Hoka as a brand has really benefited from fashion starting to shift towards more big, chunky shoes. Doesn’t hurt that they’re super soft and bouncy
@RunMoore
@RunMoore Жыл бұрын
We agree that modern fashion trends have helped with Hoka's growth. We have carried Hoka since we opened back in 2014. The hardest group to sell them to were the younger teens. Their biggest complaints were about how big, clunky, and ugly they were. Nowadays there are plenty of high schoolers asking about Hoka solely for everyday use and fashion.

I'm sure if you worked for Hoka during those early years, which Steve is talking about, you might give Hoka a bit more credit for initiating some of those trends. "Different" takes a while to become trendy, then it becomes "not that different" any more.

I think you mean the midsole. The insole is a removable piece inside the shoe. Pretty much all the brands buy the same insole’s for their shoes. It’s the midsole that affects the feel of the shoe.

Im a Brooks guy. I want to like the Hokas so bad, but they're just not right for my feet and knees.The Glycerin (especially the 19 &20 versions) are pretty bouncy and nice (the 18 not at all!). I find the Hoka midsoles to be dead feeling. They feel like a stiff dead platform. They also are a bit more narrow, and have less toe box room in general for most models, even compared to the Brooks (D) width. The exception is the clifton and the bondi. The bondi has great softness and feels supple, but there's literally no return or bounce on it, making it feel dead in a different way. On the brooks side, i find the Ghost to be harder and not enough plush and bounce. Levitate feels nice and springy but not super plush. But I will say that the Aurora-BL is an absolute game changer. Anyone that has denied Brooks' plushness and bounciness needs to try that shoe. It is the ultimate in bounciness and feels so soft! I know they used the same foam in the Glycerin 20, but (although a great shoe) does not even come close to the return and bounce and cloud like pleasure from the Aurora-BL.

A review of Glycerine and Bondi by ~240lbs runner who has both. Glycerine feels soft and squishy on the heel. Not so much midfoot. Bondi feels firmer underfoot, but makes you roll through your step more naturally. More mass under midfoot than the glycerine. Glycerine reduces impact on knees with softer, plusher cushioning. Bondi reduces impact on knees by facilitating better mechanical motion of joints. Both have pros and cons depending on running style. Glycerine is definitely better quality and comfier for a short run. If you're heavy for a runner and doing more than a 5k, go for the Bondi 8, your knees will thank you.

Appreciate these valuable Moore perspectives. Hoka has inspired some NewBalance and Asics "big slab of sole" models which I enjoy. Unfortunately, the traditionally tightly-tapered toebox on the Hokas offends my flattened forefoot quite a bit. And the current Brooks models, as well. Still, when you combine a wide "bear paw" outsole, with a bit of Altra- like mercy in the toebox, modern diversity gives my feet something they can appreciate.

I like your take on the Launch vs Clifton. The Brooks Launch is a great running shoe. It is a quick, responsive, lightweight trainer with Brooks' DNA Flash midsole technology. The Clifton is also a great running shoe. However, it is better for walking when compared to the launch. It has a higher stack height and more cushion. The added stack makes it a bulkier shoe, which can be hard to run in for some people.

The Arahi is definitely more shoe when compared to the Adrenaline. The bulk gives it a softer cushion but also causes it to be less supportive. @RunMoore

We appreciate the support! Brooks only makes 4 trail shoes whereas Hoka has a more diverse lineup. The Brooks Divide 3's closest matchup would be the Torrent 3 from Hoka. They cost a little less, and are both lighter in both weight and cushion. The Torrent does match better to the Cascadia, but it is the closest shoe Hoka has to the Divide. With that being said, the Brooks Cascadia 16 would then parallel the Hoka Challenger ATR 7. They Challenger will be a little more cushioned and a little pricier. However, they both are designed for all terrain. The Caldera 6's counterpart would be the Speedgoat 5. They are the maximum cushion trail shoes with higher stack heights for longer runs. Finally, the Hoka equivalent to the Catamount 16 would be the Mafate Speed 4. They are both brands' "go fast" racing trail shoes. They are both highly responsive and made for faster runs.

Good morning, right now I am running in clifton 8 and I am seeing I am demaging the outside of the shoe very fast ( i have a high arch) i am running 60 miles per week. Can you recommend me any brook or cliftton shoe? Thank you
@RunMoore
@RunMoore Жыл бұрын
We recommend something with a little more lateral support, such as the Hoka Arahi 6 or the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 22. Both of these shoes have support on the outside to help keep you from turning toward the outside when you run. This won't just help the wear pattern, but it will also help with any ankle, knee, or hip issues you might be having.

Great video! My question is: what would be the HOKA equivalent of the Brooks Glycerin GTS 20, if there is any?

As Dan said, the Hoka equivalent of the Glycerin GTS 20 is the Gaviota 4. It is the stable version of the Bondi. The same as how the Glycerin GTS 20 is the stable Glycerin 20.

This was a great video. I did have a question; I’m trying to buy my brother a shoe He on his feet all day, He 6ft5 and size 14 Any recommendations that specific that benefit him?
@RunMoore
@RunMoore 8 ай бұрын
Our recommendations would be anything that is in the maximum cushion stability category. People on their feet all day usually want the most cushion available. From Hoka, there is the Gaviota 5, and from Brooks, there is the Beast GTS 23. Both of these shoes are great options for someone who is on his feet all day and needs the cushion and support.

What is alternative to Hoka Mach X in Brooks? Honesty still not sure if Hoka shoes for me. Last year running shoe store recommended Hoka Clifton 9, and I even ran a marathon in them. This year felt that after long runs my legs became more tired after wearing Clifton, I sold them on ebay. Just bought Mach X last week, but running in them feels so tight. Not sure if they should break in.

My favorite Brooks shoe I ran in last year was the Hyperion Max. If you were looking to get the fast pace of the Mach X but wanted to stay in the Brooks family, give that one a try. It's got enough cushion for longer miles but so comfortable and speedy.

What about a brooks comparison to hoka challenger 7?
@RunMoore
@RunMoore Жыл бұрын
Brooks doesn't have as many trail shoes as Hoka or Altra. The closest shoe Brooks has to the Challenger would be the Cascadia 16. The Cascadia is a little lighter on the cushion when compared to the Challenger. It is more comparable to the Torrent from Hoka, both being lightweight cushioned trail shoes. With Brooks' more limited trail line, they just don't have a one-to-one equivalent to the Challenger.

"Run More" I am in desperate need of help! I have worn Brooks Ghost until the version 14 and 15 which I can't wear. My back and Thighs just can't adjust to them at all. All the versions Of Brooks Ghost up to version 13 were wonderful. I don't know what to do or where to go, I wear an orthotic and they fit well in the Brooks, do you have any ideas of what shoe I can move to, I am desperate to be able to walk/run without pain.

I used the Ghost 9 and 14 (stopped running for over a decade that's why my Ghost 9 are still as good as new) - but ultimately switched to Brooks Divide 4, Ghost Max (almost too much stack), Adidas Ultraboost 22 and just bought a Puma Liberate Nitro 2 but haven't tried it yet. The Brooks Divide 4 has the largest toe box of the Brooks I own and 8 mm drop. It's a bit firmer but has better ground control IMHO than the Ghost, especially the Ghost Max which feels nice but is insanely high so rolling your ankles is a real danger. I almost manged to do it on my first run with them. So I prefer lower stack especially since I run some light trails or forest paths (but not completely off any paths or trails). Ghost Max is more of a road shoe. Divide 4 works great on both for me.

What Brooks would you recommend for someone that works 8 to 9 hours a day on concrete in retail looking for a good support like walking/you know running shoe when I go back and forth back and forth and also being 6'5 over 200 pounds was using the transmit threes by brooks just like as a cheap workshoot and they 2rer great but now I have the adrenaline Gts do you think those would be good for that

For the stability folks, another pairing I’ve worn: Brooks Beast & Hoka Gaviota
@RunMoore
@RunMoore Жыл бұрын
We agree that the Beast '20 and the Gaviota 4 pair nicely. The Gaviota also pairs well with the Glycerin GTS 20. The Beast is one of Brooks' max stability shoes, whereas the Glycerin GTS is Brooks' maximum cushion shoe with stability. The Gaviota is a combination of the two shoes from Brooks. It is maximum stability like the Beast and has the most cushion like the Glycerin GTS.

I tried the Brooks Adrenaline 22 and for some reason it hurt my knees vs Hoka Clifton which is what i usually wear. Wanted to try Brooks off your recommendation. IS the 12mm heel drop going to cause problems? I have had them a few weeks and find myself going back to the Hoka. Should i give it more time?

@Steven Vanlancker i heard brooks is coming out with a 5mm heel dop version of the adrenaline will. i feel the heel drop is to high for me coming from a zero drop or 5mm running shoe.

I am a nurse and walking/standing a lot at work and bought bondi 8 but to bulky looking for me, what do you suggest?
@RunMoore
@RunMoore 10 ай бұрын
If you are interested in something similar to a Hoka without being too bulky, a couple options to check out are the Brooks Glycerin GTS 20, the New Balance 1080v13, and the Mizuno Wave Sky 7. If you would like to stick with Hoka, then the Clifton 9 or Arahi 6 would be good options. The first three shoes are all maximum cushion shoes like the Bondi, just a little more streamlined. The Clifton and Arahi are midweight cushion shoes, the Clifton being neutral and the Arahi being stable.

Thank you for this informative upload. Now into my 10th pair of Hoka Clifton/Bondi shoes, I am disappointed with the quality of the heel linings. After only 200 to 300 kilometres, holes are developing in the inner heel linings. I have a neutral gait, no foot deformities and I am lacing my shoes with care. Hoka are not responding to my queries. Would the Brooks Glycerin be more enduring in this regard and in your experience? and would a US size 11 in Hoka's be the equivalent size in Brooks? I have to order online, rather than accessing a shoe shop.
@RunMoore
@RunMoore Жыл бұрын
It's hard to say without seeing the shoes in person. Usually, when people have a hole near the heel, it's caused by the heel slipping. We suggest trying out the "runners/marathon" loop in your lacing. It helps lock down the heel. Otherwise, the Glycerin does run narrower towards the heel. It will help with durability and keep your heel more secure. We suggest staying with a size 11 if you are in a size 11 Bondi.

@@RunMoore Thank you so much for your instant reply. I have been experimenting with different lacing techniques, but also don't feel my heels slipping. I am now done with Hoka, first due to the lack of durability (inside and out) but also with them not bothered to respond. Thanks again and back to Brooks for future supplies.

Which shoes are good for pronation?
@MrSeedi76
@MrSeedi76 3 ай бұрын
Not a Hoka. I tried a lot of them in stores and almost all of them have soles that are too stiff. I land on the outer edge of my forefoot and then the stiff sole just slams inward. It feels like running in ski boots. I want to like them but never found a model that worked for me, maybe with the exception of the Hoka Rincon 3 which feels a bit more "minimalist" if one can even use that word for a Hoka. I'm still looking and I'd still like to try a few models like the Mach X but no store here carries them.

So, I do have a question. I wear a Clifton 8. It gives me a little discomfort on top of my foot. I cut the outside gusset and it’s a little bit better. My feet are may be a little bit tall. If that’s a thing. What cushion shoe might I find that won’t do this?

What about the Glycerine GTS variant? I’ve been curious since it has the guide rails from the Adrenaline. I need both cushion and support.
@RunMoore
@RunMoore Жыл бұрын
The Glycerin GTS would have the same cushioning as the Glycerin, with the added support and stability from the guide rail system. If you are looking for something from Brooks that has a lot of cushioning, support, and stability, the Glycerin GTS is a great option!

The durability of Hoka models can vary depending on the individual, the shoe model, and its use. However, we have seen an overall improvement in durability across Hoka models in recent years. This gives us confidence that future models will continue to improve their durability even further.
