We can also clearly see the evolution of photography techniques, mainly the lighting component but also the angle, focus and posing. Those early 1900 bodybuilders would look much bigger if they were photographed now using all the tricks in the book.

testosterone was commercially available in the mid 1940s in america and often sold in newspaper ads as an aid for old men to feel young again, its effects on muscle were known but that was seen as a side effect and not the mian desired effect, many bodybuilders were using it then ...it was not illegal and not against competition rules at the time that happened later

The first body builder was Eugene Sandow of England. He began in the late 1880's with strength and physique exhibitions. Sandow was one of the most fit natural men to ever live. He had a Physique similar to a natural Arnold Schwarzenegger. One of the first ever videos made was by the Thomas Edison film company. Edison himself shot Sandow posing in a leopard skin cloth .

I would love to see men’s physique get more popular. I just don’t understand the appeal of pumping unhealthy amounts of sex hormones into your body to achieve a physique that is not even appealing to the vast majority. Granted I’m not trying to put anyone down, just saying if we made natural competitions and physiques the standard in bodybuilding maybe less people would hop on gear

@@shweird the veins that protrude like that are a sign of inadequate circulation. Depressed veins can be a sign of dehydration however unless you’re in the medical field I doubt you would recognize their appearance. It's not like today when those who were genetic beasts were very likely to get into it. Most of the guys who could have looked impressive were farmers, blacksmiths etc. Keep in mind too that food was very seasonal and few people had money for meat all the time. Most humans had parasites which didn't help growth either. They had exercises for what they were trying to achieve, but they were far different from what we would consider ideal. If you could send a modern man back to then who has good genetics and even though he'd almost certainly have lower test, if he knows the training and we could be sure to get him all the food he needs, he's not going to look on roids but he'd look very impressive.
