Unpopular opinion: I personally think that brother bear did the concept of sibling love BETTER than Frozen imo

When Koda is telling the story of what happened to his mom and we see Kenai flashing back to it, he can now understand what the mom was saying. She was calling for Koda 😢

As a kid I didn't really think about how messed up Denahi must have been after losing BOTH his brothers in like less than a day, no wonder he was being so angry. There's a lot of beautiful scenes in this movie and I always tear up when Keni tell Koda what he did

It's interesting that because people didn't appreciate this movie at the time, traditional animation just continued to die. It is *very* underrated.

Joaquin Phoenix, who voiced Kenai, lost his brother River in real life. According to the director, when they were recording Kenai's reaction to Sitka's death, Phoenix's performance was so raw and intense that much of it had to be cut for fear that it would upset kids too much.

One thing I love is at the beginning of the movie when The bear is getting hunted it has black beady eyes, making it seem as if it is a mindless beast. At then end when Koda is saying goodbye to his mum's spirit, her eyes are real, giving soo much more emotion to the mother bear. It shows how much has been learnt in this journey, how every creature has a soul and ability to love and is not just a monster.

I've said this once in another video but I'll say it again. Sitka's death is underrated as one of the saddest Disney deaths.

"As long as you do it well, it doesn't matter if the story's been done a million times" ^I feel a lot of people can take that lesson to heart, because it's true - I've felt that way since as far back as I can remember, and I've seen a bunch of cliches that were used well, used badly, and in-between. Literally everything can be used well, bad, or in-between, but it's that individual quality that matters at the end of the day, not whether they're using something that you like/dislike/whatever.

In case no one has pointed it out Denahi plays two roles for Kenai. To be the hunter towards him so he could feel what it was like to be on the other side of the spear, but to also serve as a mirror for what rage and obsession could've turned Kenai into. Didn't figure the second part out until I was an adult and the thought randomly hit me and the way it's all done without needing to be said is simply too perfect for words.

I lost it when Kenai was telling Koda the story and says, “Koda, I’ve done something very wrong. Your mother’s not coming…” 🥺🥺😭

This was one of my favorite movies as a child. I didn’t watch any of the Disney princess movies and so animal movies were basically what I had. Its a wonderful story.

I honestly didn't know this movie was underrated and I was very shocked when you said you never heard anything about it because in my country this movie is VERY famous! it's one of my favorites, I cry every single time

The one thing I love about this movie is the animation and color especially during the scenes involving the spirits

One of my all time favourites, I’m Yolngu and Indigenous to Australia. One thing that is similar is the totemic system that incorporates animals. In our system, when you have a totem (like Kenai being a bear) you are not supposed to hunt, kill or eat your totem as it is an extension of you. Even as a young kid watching this is resonated with me and I knew that him killing the bear (who we find out later in Koda’s mama) was going to change his life lol. He had lessons to learn and he could only do that by becoming his totem. Still a fav :)

Really sucks that critics hated this movie, stating that they never understood the concept of the story.

The part where he says "the story of a boy who became a man... by becoming a bear" then Kenai putting his paw on the wall while listening the phrase "brothers all the same" always gets me .

Great reaction guys! If you're curious, the original scene where Kenai confesses to killing Koda's mother is available on KZfaq, sans Phil Collins drowning it out. It's...pretty dark for Disney (hence why they cut it, despite it being the most important scene in the whole damn movie) but I honestly do prefer it over the nicer, safer final cut that we got.

29:50 "There was no 3D used in Mulan really..." Actually they did use CGI for the Hun Army. The first was when we first see the main villain (Can't spell his name) and his Army in the rocky landscape. the 2nd is when the Hun army charges down the mountain towards Mulan and the rest of the troops. I think they also used CGI in the Ballroom scene among few others in Beauty and the Beast. I can't exactly remember. I'll ask my Dad next time I see him. Separate note. My Dad is Aaron Blaise who Directed Brother Bear. I love seeing people react to the movie. Shows that it's still being seen :) and the Transformation scene in film still makes me choke up a bit from the beauty of the colors and music of the scene. I recommend if you haven't seen them yet either Hunchback of Notre Dam or Lilo and Stitch which my Uncle Animated Stitch in that movie and it came out a year before brother Bear. Another Note: The Moose Antlers were CGI as well. to maintain the shape of the Antlers, they used tracking and animation for the Antlers seperately. Similar to that of John Silvers hand in Treasure Planet.

You guys were wondering what era they lived in the movie, and considering that the bears rode over Mammuts, it must have been the ice age. The world lived through many glaciations, that would explain the baggy clothes and the cave paintings (used for thousands of years as a form of communication and to leave a legacy to other generations of the tribe). You should react to the animated Tarzan, that one is amazing too :)

Brush you clearly instigated Sitka's death too early. As a kid it was a big twist which played as a big factor in the movie. When I used to recommend it to you guys, I knew you'll like the landscapes and art style cause most of it is done in 2d and it's actually done really neatly. The bear being Koda's mom was one of the biggest plot twist I've ever seen as a child besides Darth Vader being Luke's father in Empire Strikes Back. The whole mountain scene is still incredible. Be it animation, lightning or the different animals that represent their ancestors and different meanings like how Kenai saw those fishes and wolves both each represent his happy times with his brothers to his revenge and lonely journey. The problem was not that he killed a bear. Any hunter can kill a animal, only if it's out of need and hunger. He killed the bear in spite and vengeance against his totem. His vision got more wider and bright as a bear, as the old lady said; he'll see things in new perspective. In the process he realized both sides thinks monstrously of each only because they chose violence as first instinct. Being a bear and staying with Koda as his guardian was his punishment and his redemption. Denahi was the one who really went through too much arc. He never blamed the bear, only thing of it as a individual who was trying to survive and Sitka just lose his life in accident. It was until his other brother died by the same bear did his perspectives changes and agony took turn on him. Brother Bear, Treasure Planet, Atlantis, Sinbad, Lilo and Stitch are those movies where not only you appreciate the art but also storytelling. I'll highly recommend Legend of the guardians: owls of Ga'Hoole, The Adventures of TinTin, Meet the Robinsons, Arthur's Christmas.

I’m not sure if you guys noticed this but when Kenai wakes up as a bear for the first time the movie screen expands compared to the beginning of the movie. So seeing everything as a bear is different than as a human, showing that as a bear and Kenai going through this change he “sees more around him” it is really cool! And a different perspective!!

Here’s some fun facts about Brother Bear, though some of you already them. -Koda is played by Jeremy Suarez aka Jordan from The Bernie Mac Show. -D.B Sweeney, the actor who plays Sitka, previously played in Disney’s Dinosaur as Aladar. -Denahi is played by Jason Raize, who is well known for being part of the original Broadway cast of The Lion King, where he played as Simba. -In the early stages of production, it was under two different titles; Shadow Bear and Bears. -Kenai was originally gonna have an older brother figure named Griz. But replaced with Koda cause the execs figured it’s best that Kenai have a younger brother figure.

My 2D effects animation professor worked on this film. He had worked on the ancestrial lights sequence. He recently passed away (this past October, I believe) and rewatching this movie with y'all and seeing how much you appriciated the animation really made me happy.

yeh kenai is voiced by joaquin pheonix he's so good in the role, as well as the kid who plays koda who really brings the character to life capturing the spirit of how young kids truly are. This is my favorite disney movie of all time (2nd fav is lilo & stitch). it's such a great story and pays respect to the culture it depicts. Not only a tale of empathy, insecurity, perspective, and grief, but coming of age, knowing your responsibilities, taking accountability, etc. Plus a great message of everything in nature being connected and alive, and all life deserving respect and compassion. A reverence for nature. There's a doc on youtube i think for the behind the scenes where they talk about the animation, story creation, voice acting, composition of the music, etc. It's super intriguing especially how the people involved in the project went to these different landscapes in real life to truly capture the beauty of the world when they'd eventually animate it all. Also they explain that when Kenai is human in the beginning the aspect ratio is smaller (4:3 i think) but then widens when he becomes a bear to represent his initial narrow-mindedness and subsequent change in perspective as a bear.

If you watched til the end you can see the rams still yelling at the mountain. 😂

Here's something you'll love: In the Brother Bear dvd, you have the option of watching the movie WITH Rut and Tuke. They sit in a movie theater and they talk throughout the whole movie. They even order a pizza at one point🤣🤣 I loved that option sometimes when I wanted to watch.

Just to let you know, it wouldn't be unusual for a bear to simply run away from you. They're not monsters, they're just animals. And like any animal, they'll fight if they think they need to, but usually, they'd rather just run away if they can. It also depends on the personality of the bear and the situation. During Kenai's first confrontation with her, he not only instigated the fight by cornering her and throwing things at her, but she was also protecting her baby. During the second confrontation, they were in a berry field, with plenty of ways to run away, they were both startled by each other, so Kenai wasn't actively after her, and she didn't have Koda with her. It makes sense that she just ran away the second go around.

Love that you are talking a lot about the animation style. Really interesting! Most other reactors only talk about the story points, so this is a nice change.

fun fact: this movie actually takes place in the ice age, hence the mammoths. the bears in this movies are cave bears, which is why they're so big, and have that little strip on They're chests

Brother Bear is a wonderful movie and never fails to make me tear up a bit. i'm glad you guys enjoyed it! and the animation and painted backgrounds really are beautiful. the only other movie i can think of that rivals it is Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, which i've recommended before i think, but i'll recommend it again because why not. it's a 2002 movie, but i think they did a phenomenal job with the 2d and 3d hybrid animation blend. and if you like how they did the songs with Brother Bear, i think you'll also like how they did the music for Spirit. it has one of the best scores/soundtracks imo, but it's Hans Zimmer so no surprise there haha.

Rutt and Tuke (the moose) have always been my favorites, too. They are voiced by Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas. These two used to do short live-action sketches called "The Great White North" in the 80s. The moose characters are kind of poking fun at their own voice actors, because if you watch any of those sketches, the characters that Moranis and Thomas play, sound exactly like Rutt and Tuke, and these sketches are just as funny, too. You can find "The Great White North" skits on KZfaq. I highly recommend checking them out, even if you just watch them on your own. Great reaction as always, guys. Looking forward to the next one!

One of the most underrated films ever. I love it so much! Its topic is the relationship between siblings before Elsa and Anna even existed as the big famous Disney siblings. And then there's the music by Phil Collins and those breathtaking landscape drawings ... perfection in one movie!!

there’s a deleted version - you can find it on youtube - of the scene where kenai tells koda he killed his mum, but without the phil collins music over it. i guess they changed it in the end because it was too dark and they had to soften the blow a little bit. it’s still super interesting to watch though, and the rough animation is so neat

Brother Bear is one my favourite animated movies it's just so good !! It's visually beautiful and I really love the story, the characters, the message, the animation, the songs I mean I can't list everything but I think everything perfect xD I honestly don't know why it's so underrated and why so many people haven't seen it !

You guys should really react to the Disney movie Dinosaur. It was made in the year 2000 and is another underrated animated Disney movie.

I hope that Brother Bear focused more on the Natives than the bear aspect, that's one of the vices I had with The Princess and the Frog, I wished it focused more on Tiana than the frog aspect.

My music teacher (im Bulgarian and the "transformation" song is sung by the Bulgarian women's choir) was in the choir singing the song. They had to learn Inuit language and they did an amazing job. If you know her you could even spot her in between the other women in the official music video.

One of my favuorite movies! It's not as groundbreaking as many other amazing animated movies, but Brother Bear holds a special place in my heart. I love the intro. It's beatifully animated and tells us everything we need to know about the brothers. The soundtrack is charming and nice. That music while Kenai is chasing and fighting the bear has to be my favourite. The colour pallete is so beautiful. The animals look soft and hugable. The story is tragic but still has a lightness to it, because of the bear shenanigens. As a kid, I loved the humor of this movie. Still do, actually. I didn't know the moose had accents though, since I grew up with the Dutch version of this film. (Solid dub btw, the rams were done really well). Koda's scared and sad expression when he finds out what happens, as well as him reuniting with his mom, always gets me. And the ending is so heartwarming and nice, though a bit strange. Than again, this whole movie is a bit strange.

Definetly check out Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron if you haven't seen it yet! It's a 2002 Dreamworks animated movie and was a fav growing up.

This is an amazing movie - every time I watch it I see new things. Even just watching your reaction I noticed something new. During the Family song, the lyrics sing “I see the way we used to be” as Koda and two other cubs reach up for the seagulls, mirroring the 3 brothers in the opening song! Mind blowing animation and top notch storytelling yet again ♥️

They are best known for their titular roles on The Bob and Doug McKenzie Show on SCTV from the 1980’s. Almost like an SNL sketch show. Rutt and Tuke are very stereotypically Canadian but so funny 😆.

The landscapes in this movie are amazing, wish they were real.
