Drummer Mark Schulman checks out the new Gretsch Brooklyn series drums for us at his recording studio in Venice, CA. Mark's resume includes drumming for such acts as Pink, Foreigner, Billy Idol, Cher, Stevie Nicks and Sheryl Crow. This is part one of a two part series.
Gretsch drums were born in Brooklyn, New York in 1883. They were proudly crafted in the vibrant city for the better part of the 20th Century. Brooklyn and Gretsch share an inseparable history that is part of American music history and folklore. It is a shared legacy that cannot be duplicated. Today, Brooklyn represents a renaissance community that vibrates with contemporary artistic expression, youthful innovation and passionate musical commitment. Gretsch Brooklyn series celebrates the rejuvenated Brooklyn city passion and spirit and expands on its distinctive shared American experience.
Proudly hand crafted in Ridgeland, South Carolina, USA, by a team of veteran drum builders, Gretsch Brooklyn has a sound that is at once recognizable and essential, yet distinctively reinvented. The Gretsch drum design team molded the Brooklyn series by combining classic Gretsch elements while infusing it with new attributes. They expanded upon traditional drum designs to shape a sound that retains fundamental Gretsch characteristics while projecting a fresh voice.

I don't get all the silly trolling with this guy. Mark is a solid drummer, and has played with some serious artists. Plus, he puts on a great drum clinic and will talk drums with you for hours. He is a drum-brother and need not be disrespected. Stop trolling on KZfaq and go practice.

Hi Martin - Thanks for checking out the video. As you can hear in this video, the Brooklyn series would be great for that application. The drums have a solid tone and are very strong so they can project in loud situations. Mark Schulman uses a Brooklyn kit on tour with Foreigner. Any series in the Gretsch line will perform for you. Renown, New Classic, Catalina Maple/Birch... They are all great choices for rock music.

I just bought a Brooklyn 5 piece in Tabasco satin and the 14x5 COB snare, paired up with my bosphorus plates and I'm ready to cut a record with my band and do some session work. Thank u gretsch for making the best drums! I own all of the lines (besides blackhawk) and these r my favorite! Cheers!

I just got a deal on a Brooklyn series and it's the best buy I've ever made! The base is the most insane thing I've ever heard. I've always been a Yamaha guy (which for the record are awesome as well) but these are incredible. As a drummer for 15 years, take my word, Gretsch should be your next drum investment.

JoeDotPHP I'm out of friggin space with 3 kits, the largest is 20 pcs, the 20th was a block given to me as a gift by Santana's late Raul Rikow (congas) and timbale player Karl Perrazo. I'm interested in more time with these and Slingerlands. There's not one, but TWO classic former drum factories within a short walk (Slingerland) and Ludwig on 1700 Damen, if I remember the address right. Both are condo buildings. I've shown the Damen building as a Realtor and I saw the other as an agent.

I agree, just bought a 4 pc, 18x24, 9x13 and 16x16,6. in Satin Tobasco, 5x14 chrome snare, couldn't be more happy with the sound and the quality- great stuff, and more affordable than the USA's. Big sound which we need in our band, really drives the music.

We are offering 3 configurations right now. There is a 22/10/12/16, 18/12/14 and a 24/13/16. They are all available with or without snare. You can order individual add-on drums and build a kit so to speak but it isn't a custom system like our USA custom drums. The USA Customs are ordered as single units to "build" your kit.

There is no doubt they sound warm, open and punchy and I think it's to do with the shell but also, and perhaps more importantly, the fact that the hoops are not die cast. I feel the shells just open up and breath a little more.

Why does everyone become so wild over drum specs? Drum companies? Drum shells? Does the sound of the drum come from the head or the drum itself? The shell doesn't produce the sound, it resonates the sound. People should be asking what kind of heads you have on that kit that make it sound so good!
@windsofmarchjourneyperrytr2823
@windsofmarchjourneyperrytr2823 7 жыл бұрын
fordsucks27 it's kinda both, I think. Heads are everything, but you need a solid and to me, a very alive kit with lots of sharp teeth. To me, that's Ludwig Vistalites. YES, a 26 kick is a bear to live with and harder to leash than a smaller kick. Overtones is your middle name. I usually use Moongels but I'd rather rip off a limb than play on those stupid damping pads. Thank God I have great neighbors who love my playing. You'll get satanic overtones out of undamped Vistalites, that go with next to nothing else in recorded music history but Led Zeppelin. Or Moon. Wood, is a big difference to plastic. Then the KIND of wood makes a difference. Any wood never forgets it used to be a tree, so that alone... Sticks make a bigger difference to me than to most. I like large, massive maple pipe band sticks. They're very light, but they have a lot of mass, should you need it. On a small kit, with small drums, they can be clumsy. V-drums, it doesn't matter. I can't imagine my kits with Evans. I can't STAND Evans heads. If I want to hear dead, I'll go to the cemetary. Pedals, we all know Speed King are what the old guys used. They feel like cr*p and they're slow as hell. Like pushing water uphill. DW is better, but now there's an English company that gives DW a run for the money. They make an extremely responsive hat pedal. Just my take. It'd be cheaper to get into horns, I don't think there's 8,500 different tones with horns. You don't switch 'em out between songs... My cymbals alone are thousands of dollars.

Ok, the drums sound absolutely amazing but there's this thing all the drum companies doing all the time, you know: "Hello Mr. Famous Drummer. Here you'll play a bit of our drums. Say you're fckin amazed by how good they sound, how fabulous they look and say you've been looking for this particular sound for all your life and i'll pay you good." and we drummers have to stand watching 2 very bad actors pulling off their roles with the hope of getting a tiny bit of useful information & sound.

I totally hear ya, but I think in some cases (like DW) the artists aren't paid to endorse a brand, they're just given the instruments for free and/or supplied with instruments when&where they need them, which IS a kind of payment, but if they're doing it just for the gear at least you know they actually want to play that particular gear. Even if they're paid for additional advertising-type stuff I still don't think it would be worth it for them if they don't actually like the gear.

Dan Klas Agree. I've taken inexpensive kits (Sakae Pac-D, saw the heads were the problem--not the kit itself, and wound up with a REALLY nice little kit that keeps up just fine with a Ludwig Bonham for...1/5th of the money. Just put coated Remos on, and you go...). You can mash 'em close to move fast, because they're small but they're powerful with a very nice tone. And the whole thing fits in a Taurus easy with lots of room for a full PA. I can't say that about the Ludwig. It's a bear to move, as is with 20 pieces.

He is a fabulous player but...ease up on the double kicks and the percussion barrage so I can hear the drums. ;) Great sounding kit! Every time I listen to USA Custom, Broadkaster and Brooklyns...I lean towards the Brooklyns. I can't pinpoint it but perhaps its because the toms don't get "lost" like Broadkasters (the vintage "thud" can get washed over live) and still retain a vintage sound. USA Custom doesnt sound as vintage to my ears...
