The United States Army Special Forces, also known as the Green Berets because of their distinctive service headgear, are a special operations force of the United States Army tasked with six primary missions: unconventional warfare, foreign internal defense, special reconnaissance, direct action, hostage rescue, and counter-terrorism. The first two emphasize language, cultural, and training skills in working with foreign troops. Other duties include combat search and rescue (CSAR), security assistance, peacekeeping, humanitarian assistance, humanitarian demining, counter-proliferation, psychological operations, manhunts, and counter-drug operations; other components of the United States Special Operations Command or other U.S. government activities may also specialize in these secondary areas. Many of their operational techniques are classified, but some nonfiction works and doctrinal manuals are available.
The original and most important mission of the Special Forces had been "unconventional warfare", while other capabilities, such as direct action, were gradually added.
Their official motto is De oppresso liber (Latin: To Liberate the Oppressed), a reference to one of their primary missions, training and advising foreign indigenous forces.

I like the part about Jump School. It reminded me of my own experience in '73. Sounds like the narrator of this was Vic Morrow, the guy who starred in the " Combat " TV series.

Hi Dave, same here. I recognized some of the same equipment that was there in '74 when I went to Jump School as a Recon Marine out of Camp LeJeune (2nd Recon Battalion). I had just come from Combat Divers School, which was a real ball buster, got a couple weeks to recover and then orders for Benning. I had a blast at Jump School, the PT was very modest from Marine Recon standards and the chow halls were like five star restaurants compared to Marine Chow halls. The instructors and jump masters were real pros though and the 5 jumps were so much fun. I ended up back at LeJeune having gained 7 lbs. I was eating so much and running so little.

My dad was sf army in the 1960s one bad ass man. He never talks about army much just funny stories he tells about basic training and that he wemt to vietnam is all I know but growing up with a dad who was in a war like that is alittle different you dont walk in a room unannounced or touch him to wake him up if you know what's good for you.

Obviously this isnt my name but I was selected 1 month before my 50th birthday. Average time to complete training depends on mos, language, and recycles. Could be as little as 9 to 10 months. This doesnt include 3 weeks airborne at Benning and 3 weeks selection testing. Now you have sopc also. Other factors such as boot, ait. New guys are 18x go through pipe line can be longer. those bamboo stalks,,when sharpened by the enemy, ,they take the sticks, and soak the them,, tips down, in pails filled with their own feces, ,this is done to cause severe infection to solders that happen to fall into a pit, get cut or punctured, but not killed instantly,, instead,, the victim suffers a long and painful death from infection..

@TheCurlyGang Without comparing them, I must say the Green Berets are trained extensively how to take and defend cities while outnumbered, but are not frequently used to do that because that would not be resourceful. There is a surplus of soldiers in the US military that are also trained extensively to do that.

Yes, and no. The act of engaging in warfare has not changed; merely our ability to perform surveillance and remain situationally aware has changed with the integration of new technologies. But, we still cannot guarantee rugged, man-made traps and explosives are a thing of the past, and that old-school shoot and run gorilla tactics are barbaric and ineffective. The truth is that both of the aforementioned still cause significant and legit casualties, and to an extent, demonstrate that as of presently, the human element and investing in training can still pay dividends.

WHEN I WAS MARRIED IN 1966 I WAS IN THE 842nd QMC IN KANSAS CITY KS! THERE WAS A GREEN BERET UNIT IN THE SAME BUILDING! ONE NIGHT MY WIFE AND A NEIGHBOR LADY WATCHED THE BARRY SADLER GREEN BERET MOVIE AND SHE WENT GOO -GOO OVER THE BERETS! WHEN SHE FOUND OUT THERE WAS A BERET UNIT THERE SHE WANTED ME TO TRANSFER OVER! I TOLD HER I HATED THE ARMY AND BEING IN THE BERETS WAS A SURE TICKET TO GETTING ACTIVATED AND A SURE 1 WAY TICKET TO NAM, AND I REFUSED TRANSFER! A LITTLE LATER SHE WANTED ME TO START WEARING MY UNIFORM DRESS GREENS WHEN WE WENT TO DINNER OR MOVIES! OF COURSE THAT GOT A "HELL NO!!!" ALSO!!

you have nothing financed? you have absolutely no debts? do you not pay taxes? either way, the vast majority of the population owes banks and pay taxes, and the politicians speak on your behalf whether you care or not. one person who claims freedom from banks is not gonna change the fact of the matter.
