I have heard that the use of chariots to transport warriors to the field who would then fight on foot was an iron age practice.

Amazing video! An interesting thing about Boar Tusk helmets is that boar tusks react in a way similar to ceramic when in contact with projectiles. The tusk would break but the projectiles of the time would probably be deflected.

I dont believe that the boar tusk helmet that was found was commonly used, think about how many boars you would have to kill for a single helmet though i imagine that non metal materials like bone, wood, leather, textiles and things like those boar tusks where used to reinforce bronze helmets to either add some harder material to deflect blows or add some padding to protect from blunt impacts. Helmets made from textiles where probably more common then bronze helmets, wich must have been expensive ... sadly those materials rott away and leave no trace most of the time

I think the boar tusk helmet was a sign of an elite warrior / king. It may go all the way back to the Sintashta culture. According to Robert Drews, the hunt of boars and the use of armor made of bone goes back to the steppe and Siberia. Very Indo European.

There are numerous cases of Mycenaean art depicting multiple Warriors wearing the style of helmet. I think this is where people get the idea that they were common. Maybe they were intended for Elites as opposed to the average Warrior? But anyway, it seems they were meant for more than just princes or Kings.

Boars can be very invasive animals, i’m sure they were in abundance during the Bronze Age, as they are even in modern times. Might not be as common, but I don’t think they were very scarce if there was a methodology of carving a common style of helmet for at least a fair amount of warriors or nobility

Interesting is also, that the swords became shorter over time, but broader. The early long swords were thin and better in thrusting between the plates of armor, while the later short swords were choppers. That can be explained with the reduction of body armor. Strange is also that, in the earliest time, with almost no body armor, they used more daggers than short swords.

No, not strange at all. They used "swords" as spears for close combat.

question: Did Mycenaean had chariots archers because their kinda effective. why didn’t the west develop horsemanship
@SleepingGiant77
@SleepingGiant77 10 ай бұрын
1) yes, Myceneans had chariot archers. 2) Horsemanship, and the chariot in particular, were Indo-European developments. I don't know how you define Western, but the Mycenaeans were Indo-European.
