When Sam's (Tobey Maguire) guilt becomes too heavy to bear, he lashes out at Grace (Natalie Portman) and destroys the kitchen.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Jim Sheridan's film, adapted from Susanne Bier's 2004 movie, concerns Captain Sam Cahill (Tobey Maguire), a Marine who receives orders to ship out for yet another tour of duty in Afghanistan. But before he leaves his supportive wife, Grace (Natalie Portman), and his two elementary-school-age daughters, Sam picks up his black sheep brother, Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal), who has finished a prison stretch for robbing a bank. While overseas, Sam's aircraft gets shot down and he's thought dead. Back home, irresponsible Tommy gets his act together in order to be an anchor for Grace and the girls, and the two grow emotionally -- though not physically -- close. As the family finally begins to make peace with their grief, soldiers rescue POW Sam and he returns home. Sam's experiences overseas have caused him such emotional turmoil, he has a difficult time adjusting to civilian life, and soon his fear and paranoia manifest themselves in the form of jealousy for his brother's relationship with his wife. Sam Shepard and Mare Winningham co-star as the brothers' father and stepmother.

Doesn’t make sense. If they have truly have a good heart then this implies that they wouldn’t cross a line no matter the circumstance. Someone completely opposite would be more dangerous. They were already willing to cross that line even before any circumstances rose for them to get really angry. Thus making them the most dangerous.

Pola it's still domestic violence-it's meant to scare, and intimidate. He's understandably traumatized and upset but that doesn't justify his behavior. Yes, it's "just a film" but this happens in real life. Destruction of property is meant to intimate and scare. You're just wondering and on edge wondering when they'll hit you next. (I've been there.)

Telmen Batbayar she didn't have sex with his brother- she confessed that they had kissed and explained that it was because she got caught up because she missed him so much. They never had sex. The daughter lied to get the father upset. I empathize with what he went thorough. His anger is certainly understandable and it's ok to express that, but him terrorizing her by busting things in the kitchen isn't ok. It is possible to be both understanding of how someone feels while not condoning their actions just saying;) this film certainly touches on some very heavy issues.

I’m in the Air Force. This scene alone made me want to stay single while I’m enlisted. I’ve deployed a few times and I’ve heard horror stories about what people do when their spouses are deployed. It’s wicked.

I'm pretty sure all the people saying "he's just throwing a tantrum" didn't actually watch the movie or know what the movies about. The amount of emotion he shows here is phenomenal. So angry you lose the words or just don't know what to say, you are just so damn angry. This performance is perfect. He did a great job in this movie.

He not only did something really terrible just to get back to his family alive, but he can't tell them about it. Yet when he got back, they already moved on and forgot about him. That's peak frustration and pent-up anger right there. I think a lot of people would've killed in that anger given the same situation.

Tobey gets memed a lot, but he really doesn’t get enough credit as an actor. He’s seriously talented at conveying emotion in a way that’s realistic and raw. This scene is an incredible example, yet I actually think that’s part of the reason scenes of him have been memed as they have. For example, the ones in Spider-Man of him crying and such as that. When a lot actors cry in movies, they try to maintain aesthetics, looking perfect as tears roll down their face. Tobey ugly cries, and I appreciate that about his performances. When a real person gets angry, sad, or an extreme emotion, they don’t look good while doing it. I think it actually grounds his performances honestly, especially when he’s given a role like this to real push that emotional range.

@@jiroshiroyuki5236 tobeys audience goes on tom holland and andrew garfields work and call them trash, in my opinion, they all do a great job playing THEIR script, people say toms spiderman was bad cuz of iron boy jr and hes still acting like a kid, THATS his character, people dont like andrew's because of some of the bad writing, and some people dont like tobey's because of his "corny"lines even tho i loved them. Imo they all did equally amazing at playing their part in spiderman, but tobey is the best actor as he has most experience, but garfield shined in no way home the most and tbh i wasnt amazed by tobey in it

People dont like its Corny Lines bcuz they didnt live at the time where those jokes are funny, since there is a difference in Culture. with Garfield's goofy Peter its normal he will shine , mentioning the part where he Redeemed himself by saving MJ.

Saw this clip on Instagram and thought oh I'll watch that film. Now I cant forget that performance. What a heart wrenching scene. I dont feel like anyone is in the wrong in this scenario. Real life is painful. Who knows what people go through when they have loved ones in the army. Only the ones involved truly know 😢

The saddest part about all this is Sam just needed love and a genuine hug. All that anger, hurt and pain and he just wanted somebody to hold him and comfort him. You can see it in the end when he calmly closes his eyes and his face muscles are relaxed

I know it’s just acting but I do feel bad, because this has happened to so many vets where their wife cheated on them and the vets only find out when they get home. The vets had suffered, saw their friend's die, killed people just to get back home to find out the person they loved so much had cheated on them.

My friend was cheated on while he was in boot camp. I'm sure he felt this kind of anger when he heard about it. When a man leaves you so that he can build a better life for you, you better respect that and stay loyal. I wouldn't doubt that many of our soldiers come back home to this same exact situation only to get treated that they're the problem.😢
