. That is why certain tires are fitted in opposite rotating directions when used as front and rear tires. There are also treads without a specified rotating direction.
@jacc88888
@jacc88888 11 ай бұрын
Interesting. I’ve only just learnt that lots of tread doesn’t necessarily mean more grip. Are the marathon plus tyres better in the wet or is there not much difference?

Do you use any tire sealant? Such as "Slime" brand etc? I was using Marathon Plus but I just learned that their rolling resistance is very high compared to the tire that you are reviewing here, so I would like to use a tire here that offers the 1/3 lower rolling resistance, and slime to stop getting punctures.

I always liked Continental tyres when I rode 70c - but never really compared tgem to anything. I'll definitely fit contis to the Brompton as soon as the original Marathons wear out. I really like it but I am having difficulty getting really comfortable with the seat. You have asked if we would like some more vids. Well a brompton E bike is not like a road bike & the usual saddle & post height & set up vids are not quite the same. So I would like some suggestions on the best way to set up my Brompton for comfort please. As it is, I have a job getting off it because the rear end is usually rather sore after 19 miles. Thanks for watching and paying such close attention They are crank brothers double shot pedals one side is a flat pedal with pins designed to take chunks out of your shins - after all "How to be a mountain biker" states that "there should be more scars on your shins than stars in the sky" - so perfect for wearing with 5:10 flat MTB shoes which also work for casual the other side use a crank brothers cleat - so you can be clipped in - and for cold weather these work well with boots to help keep those toes toasty! Regarding transporting - they are quite small pedals - it doesn't make too much difference (when flying though the left hand pedal has to be removed to fit the bike in a box)
