A note for anyone who can't make out who TF they're talking about at the start, it's Rod Smallwood, Iron Maiden's longtime manager.

I am here again, now, in 2021, listening to this interview with Bruce Dickinson interviewing Lars Ulrich. I have already seen interviewed James, Kirk and Rob, I just need to see interview LARS, to have me covering the whole BAND being interviewed. And, so now as we go ON, Bruce decribes how Rob Small had been a common guy in the 1980's that had been a known person that had been a PRODUCER or a person that connections to a producer or a guy that could help some musicians get in touch with some people that would REALLY help a great bunch of musicians make it in the music industry.

agree with DrZarbon about "Far bigger and more important' being an exaggeration..if anything , Steve Harris could take on that specific mantle...I say this despite the fact that Bruce is my favourite frontman of all time...but you cannot disregard the influence of Lars in the creation of Metallica and the influence the band has had on so many later metal acts....you can take shots at his drumming now or any of Metallica's post black albums but doesn't lessen the influence Metalica has had

Death Magnetic *would* be a great record if it was mixed better. The fucking loudness makes the music sound like crap.
@OhNyo699 жыл бұрын
Very true. Imagine DM with the production of Ronnie Rising! -drools-
@clutch11419 жыл бұрын
I agree it could have been better mixed, but, it was not meant to be radio friendly, which I thought was admirable and it was a well written and thought out album. I can put it on and listen all the way through anytime.
@EarendilUndomiel9 жыл бұрын
John Lacy Good mixing has absolutely nothing to do with radio friendliness. The original album sounds dull and weak because everything is so loud that the sound is distorted. You turn the volume down because the loudness hurts your ears, and then the music loses all its power and dynamic range. If it was better mixed it would sound a lot heavier and "powerful". Metal is supposed to convey a sense of power; Death Magnetic is the equivalent of beating a broken stick against wet rubber. The guitar hero versions are a lot less compressed and are a lot heavier.
@clutch11419 жыл бұрын
EarendilUndomiel I was not trying to assert that the mixing is all that keeps it from being radio friendly. It is just as much the 7 minute songs and extended jams that do that. I think the reason they went with these choices in mixing was because they were trying to give it a raw "garage days" kind of feel. Personally I would have preferred to have heard it actually recorded on cheap amateur equipment than the resulting sound of trying to make high end equipment sound raw. But whatever the details are, it wasn't an accident or the result of not knowing what they're doing.
@EarendilUndomiel9 жыл бұрын
John Lacy I can see what you mean, but I think the reason for all this really is that Rick Rubin has no idea what dynamic range is. Almost every album he has produced since the late 90's are compressed and too loud. I don't blame Metallica, it's definitely not their fault. I think Rick Rubin is the only one to blame here.

Okay, I am here NOW. I am now listening to Lars's comments to this video, I LOVE Bruce Dickinson, and also Lars, a bit. I am REALLY hoping that Lars is going to be a decent guy in these posts. As for Bruce, HE is really a decent man, so I doubt that HE would speak ILL of any person that has NOT done anything wrong. Okay, NOW, I am going to comment on Bruce's video with Lars. This whole video is 8:29. I will be TRYING to comment on things that just may NOT be all "easy peasy', so, I THINK it was Rod Smallwood. Whom HAD made METALLICA, so damn wanting to perform every damn song to PERFECTION. I MUST say that I have had NO idea that Lars had modeled Metallica after ANY other band. Personally, I have been a MAIDEN fan for DECADES, BUT, I DO LOVE seeing Bruce express his support to a band like METALLICA also. I have been a fan of Metallica since the 1980's, BUT, I DO SEE THAT METALLICA IS REALLY ALSO SPEAKING ABOUT SOME RECENT THINGS.

I understand why many fans may have felt St. Anger was a departure .... to me, that album was Kill 'Em All brought up-to-date. It's not anally produced, which really does take away some of the power of Metallica. I love the rawness, I love the honesty from all the players and James. I realize on hindsight it's seen as self-indulgent possibly, by James and the rest .... but I don't. I LOVE St. Anger, including Lars' drumming and open snare sound. It's tribal, that record. It's the reason they exist. It's not polished and overly precisely made. That level of production, how they make Death Magnetic and Hardwired ... it's about getting every note "right" .... and i'm not sure if that's the spirit of rock or metal. I like all their albums .... but i like the undilutedness of St. Anger .... it's a full band effort. And Bob Rock played great bass on there, no matter how the band sees Bob's talent. That album is thunderous, and raw, and songs like Monster, My World .... are what Metal Militia's mission statement was, sonically, to my mind, from the beginning. By the way, these are great little interviews Dickinson did ... he's an intelligent metal man, and just intelligent in general and asks questions that aren't run of the mill. Love it.
@David_Fellner4 жыл бұрын
One of my favorite things about St. Anger is that they weren't actually trying to make "good" music. They were just trying to express what was going on in their lives at the time. That's an unusual enough thing that, even if it doesn't make great music, it's still worth doing. Turns out, it also made great music in this case.

I wouldn't say "FAR bigger & more important", but whatever. I concede that Bruce is an amazing singer, though. But he seems pretty cool. I didn't pick up on too much "making fun of", to be honest. Apart from "Fridge Magnetic". XD I was actually really surprised because I expected Lars to have more ego & arrogance, because I think that's the main thing you hear about him. A very interesting interview.

Okay, I am here NOW, and I am hoping to respond to THIS video, Lars responding to questions that Bruce Dickinson is asking. And, I have seen that Lars DOES respect Bruce Dickinson, and Lars DOES respect James Hetfeild. And, so as this video goes on "My friend of misery" or "The unforgiven" COULD have been the BEST song to have been showing that it had been what shows what has been the best THINGS that COULD have been the best situation. IF Metallica has a song called "Cyanide", I have NO idea about it. And, I must admit that I have been really aware of the fact that Metallica HAS been mostly aware of how perhaps in this situation, Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden, has been able to have shown how any really good metal music band CAN be able to shown how they can come across as being.
@juliegogola46472 жыл бұрын
I have been here going on and on and on, and I am just NOW saying this BS now, because, I know for SURE that I had NO interest in "Saint Anger", not 1 damn BIT of a shit. And, so, I had NO way of thinking that ANYBODY would even help us in any way with it. Basically, I am going to say that maybe the next bit of video will maybe help us with seeing IF BRUCE will see that this new video will show the last bit of Metallica video. SO, basically, IF we were to just follow the whole "shabang" of the whole, and see that it is all best as being in power NOW, we can just perhaps see that my video common post will be shown. Sorry, but this seems like it would be a effort to say that maybe somebody OUT of the USA was going to help us responding the US way of reporting any type of dealing with some thinking about some music and or even dealing with having a bit of some music like the song "Drivers seat", by the band "Sniffin the tears", REALLY, I am here hoping that maybe the Metallica bit of the mention will be able to make the Metallica song matter enough so that we all will see and believe, IF it is really all worth BELIEVING.
@MyloshEK3 жыл бұрын
Who would believe this man..
@juliegogola46472 жыл бұрын
Okay, so, Lars has mentioned that the FIRST song is "cyanide', and so IF that is the truth, no wonder that anybody would mention cyanide as being a poison. BUT, When LARS mentions how playing "Sanitarium" had been done, and then the band had been able to play it again WITHOUT anybody making them have to suffer for using the song "cyanide", again. Basically, the song "Cyanide", had been a HIT SONG that I have NEVER been aware of. And, so, I THINK that I can go on here to fairly see how much Lars Ulrich can comment on the fair thinking of Bruce Dickinson when it comes to Metallica. AND now we all have heard that the song "Sanitarium" has been used as a subject matter in which many people have seen that it can be shown as a subject matter that will show how some people can be abused. The song "Sanitarium", is great song that is about the abuse of some mentally ill people. Well that is a part of how it can be interpreted. SORRY IF this all has made it hard to just mention that Metallica after the "some kind of monster" tour is what is what we are all trying to respond here to.
