The Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) Model 1918 was designed by John M Browning and prototypes were demonstrated in February 1917. Orders were placed in July 1917 with the guns manufactured by Colt, Winchester and Marlin-Rockwell. Delivery started in February 1918 and were shipped to France in June 1918. However, they were not used in combat until September of that year, some 48 days before the Armistice. BARs, with very little modification were used in WW2, Korea, and in the Vietnam war. Animation created using Cinema 4D. Music credits are shown at the end of the movie.

John Browning's engineering is king. Fun Fact, did you know that this automatic system (Gas operated open tilt bolt with stock buffers.) is the exact same used in the FN MAG just turned upside down. the FN MAG and it's derivatives such as the M240B are the most widely used GPMG used today.

"The MAG uses a series of proven design concepts from other successful firearms, for example the locking mechanism is modeled on that of the Browning M1918 (BAR) automatic rifle, and the feed and trigger mechanisms are from the WWII-era MG 42 universal machine gun."

And really heavy to carry
@RenKnight347
@RenKnight347 Жыл бұрын
I've read somewhere that the M1918 BAR by itself, weighed in at around 16 pounds. And, by the time that the bipod, bandolier ammo belt and ammo is added to the equation (25 pounds of gun and support equipment to carry), most guys that had the unfortunate opportunity to lug it around usually ended up losing the bipod somewhere. And, if that wasn't enough, the way that the snap buttons on the bandolier belt was designed, there would be a good chance that the buttons would make an indent in the ammo magazine box if one had to go prone in a real hurry. Thus, there could be feeding issues as the end result. In addition, changing of the barrel was to say the least very time consuming, if not recommended in the field of battle. The M1918 BAR was also one of the preferred weapons of Bonnie and Clyde fame because of it's high rate of firepower.

Imagine if they used this concept of the BAR operating mechanic to make a weapon which is chambered in .308. Imagine a very smoothing full auto shooting with full rifle cartridge with the lowest of recoil while being catagorized as "Assault Rifle" insead of "Browning Automatic Rifle".

WRONG. The model 1918 had a semi-automatic mode, and full Auto. Please refer to 'Rock in a Hard Place'. The later model 1918A2, which did have a speed regulating device instead of the semi-automatic mode, was not introduced until 1939. This is shown at the end of my video.

4:15 what makes that thing, that trips the sear move so slow? There is this chamber and piston. Is it air, slowly seeping into the chamber, that slows it down?
@vbbsmyt
@vbbsmyt 5 жыл бұрын
Hi. The Rate Reducing mechanism introduced in the Model 1918A2 slowed the rate of fire from 500-600 rounds per minute to 300-400 rounds per minute. The spring and piston introduced a delay of about 0.1 sec between each discharge. In the animation, I wanted to show the operation, so had to slow down the action considerably, but in practice what is actually happening is that the piston is knocked back and then returns under spring pressure taking 0.1 of a second before releasing the sear. 송현창 I'm guessing you don't know English well. But I'm not really pointing out 'troubles' on the CSRG Chauchat; only that the BAR is somehow simpler. John Browning's one hell of a designer, eh?
@D8W2P4
@D8W2P4 6 жыл бұрын
+송현창 The hack job .30-06 conversion by a bad company was where most of the Chauchat being a bad gun came about. It did have some legitimate problems, 1. The open mags that collected dirt, though that's trivial to fix. 2. If you did constant mag dumping it would heat up and jam because of thermal expansion of the barrel which moves back and forth in a sleeve.
@baronprocrastination1722
@baronprocrastination1722 6 жыл бұрын
D8W2P4 I know both of these already. What I'm trying to say is that despite the already-simple construction that is the Chauchat (in 8mm lebel), Browning's design is somehow far simpler.

John Browning began his work on the M1918 in 1917 and the weapon first saw action September of 1918. World War I ended November 11, 1918. So, the technology clearly was from the First World War, not the Second WW.
