Gavin and I go through a very detailed oil change on our 2021 Badlands with the 2.7 ecoboost. We found several things that we think you should know.
Note: The proper oil filter canister torque specification is 18 ft-lbs and not 24 ****
**** This is a very detailed oil change, I am not recommending that you follow what we did. This process was only done so we could confirm why some people could not determine why they were only removing and refilling 6.2 to 6.5 Qts of oil. The 2.7 Bronco Holds 7 Quarts of oil****
***********************************************************************************************
I want to add that this is not your typical oil change. There are several things done that are not typical.
1- I removed the oil filter canister after draining the oil, this is typically done before draining the oil
2- In-running the engine before the oil change is to heat up the oil so it will flow freely, it is also to circulate the small debris and any solids so more of it will drain out with the oil versus settling in the pan and other spots
3- Oil samples should be taken from the stream and not a container,(even though it was clean)
4- 7 Quarts came out, 7 went in just as Ford calls for
5- I had to cut out footage due to time, the magnets didn't pick up any metal shavings (the shavings in the filter were aluminum) I did use the last half of the seventh quart.
6- The next oil change will be normal (I Promise)

Thank yo u for taking the time to make the video and including your son. A tip; I found using snap ring pliers a simpler way of installing the small O-ring on the oil filter canister (less chance of a pic damaging the O-ring and less manipulation). FYI, I have your same build and let mine set 4 hours; drained for 1 hour. 6 quarts out, but put seven in again, and above top hole on dipstick again. (Same as when it was shipped). So either the dip stick is wrong, (which I read in a ford group) or your oil catch pan was made in china and not accurate , and the missing 7th quart is still a mystery. I don’t know, but for me, 7 quarts are always going in unless ford updates it’s owners manual and/or with other misprints. Thank you again for taking the time to make this video; greatly appreciated.

Loved this video! Excellent way to simplify the process. By the way, just had my 1st oil change on my 2.7L 2DR Badlands (after 1,000 miles), I got 6.5Q in the pan. I popped open the oil cap and the oil stick while draining. So I decided to put back in what it lost = 6.5Q of Penzoil Platinum 5w-30. Thanks for all the tips! It surely helps!

I have over 30 years in industrial maintenance and have used oil analysis as a part of my overall condition based maintenance program and have had many successes in identifying various failure modes before an actual failure. This oil capacity question reminds me of the experience with a 1996 SVT Cobra: early engines shipped with the wrong dipstick, so there was all kinds of controversy about how much oil to put in a 4.6 DOHC Cobra. FWIW, my 2.7 F150 has always taken 6 quarts. My two week old Bronco 2.7 shows full on the dipstick on the factory oil fill. I’m going to start with 6 quarts when I change it, and then go by the dipstick. Btw, I found out the hard way on my 2015 F150: allow plenty of drain back time before checking oil. I overfilled mine by two quarts on the first change, before I realized what was going on!

Thanks for the video; I finally got a build date of March 6th 2023. I got a VIN for my 2.7 2DR BASESQUATECH so I think I'm safe. I will be picking her up in West Virginia and will be breaking her in on the way back to Florida (avoiding long durations at highway speeds by taking scenic routes when ever possible) . As soon as I get back, I'll be doing an oil change at somewhere close to 1,000 miles. I squeaked in under the wire as Ford was really encouraging reservationists to change their order to remove MIC hard top and sasquatch package (LUX is not an option for base neither is high or mid for that matter). All in I should be getting the Bronco for less than 40k. I identified the 2DR BaseSquatch as probably the best bang for the buck build.

Nice having your helper in the garage with you. I like using the Ronin Factory easy oil drain plug to replace the yellow plastic plug so that it doesn’t make a mess when draining the oil since I don’t have that big catch funnel you show. You never went back and re measured after you put the half quart in. Where did that put it on the hashes? So you did drain 7, but you also mentioned that on the dipstick it was above the top of the hashes. So was it over full with 7? Which is incorrect? The amount of oil it takes or the marks on the dipstick?
@DrivenWildOutdoors
@DrivenWildOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah the video was already 57 minutes long I did have to cut a couple things out and that was one of them. The engine ended up with 7 quarts. Based on the # mark 7 quarts of oil from the factory put it just over the top hole above the top # mark
@dc_advntr5525
@dc_advntr5525 2 жыл бұрын
@@DrivenWildOutdoors so if 7 qts put it above the top hole on the dip stick, wouldn’t that indicate over full? Looking at the manual page 321, spot A is the bottom hole and the minimum, spot B is the top of the hash marks and labeled nominal, and C is the top hole and labeled maximum. There is a note that says between A and C the oil level is acceptable and not to add oil. So it sounds like 7 might be a touch over full right?

Thanks for watching! I have seen them but I have never used them. It looks like a great option as long as they do not leak. I need to do more research on them. I talked to a mechanic at the dealership and he said that he takes care of a company fleet vehicles and they’ve been in there and not leaking for years.

I like the catch can idea, it is less important on a dual injection engine versus a direct injection, however in my opinion it’s a great addition. My brand new 2.7 Bronco was also above the hash marks. I believe the dipstick is a little inaccurate for a 7 quart fill up. Either that or Ford is overfilling every 2.7 and recommending about .5 quarts too much.

Yes, Ford does “over fill” new engines, especially the Eco Boost engines. My 2018 is always just above the top oil, tech said that’s the way Ford trained him to do so. My Wife’s 2021 Ranger with 2.3L Eco boost was filled the same. I asked tech and he said there is a lot of variation in engines 6.5 quarts plus or minus half a quart. Said seven will not hurt either engine. This man is correct on drain time. Read manual, says min drain time is 15 minutes but 30 is recommended, it’s in manual. And for “full synthetic oil” is dependent on use. Synthetic oil has many positives but a few flaws. Positive, oil is uniform throughout. Down side, if vehicles is used for short trips 5 miles or less synthetic oil can crystallize and destroy bearings. Read the Motor craft oil data sheets on synblend and full. Virtually no difference. Peace

Have you heard about a possible “bad batch” of early 2.7 bronco engines? I’ve seen 3 that have dropped valves. Curious to know your thoughts.
@DrivenWildOutdoors
@DrivenWildOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
Yes I have. I don’t think they are dropping valves. My idea is it is LSPI is causing detonation which in turn is destroying the cylinders including the valves and block. In ever case that I have heard about the drivers were at low rpm’s just driving. LSPI occurs in the 1300 to 2000 rpm range under high torque, example; 10th gear on the highway while accelerating or climbing a hill but not enough throttle to downshift to raise RPMs. This is one of the conditions needed to cause it, the other is a random oil droplet that flashes off and mixes with residual fuel vapor in the cylinder and causes an uncontrolled detonation which then the engine has its normal combustion cycle and this causes accelerated pressure in the cylinder which breaks the piston and then bits and pieces of the piston slap around and break everything else. Of course I could be totally wrong and this is my theory, it basically comes down to the right conditions and possibly a tuning and programming change coming if I am right. It is possible that it is bad/faulty valve retainers and keepers, however the driving conditions just before failure leads me to think LSPI. We will see I guess

If it makes any of you feel better about your 2.7, my 2015 F150 FX4 just turned 151,000 miles. Zero issues. Zero oil consumption. Still runs like new. I do Mobil 1 EP every 5000 miles, and I’ll be getting some snap ring pliers for that tiny oil filter o-ring, great tip. I love the little 2.7 so much that on March 27th I ordered up a 2dr Outer Banks Lux package 2.7 in Eruption Green. I just picked her up two weekends ago. Give these engines good oil, change it every 5K or so, and I see no reason why they won’t sail past 200,000 miles. I’m keeping the F150, it’s garage kept and still looks great, so I’ll find out just how long a well maintained 2.7 can live.

Just for clarification it looks like you added 6.5 quarts of oil. 1 qt then 5 qt. then 1/2 qt. ? You mentioned the oil was over the scratch line when you first checked it from Ford. Is that an overfill and possibly a problem ? I’m sure dealers won’t take the time as you did and not drain all the oil out then put 7 qts back in without checking. If this overfill does happen will it be a problem. ? Love your videos and have learned a lot. Cheers

short answer yes. It's always a good idea to start with less oil than capacity in order to NOT overfill. Overfilling will kill your engine. You can always add more but it's more difficult to remove excess. You do sleep, so I normally put in say 5 quarts in my f-150 (capacity is 6), take a reading, then when it shows in the hash marks, start it up and let it run for about 2 minutes, then turn it off then take a look at the dip stick the next morning. Add if oil if it's showing too low. ;-)

Motorcraft syn blend is really really good oil. It's made by Conoco Phillips and perfect for new Ford engine break-in and ring seals. After a couple of oil changes you can go to fill synthetic if you choose. I have 183k miles on my 4.6L mustang gt with no oil burning leaks or noise. I use Pennzoil platinum now. Good luck! Nice Bronco!

I would worry about getting non-OEM look - alike products, because they will almost always be made in China = less quality, sometimes, just a little smaller, cheaper plastic, etc.... Put some big cardboard under the vehicle to catch all those accident spills...

Was this you first oil change? If so, how do you know if their was 7 quarts filled in the engine to begin with. Maybe it had close to 8 after the dealer looked at the dip stick and assumed it was low. Your video proves nothing. You didn't even check, per the video where the oil fluid level was on the dipstick prior to draining it. So we don't even know if it was showing over filled, underfilled, or normal.
@DrivenWildOutdoors
@DrivenWildOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
Well if you notice in the video I used a 7 quart drain pan which filled it to the 7 quart level. More accurate than a dipstick

Ford engineers demand you take your vehicle to the dealer. They design everything difficult and time consuming. Farm equipment does not have dipsticks now. Ford is taking them away next. $12 for a oil plug? Insanity, does not matter anyway, you will not be able to buy gas in 3 months.
