Marnie's Bio:
Canadian pianist Marnie Laird, praised as "…a technically immaculate, probing and authoritative protagonist" (The Miami Herald), enjoys an active career as a collaborative pianist, chamber musician, and soloist. Prior to founding Brooklyn Duo and Brooklyn Classical, Marnie spent three years as principal pianist of the New World Symphony in Miami under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas. In high demand as a pianist in New York City, she worked with several opera companies, including the Gotham Chamber Opera, and was also on staff as a collaborative pianist at The Juilliard School after graduating. Recent performances have taken her to Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and Merkin Hall, where her performance with cellist Matthew Zalkind for the Concert Artists Guild competition was broadcast live on WFMT radio.
Originally from Vancouver, BC, Marnie has been the recipient of numerous Canadian awards, including top prizes from the Canadian Music Competitions, Canadian Music Teachers' Association, and the BC Arts Council. Most notably she was awarded the Gold Medal for the highest mark in Canada on the A.R.C.T. piano performance exams. She made her solo orchestral debut at age 13 with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and has participated in the Tanglewood, Music Academy of the West, Kneisel Hall, and Banff summer festivals.
Marnie received her Master’s degree in collaborative piano from The Juilliard School, where she was the recipient of a full scholarship as well as the Orchestral Piano Fellowship. She also has a Master’s in solo piano performance from The University of British Columbia. Her principal teachers include Lorraine Ambrose, Robin Wood, Jane Coop, Jonathan Feldman, and Margo Garrett.

My first thought was the unsatisfactory tone of the piano. Ideally there should be a sense of untapped richness, of space. This one, though lovely, sounds limited, as though it's trapped in a space.

Beethoven was a genius who revolutionized music and brought it into a new era. He represents the crossroads between the classical and romantic musical eras. While the notes here are relatively simple to play the tempo is grueling and requires hours of practice to coordinate the finger movements with the rapid timing. This is a performance I would show as an example to musicians wanting to master this movement. Magnicficent!

Breathtaking. I remember being proud when my piano teacher said I nailed the balance between my left and right rands in the first movement, and that was after 10 years of lessons. The pedal work and dynamics in this performance are absolutely insane for a piece that’s so complex.

This piece was not meant to use much pedal, for the concept of pedal was still completely new during Beethoven’s era. Besides, too much pedal and this movement of the sonata easily becomes muddled and unclear. It’s not an opinion
@Fanchen
@Fanchen 2 жыл бұрын
I’d say there was a little too much rubato in some sections, and tempo variations. Beethoven is most of the time metronomic, with little stretches of time here and there for musical inflection. But it’s definitely not as flexible as Chopin. The tempo in this performance was great, but there were many tempi throughout.
