"Brothers In Arms", a great tribute to all the men who have fought and died in or survived war. The special bond between them all is indescribable, But the lyrics in this song comes close to doing so. The song also stresses the senselessness of war. "But it's written in the starlight, and every line in your palm, We're fools to make war on our brothers in arms." I've had the album since it came out years ago. I liked the song, but I never listened to the words. In my opinion, one of the most moving songs I've heard. This song gets an A+ from me.

A song about those who've fought (and died) in war. "There's so many different worlds.... so many different suns. And we have just one world... but we live in different ones." Beautiful song and some of the bands most profound lyrics. Mark knopffler’s guitar is so gentle and emotive, you just sink right into it. Once you know what the theme is, you understand his frasing around the lyrics. It’s a sad song! This gets heard in the UK around poppy season, early November when we wear poppies to remember our war dead and those of other nations. Famously used as the backing track to the Two cathedrals episode of The West Wing. You need to listen to Latest Trick and Romeo and Juliet - again very clever lyrics referencing other well know songs.Your camping analogy is interesting.....🥂

Their official video shows scenes from WWI, and what seems to be Northern Ireland, but the lyrics suggest Vietnam or Malaya (mist covered mountains). I think their intention was not to point to any one war, but war in general. My two cents. Personally, I think of Biafra and the Congo crisis of the 60s when I listen to it. I think that’s because this and Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner were played together in a documentary of the mercenaries of Congo.

Part of the reason that Mark's vocals sort of fade away at the of sentences or seem "weak" is that song is sung from the perspective of a soldier laying dying on the battlefield in the aftermath of the battle. Although the first verses are indeed about the men from his unit/regiment, his brothers in arms", in the final verse the soldier realises the futility of war and that everyone, including the "enemy" are his brothers in arms. It's a very moving song. It was released in 1985 but was written in 1982 during the Falklands War and has become associated with that conflict.

My dream reaction for this channel is if you guys ever get to the live version of Telegraph road (Alchemy). This was Mark Knopfler's reaction to seeing teh British soldiers returning from the Falklands war in the early 80s. It's an anti war song, without being overly political, it's a song from the perspective of a dying soldier about how he feels about his buddies and the horrors of war in general, without taking a side.

That _Alchemy_ version of "Telegraph Road" (as well as "Once Upon a Time in the West" and "Tunnel of Love") is some of the best live rock put on record. The whole _Alchemy_ album is a masterpiece.

This song bored me. I won't deny the talent in the band, no way, but this song was a snoozer. I would WAY rather listen to November Rain or Don't You Cry for a good rock ballad, (you mentioned GnR, just keeping it familiar). But great job on this channel and Patreon!

In this song, Mark Knopfler sings about a soldier who is dying on the battlefield, surrounded by his comrades, who remain by his side as he slips away. It's a look at the folly of war and the plight of those who fight them. "We've got just one world but we live in different ones," he told the BBC. "It's just stupid, it really is. We're just foolish to take part in anybody's war."

The context of this song is important to appreciate its overall feel written in1985 in the wake of the Falklands war to honour the common soldier/sailor/airman....'Brotheres in Arms' and its haunting tones reflect the melancholy of all wars that also creates human bonds that last the rest of their lives..............Another great anti war song is 'ZOMBIE' written in 1994 towards the end of the 'troubles' in Northern Ireland by Deloras lead singer of the Cranberries who had an incredible individualistic voice and i think you both will find it both haunting and energetic at the same times. Their other main hits 'Dreams' and 'Linger' were both popular hits in their day....Better heard live.....cheers keep up the good work..

Great reaction. I think to really get into the 'headspace' of this song you first need to pay attention to the lyrics (because, regrettably, Mark Knopfler does mumble a good deal of it - but the hushed tones are all part of the mood, so I get it). It was written as a response to the Falklands War, which the UK & Argentina briefly fought in 1982, so the second criteria is to put yourself in the shoes of the servicemen that fought in this (or any conflict/war for that matter - regardless of what 'side' they're on). Then the lyrics become as poignant & to the heart as you can get - the juxtaposition of the battle field to the farm fields that the soldier was on to what they've come back to (or not for those that perished). I've never served, but I have quite a few family members (past & present) that have/are - and this song never fails to get my eyes misty! Mark's mournful guitar is just the piece-de-resistance and completely sets the mood throughout. It's a masterpiece in my eyes - and a wonderful tribute to all that serve. I highly suggest re-listening to it with these two points in mind - it might just change your perspective of it!

May I suggest "Hold The Line" by Toto, heard it this morning while driving to work, thought of you guys reacting to it if you've not heard it. It features one of the best drummers that ever lived, the late, great Jeff Pocaro and Steve Lukather on guitar. Guaranteed BANGER

_Hold the Line_ is not my favorite Toto song, but it's a good one. I'm always torn between _Pamela_ and _Ninety-nine_ as my favorite, but I'm open to conversation on the subject. I think _Africa_ is good, but overrated. Recently after hearing Yoyoka cover Jeff Pocaro's drum part I've come to respect _Rosanna_ in ways I never did before. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bLZdp7d90tuvn2Q.html
