After I unboxed that DW Collectors Maple, everyone said I needed to check out a Sonor Drum set. Well a year later, I finally found a Sonor S Classix Birch that was worthy of checking out. Where I live you dont see too many people with Sonors and rarely do you see them come up for sale. As soon as I heard an S Classix Birch (Scandinavian birch to be exacpt) kit came into Sam Ash I went to check it out. Turns out there was a Sonor Jungle snare too! I still needed a "real" snare so I borrowed Bryce's 13x5.75 Benny Greb snare. These drums sound incredible, tuned up super easy, and recorded like a dream. Easily one of the best sounding kits I've come across! The S Classix line has kinda been forgotten about and replaced with newer lines from Sonor, but when it comes to this kit vs my DW Collectors, the Sonor takes the cake. No questions asked. Also this wasnt the most expensive drum set tbh. Of course I bought it used, but it was WAYYY LESS than that DW.
I FINALLY Bought a SONOR Drum Set!

Jungle snare gimmick .. one could find an application but not much IMO - reminds me of buskers . I'd rather have a secondary fully function snare like a Metal shell vs a Wood shell.

Fun story about pillows in used drum sets. I bought a DW Collectors Cherry a few months ago. inside the bass drum was a pillow. I took it out and I couldn't believe it. It was some super fancy brand pillow. Like it has the hexagonal stuff I think it's Tempurpedic or Purple. Its gotta be a $200 pillow. Anyways, it was super clean and so was the house I bought the kit from. So... its my pillow now. So comfortable and it even smelled like cherry for the first few nights.

I have a Sonor Sonic Plus II from the 90's and it's so well built and tunes like a dream. The hardware is a flimsy aluminium alloy and it doesn't have universal fittings which is frustrating, but for what is essentially a beginner/intermediate kit, it sounds incredible.

I bought my first Drum set in 1993, a Sonor Force 3000 maple birch, looks pretty much the same like the right top set in your picture collage at around 2:55min to 2:56min. And you know what: I still play it to this day and I freaking love it 😍😍😍 In 1993 I was 15 and had to save money for over 2 years to finally buy this Drum set, and I‘ll never ever in my entire life sell it. So thank you very much for finally buying a proper Drum set 😛 Best wishes from Germany 🇩🇪, Philipp 👋

I hear ya. The acquisition was so sudden and unexpected. And the announcement video isn’t even listed on their website - you had to find it on KZfaq yourself. They must have gotten into financial trouble due to the COVID lockdowns and were forced to sell, and are trying to pass it off as a “merger” with Roland to focus on DWe, when that’s probably not really the case.

I have a vintage 1960’s (1963 I think) Sonor kit that was my dad’s. It is still holding up great after years of him gigging with it, me dragging it to my friends garage to jam as a teen in the 80’s, and practicing every day for years while learning to play. Lots of drummers actually play Sonor- Steve Smith from Journey, Phil Rudd AC/DC, Nicko from Iron Maiden, Benny Greb, and many others. They do sound pretty good. Funny thing- my vintage set has tension rods that have a slot in them that has a unique drum key for them. You can use a flat screwdriver 🪛 to tune them in a pinch, but luckily I still have my dad’s vintage drum key. I only have one though which is a pain. The bass drum has handle pegs you can tune the bass drum without any key which is interesting, but a little bit of a pain because they can get knocked around. Overall I like the vintage kit. I play more modern DW or 70’s Ludwigs now though.

Unrelated to this video... You and a few others on KZfaq inspired me to build my own snare drums. I just completed my 4th since March. It's my most eccentric yet. It's a 13x7 red cedar with a shell measuring 1.25 thick. I'll post a vid on the finished product. Hopefully today I'll get a chance to play it on my kit. Thank you for you vids. Highly entertaining and inspiring.

Man! The snare is just so well tuned along with the rest of the kit (it feels like the center piece and that you tuned around it from my perspective). No rings and I love the part with the snare effects. No muffling at all and surprisingly with the heads you chose, there is absolutely no need to change anything. I listened to the raw version and my comments are identical. You shall NEVER put anything on them heads broooo haha Great for you man. You will certainly enjoy DW depending on what you are looking for! However Sonor has a precise personality in my opinion, while DW is more versatile. I.own a DW Classic and would not change it ever, and would totally do like you and get a Sonor if I had more space! Thanks for sharing, this kit is made for you man. You would like to try my other kit, an Ebenor, with a !7' by 14' BD and cool sizes, totally custom drums that were designed along with the owner and great artist Will. PM me if you are curious.

Sonor sets are (as you proved) designed a lot differently than other drumsets which make maintenance and care and tuning and set-up a lot more work overall. But my God, if you get over that hump and get everything the way you want it, they sound amazing. They're not for lazy drummers who just want a set that they can pick up and take from gig-to-gig with minimal care and still have it sound good. They're for drummers that want a great sound but are willing to deal with some of the design differences and extra care they require. Sonors are great for a studio set-up where they don't require constant moving and retuning and set-up. Also, that little snare is popping! I wonder what it would sound like with the snares turned off now. I'd love to have one of those for an added color sound in groves and solos.

Love the S-Classix, use it in every situation including my videos. There are not so many of these kits out there because it was just available for a relativ short time (I think to fill some gaps in the product line before getting out some new series). The price for these kits is somehow far too cheap: You could config that shells as an SQ2 for much much much more money (same factory)! Thanks for all your great videos and all the best! I remember on one of my first "gigs" an old head preaching about those dimensions and model of Sonor's. As he said it was sush a full sounding live kit that was actually pretty small/gigable. Iirc he wanted the 20" kick, 10" rack, and 14" floor. This was a few years before all the "mini" kits were so readily available. Btw: i use "Great Stuff" brand wipes in addition to windex or white vinegar in semi professional cleaning applications. The wipes are great for sticker residue in general(without having to break out the razor) and seems to be fine on wood/ other prefinished materials as far as not removing finish. Ive used them on some gunked up wrap finishes on some old Yammaha's and musc. Chrome/chromed drum hardware to great effect as well.

A drummer I played with had a 70s(?) era Sonor kit he'd purchased used in the late-80s for $4000. Never having heard of the brand at the time, I assumed he was nuts.. Then we mic'ed them... OMG. No weird overtones or resonance. Incredibly well defined "pat" on the BD with no "whoo" (so maybe not ideal for jazz). Everything was clean and well defined. Just perfection. We played a show where the other band's soundguy mic'ed us, and he immediately came over after soundcheck and asked what those were, because he'd never experienced such an easy setup. This may be untrue: A sales guy once told me that Sonor was purchased sometime in the 90s, and for a brief period maybe made some less expensive / subpar sets. If true, there may be a few used 90s models to not overpay for. Verify. Thanks for this video, because you've rekindled my desire to pick up a Sonor kit someday!

The year of the Sonors would be a perfect opportunity to feature some more Germanic musical stylings as well. By which of course I mean *The **_Scorpions_* and MSG.

My first kit was a 3 piece Sonor used in 1969. Since then, I have owned a black vistalite Ludwig 5 pc, early Collectors DW 5 pc. Ludwig stainless steel snares, Zildjian or Sabian cymbals. The DW's were sweet, but I would go back to Sonor in the blink of an eye if the finances permitted.

I love my Sonor kit. Been playing it for 25 years and it still sounds great. I've loaned it to so many drummers for their recording sessions because there's just "something" that comes across when it's in the studio. My DW kit is great too, and I like it for gigs, shallower shells, are easier to setup, etc. But if I'm looking to record, my Sonor kit is where it's at.

Phillips heads were specifically designed not to be over-torqued. They literally are designed to slip at a certain torque. So many places where they are specced incorrectly.

I got a Sonor Sonic Plus-set when I was 15 years old and started to play a lot live. I kept it for 30 years. During my active years, I tried out many other brands but never felt the need to change. My set came with very nice solutions for taking it down/putting it up in basically the exact same way. Very sturdy feeling, always. I never once needed to replace any fittings, it was built to survive an explosion I guess. Great sound, both live and in the studio. My kit really took a beating (pun intended), but it never failed me. Then I wanted to move far away and couldn´t keep the set, so I sold it. BUT. I just could not separate from the snare, so I still have it and ocassionally do some snare practice with it. The only strange thing about it was the tuning key. It is different from other kits, so I always had it with my other keys. I still have that too.

Love the videos man. You have all of these drumset but never seen you make a mega set, only really seen racks like once or twice. Dude it’d be awesome to start seeing bigger sets and racks and mega sets

Love the sound of the Sonor's better than the DW's! Interestingly you mentioned that drum company that requires you to return lugs. Years back I was given an OLD Camco drum that was used and abused by a high school percussion section. When the drum section took first place in an outdoor band competition, the drum instructors went in (me included) and bought them a NEW Pearl concert snare. The kids wanted to burn the drum, but I decided to take it, and restore it. After a few years the lugs started cracking, so I contacted the company that uses their lugs, and asked if I could purchase new lugs for the snare. I was told that I would need to send the old lugs prior to them sending, and was given a price which I paid. Less than a week later I received the new lugs, no information on returning, and exchanged. The drum is still my #1 snare, and sounds great!

They sound awesome! I always used the Superkick head until I discovered the Reflectors. I use a reflector on my kick and snare, and Remo Pins on my toms!
