Oh man, this video makes me cry. Jimmy had such courage. This song put a target on his back, & he still got up & sang about being gay. He made a difference in so many of our lives. Much love, Jimmy.

if there is one song that signifies what the 80's were about, it is this one. 1984 was the greatest year in the history of music collectively and this song to me was the best of that year. Additionally, coming out to the world at this time took massive balls. Such courage and integrity. Lastly, WTF is up with that crowd? I would have been screaming like a crazy teenage girl.

This song brings back so many memories. I was born in '73. I came out in '91 and danced to this at a dive bar in Boulder, CO called The Yard. At the time I had a constant sort of anger and melancholy about who and what I was, but was excited to meet people that were also gay for the first time and not feel like a freak. It is a perfect song.....and I am baked. LOL.

This song has always been in my heart.... Being gay is not all glitters and flowers.... There are people, who wish themselves, they were not born this way.... And there is a Society, that just want to crush you and make you disappear.... Having the strength and courage, to stand up strong for who you are, no matter what, is in any case the strongest example of a great human being.... With this song they really impressed me

@@Geekolaus Here the fact that he's gay counts, because he's talking on a topic which regards (also) him

@@doci6139 yes, of course, to understand the message and the impact of this song it is important to know that he's gay and that this had a huge impact on his point of view.
@camban3 жыл бұрын
Your comment is spot on. Yes the subject matter is important, yes his sexuality is relative and relevant to the lyrics. But we are also becoming far too focused on carving everything up for analysis and boxing everybody into categories. Some things - like a great beat, catchy melody and standout vocal - transcends everything else and can (and should) be enjoyed for what it is and not always what it means or represents. Ironically, if people stopped over analysing and incessantly differentiating themselves and each other, most of the issues that songs like this are about would simply disappear.

This may be one of the greatest live playing videos I have ever seen. In regards to the pain this guy felt well in school I was bullied for other reasons and never recovered. To this day I have extremely high anxiety and do not feel at all comfortable with people. I can't work due to this or even when I took a job like at a Subway that my ex-fiancee ran I could do prep work but could not come out and serve customers. The fear of being hurt is still there ....

The song is beautiful & powerful, but it's the courage that gets me every time. It's not like he was singing about a time past when homophobia could get you killed--that violent homophobia was the actual environment he lived & sang in. He was singing about being gay at a time when being gay could get you killed. It took such courage, & he will forever be an icon because he put himself on the line like this.
@johnnydtractive5 жыл бұрын
@NuggetOfBlueGold I'm not talking about HIV. You do get that there's actually a whole wikipedia article entititled "History of violence against LGBT people in the United Kingdom", right? Homophobic attacks, including murders & actual bombing of a gay pub in London (I remember that too) are part of the history of the UK--the UK ranks far behind Canada, for example, in addressing this. But I can tell you don't actually care about facts, you're just a frightened uninformed dude spouting homophobic opinions, looking for attention from gay men. There's a phrase to describe people like you. Good luck with that.
