LYRICS
I don't wanna work my day job
But I got bills I gotta pay off
It may not be good manners
But I don't wanna be staring at a screen
Pretending that it matters
At my day job
But my retirement is still a way off
I'm afraid of what it's made me
I'm stressed out
Somebody tell me how I'm supposed to get out
(Sigh)
This white collar is a little too tight
I'm struggling to breathe
And all I see is squares of white blue light
I might not make it in tomorrow
Sorry for the fake deadlines that I broke
Hey!
Middle manager
I sold you my best years and my posture
To be one more body making your wheel spin
So 9 to 5 I'm only thinking one thing
I don't wanna work my day job
But I got bills I gotta pay off
It may not be good manners
But I don't wanna be staring at a screen
Pretending that it matters
At my day job
But my retirement is still a way off
I'm afraid of what it's made me
I'm stressed out
Somebody tell me how I'm supposed to get out
I should feel lucky that I got one
Unemployment is a real problem
I should save for something I dunno yet
Real estate never got me going
I should climb a ladder that I wanna be on
And stop complaining that I'm just a corporate peon
To be honest, it's someone else's dream
But it ain't me
And that's alright
Yeah it's okay
But is it too much to ask
To not feel like I'm wasting away
Whenever I am working at my day job
But I got bills I gotta pay off
It may not be good manners
But I don't wanna be staring at a screen
Pretending that it matters
At my day job
But my retirement is still a way off
I'm afraid of what it's made me
I'm stressed out
Somebody tell me how I'm supposed to get out
I don't wanna work my (I don't wanna work my)
I don't wanna work my (I don't wanna work my)
I don't wanna work my (I don't wanna work my)
I don't wanna work my day job (day job, day job, day job)
I don't wanna work my (I don't wanna work my)
I don't wanna work my (I don't wanna work my)
I don't wanna work my (I don't wanna work my)
I don't wanna work my day job (day job, day job)
Fifty years from now what would I spend
To live today again
Fifty years from now will my savings account
Be worth what I'm missing now
Working at my day job
Fifty years from now
What would I spend (I don't wanna work my)
To live today again (I don't wanna work my)
Fifty years from now
Will my savings account (I don't wanna work my day job)
Be worth what I'm missing now working at my day job
But I got bills I gotta pay off (I don't wanna work my)
It may not be good manners (I don't wanna work my)
But I don't wanna be (I don't wanna work my day job)
Staring at a screen
Pretending that it matters (I don't wanna work my)
At my day job
But my retirement is still a way off (I don't wanna work my)
I'm afraid of what it's made me (I don't wanna work my)
I'm stressed out
Somebody tell me how I'm supposed to get out

I think you misread the end. He wasn’t missing the people he despised, he wasted his life at that job and those people were all gone on to better, or at least different things. While he just turned into a dinosaur doing the same pointless thing his whole life because he was to scared to change. Now he is old and the security of that sh!tty job very clearly wasn’t worth never taking that leap, taking that chance on himself and changing his life.

As someone who works that 9 to 5, dealing with immense burn out, that last verse brought me to tears because... I really don't want to waste all these years hoping for a retirement that may never come. I want to live now without being chained to a job just to keep a roof over my head.

Sadly, the only way to make things a little easier is by playing along with the game of capitalism. Creating your own business, or buying into real estate and becoming a landlord. Both of which would require a sufficient amount of funds, so either way, we lose part of our lives to our corporate overlords.

@@realteimopielinen Yes this! I was high af when I wrote that comment and didn't even think to mention it. Every workplace should be unionized, only then, can we actually fight back. For a lot of people though, the thought of working for most of our lives, even if it is unionized and pays well, is still terrifying. I don't know if the stuff I want is even worth the price it cost (my time, my life).

Find a job you like, regardless of the pay. If you like working with your hands, there's a shortage of plumbers, electricians, carpenters - and the pay is quite decent. Or if it's not the type of work, but the goals, there are tons of non-profits with noble goals that have trouble finding good people, because they can't pay as well as others.

I'm about to enter high school, and I have to plan my entire next four years and how it affects the next four or more years for college, and then how that affects the rest of my life. as someone who's had really great teachers for high school, here's some reassurance that high school isn't everything. so many people don't figure out their jobs well into their college years, and it may take years! one of my parents found a job they're really good at and they enjoy at around age 40, a teacher i've had did terribly in high school but attended community college for 2 years to get their gpa up, and and a sibling of mine attending college has a classmate in their thirties. high school will be stressful, but life won't be over if you're not ready.

@@sincerecinnamon As a person graduating HS this year, if you've got a solid plan(reasonable for your abilities but still trying to do the best possible) you'll do great. My main advice is to plan out the classes you want to take for the next 4 years because prerequisite classes are a pain. Leave some flexibility in your schedule though incase things don't go perfectly. Also, depending on if you think you can handle it, I highly recommend taking dual enrollment courses from a nearby community college. Being able to try out classes from different majors helped me so much when choosing what I want to do in college. Good luck!

@@johnroch.a The new job is AWESOME! The coworkers are nice, the manager gives me extra pay when I do extra work, and when the job's done I can just leave! Today I was still being paid despite being home for an hour already because I finished up early, haha! I just gather my supplies, put in earbuds, put on some good music, and get 'r done! Thanks for asking! :D Edit because I worded it a bit badly: The work times are calculated beforehand, 20 minutes for leaving guest rooms and 10 minutes for people staying. So if I'm done early, I still get paid for the calculated time. And when rooms are exceptionally messy and it takes me longer, I get a small bonus.

I left a longer comment on one of the shorts for this song but I want to add one here too. It’s really reassuring to hear someone else saying all the things I’m thinking and feeling. I’ve been told by my boss I have a lot of potential and could go really far, which felt nice, but then immediately didn’t because I don’t want to keep working this job. I don’t want to climb the ladder, that’s not interesting to me. I feel like my life is flashing before my eyes and it’s not going anywhere. And then behind all that there’s the guilt you mentioned feeling too, of living someone else’s dream. All these great things that people work so hard for that… I’m not feeling as great. I’m working on finding a job in another place that feels more meaningful to me, so hopefully that works out. In the mean time though this was a really reassuring song for me. Just knowing that I’m not alone and really it’s ok to not be happy for all these things I’ve been given that I don’t really want

Tbh the job im currently working at, im excited to get more hours and learn new things. I am working a hob that requires a particular skill set and ive found that ive enjoyd the challenge that this year has presented me. Im looking forward to learning all that i can from my current boss who is actively advocating for me and while i am taking a slight pay cut where i am at i am also enjoying the environment im working in significantly more than others ive worked in in the same field that has burnt me out in a much smaller time frame.

Exactly the reason I left my job in the IT sector for becoming a social worker. Less money, but more impact. Life is too short to accept a mediocre one 🤟
