CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal) gets upset after his father advises him to be more like his brother Sam (Tobey Maguire).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Jim Sheridan's film, adapted from Susanne Bier's 2004 movie, concerns Captain Sam Cahill (Tobey Maguire), a Marine who receives orders to ship out for yet another tour of duty in Afghanistan. But before he leaves his supportive wife, Grace (Natalie Portman), and his two elementary-school-age daughters, Sam picks up his black sheep brother, Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal), who has finished a prison stretch for robbing a bank. While overseas, Sam's aircraft gets shot down and he's thought dead. Back home, irresponsible Tommy gets his act together in order to be an anchor for Grace and the girls, and the two grow emotionally -- though not physically -- close. As the family finally begins to make peace with their grief, soldiers rescue POW Sam and he returns home. Sam's experiences overseas have caused him such emotional turmoil, he has a difficult time adjusting to civilian life, and soon his fear and paranoia manifest themselves in the form of jealousy for his brother's relationship with his wife. Sam Shepard and Mare Winningham co-star as the brothers' father and stepmother.

In this short scene you can really tell how much the brothers love one another and really dont consider each other mistakes or overachievers or none of that. It's made very clear that the tension originates from the father and I think that's a more accurate representation of what it's like to be seen as a failure in your father's eyes. The idea that the brothers have each others backs and love one another no matter how different their lifestyles are.

I like how quickly tobey shouts out "tommy!" after the outburst almost as while its happening. You could say it's him jumping the gun cause you know what's next on the script but I think it's showing how his character knows what his brother is thinking and how he'll react before it even happens.

As a father he's probably frustrated and ashamed of his son, and even though his sentence is over he may not have come to terms with his son being free. Priya Saha The Danish version is actually quite good! The acting surpasses the acting in this movie, even though everyone did a great acting job, too. The tension is overwhelming!

I always hated parents who tend to compare the achievements of their favorite child to his/her sibling and even has the balls to tell them "you should be like your brother/sister". Every person have different talents and skills, you just don't force them out of it. If the kid is a delinquent you don't rub to their face of how much of a disappointment they are to your eyes because its also the same reason why they became a delinquent in the first place.

Toby should have reprimanded his father for starting conflict with Jake with the food comparison bit. He gave warning to Jake ( don't know their character names) before he got out of hand but did nothing about his dad.

This is was our dinner table with slight role reversals. My older brother would make little jabs towards me and my dad would be the one saying knocking it off. 20 years later and I’m in much better place and his life is spiraling. I still love him and have his back and have never once rubbed it in his face. I just want to stop the dreams that keep me up at night. All the fights and disfunction. It’s like a constant reminder. Maybe it’s telling me I haven’t worked it all out in my head yet. Whatever it is I wake up almost exhausted like I was back than. I just wanted peace.
