No one likes a one wheel peel so it’s out with the open centre diff and time for an LSD swap in our BA Falcon.
Our previous ep’s in this series have seen us increase the power from our little Barra, but all the power in the world is useless if you can’t put it down.
So we went ahead and picked up an LSD diff and full cradle assembly from a turbo Falcon. These diffs are plentiful and can be had for anywhere from $250-300 upwards, having the added benefit of stronger axles and M86 centre/gears.
It’s now time to fit this assembly after replacing the clunky old diff bushes at home in our previous video, with both these videos being suitable for Falcons from BA, BF, FG and FGX as well as SX, SY and SZ Territory’s.
Hope you enjoy, thanks for watching and please consider subscribing for more.

Its worth mentioning that the ba bf and fg have variances in the cradle. The biggest one to be wary of is the ba bf has shorter shafts because the mounting points for all the arms on the ba bf cradle is closer to the centre. The diff bushes also change between ba bf at some point. I've recently just finished my diff swap myself installed bf mk2 xr8 m86 lsd into my fg mk1 cradle with custom spindle to fit up to my tailshaft. So good to have it back on the road. Also congrats on another good video I would have loved to watch this before I tackled it myself haha it was definitely easier removing the cradle then putting it back in myself haha

@Terry Drew You’re a legend mate, thanks for sharing the info. I can only research and share so much in the videos before it gets bogged down and dry, and I am a hack so there’s a definite limit to what I know. Having people like yourself adding their experience is awesome for me to see but more importantly continues helping others so thanks. And cheers for the kind words mate, hope you enjoy the videos 👍

Hears a tip undo the shocker 15mm from the body. Don't undo the wheel speed sensor just open the door and pop the rear seat up and unplug it. Don't undo the 3 15mm on the blade bushes arms. Undo the 2 18mms up further. Those 3 15mms can be an absolute bastard to undo. Always mark the position of the nut on the handbrake. And always always always mark where those weights on the the tail shift were or hellllo vibrations. Any questions in relation to anything ba bf. Holla. Dismantled thousands of them. No over exaggeration.

When you’re spinning the tyre you’re spinning the gear inside the diff, this spins the spider gear (the gear attached to the ring gear) in place, since it would encounter more immediate resistance spinning the ring gear around. The ring gear is connected to the driveshaft, then the transmission and maybe the engine. Now the rotation has gone through the spider gear it reverses. Think about a flat horizontal gear from above, engaged with two vertical gears, as it rotates clockwise, the gear on the right spins towards down, the left gear spins towards up.

Diff bushes are a bit of a pain but not the biggest deal, not going to stop the car driving at least. If you suspect they're gone maybe factor in $6-900 in the price when buying, seems to be going price if a workshop replaces them. Thanks for watching and good looking with the car shopping 👍

@chris929rr7
@chris929rr7 3 жыл бұрын
@@BrowneysGarage The brakes are a nice upgrade apparently and it's about all I have left to do on the old girl. All that is required is: - A set of BA brake upgrade caliper mounts from ebay. - A good used set of BF turbo 2005 onwards front calipers. - New 322mm front discs. - Some decent front pads. I'll be doing mine tomorrow and also using the oppertunity to paint the calipers red. I especially think red brakes against your green would really complete the look of your falcon.

@Chris 929RR Cheers for taking the time to give details, definitely sounds like something I need to look at doing when I get a chance. Great videos. When checking for LSD by jacking the car up. Ensure the transmission is locked, either Park or in gear being a manual. If not it might appear you have an LSD because the crown wheel will be rotating with the prop shaft. By locking this, only the half shaft and spider gears will rotate.

The two front bushes need to be seated in by 5mm from flush this will stop the knocking when driving on road. I have had the knocking when I bought my bf second hand and I did a lot of research and found out that if you don’t seat them in the 5mm you will have knocking even if you put new bushes in. I told my mechanic and he was happy to listen and insert them in and I haven’t heard that annoying knocking from the diff since.

You have probably seen an upgrade kit to fix the diff bush issues the diff hat is reinforced to take a different bush set up and the diff bush housing that gives you the trouble is ground off looks pretty impressive and I presume overall makes the weight bearing even in the rear suspension
@BrowneysGarage
@BrowneysGarage 3 жыл бұрын
Yep, the IMS twin diff bush you refer to looks like a great bit of gear. But at around $1k + labour if needed plus still having to add the price of the front bushes on top it's just not economical for a lot of people until you're pushing some good power and abuse through it. Maybe one day...

Don't know about NEED mate, I'm pretty sure the factory single spinner one would hold up depending on how it's driven. Even then it would probably be ok if driven hard. If you want to upgrade to an LSD though a second hand unit from a turbo BA/BF would be a good option. It'll be 3.46 (or a think more rare are 3.23) ratio so look for this and the LSD markings on the tag.

How have the nolathane bushes gone? I'm planning on using the nolathane NEK3 kit in my BF2 XR8 but a lot of people seem to have gone with the superpro bushes because of early complaints about the nolathane bushes being too harsh. You had any issues?
@BrowneysGarage
@BrowneysGarage 2 жыл бұрын
Missed this somehow. I've had no dramas so far, but it has largely been a shed ornament and not done a heap of KM's. Mind you if I did it again I would strongly consider the SuperPro bushes, purely for the one rear bush. As this video shows the Nolathane one pushes in far too easy, I'm a bit skeptical on that one bush - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hK50g92Wy9y6gIU.html

Yep that’s it mate. With enough abuse it’s possible but it would have to be A LOT or you’d be pretty unlucky, they’re fairly tough. Especially without big power and the factory single spinner.

Hey brownie or anyone that might know, would this process be the same with the utes, I assume so but just want to make sure before I pull it all off
@BrowneysGarage
@BrowneysGarage 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Tom. The broad process will be similar (remove shocks, brakes and handbrake out the way, unbolt anything holding it in etc) but the utes have a very different diff and spring setup - IRS and coil springs in sedans vs solid and leaf springs in utes. A workshop manual like in the below link should give you a good run down on the job, good luck 👍 www.allcarmanuals.com/factory-service-manual-70-Ford-Falcon-BA.html

@@tomchalker8966 Turbo ute diff or one from a ute optioned with LSD, either should work I'd say. Just double check your tail shaft will suit and they're not slightly different lengths if you can too, not sure on that one. And thanks for watching mate!

@@BrowneysGarage Good video, quick tip, removing the axles from the hubs are difficult, I use one of those cheap 20t hydralic pully pullers with a home made extension that's about 100mm long (five nuts tack welded and a bolt, male on one end female on the other end to use pullers original pointy bit) on the ram, cut two old rear disc rotor face's off to anchor too using 1/2" UNF nuts for the studs. Have to remove brake rotors on axles to be removed, it's the only way I've been able to remove them without damaging axle ends or hub bearings.
