Fascinating. This technique, no doubt combined with many hours of practice and repetition, explains how Bruce Lee was able to generate knockout power from a straight punch. It seems related to the way that power is generated in a tight left hook punch, starting with a drive off the rear foot, followed by a violent pivot around the left hip and at the waist, with the power coming out at the very end of the punch. Bruce Lee appears to have been truly masterful at analyzing the mechanics of the human body and applying them to his techniques. Years ahead of his time. I think those who dismiss him in the modern world of MMA would have been severely humbled, if they were able to actually meet him, in a no rules confrontation ! Awe and respect from me !

Nice content. I like to practice staying loose and fluid, then rapidly accelerate the punch. Then if you relax just after the punch it allows your fist to come back without having to pull it back so much. It is also fun to practice punching from various hand positions, such as fixing your hair, from the waist, from arms crossed, etc. Tightness and tension kill your speed and power, shake it out, stay loose like Bruce.

an excellent explanation on how it's done is in the book, "bruce lee's fighting method", which was divided into something like 4 books & later became 1 big book. it really helped me learn how to punch at least as hard as most heavyweights, aside from turning my jab into a knockdown punch (in spite of being a pretty skinny guy who isn't very strong, due to some health problems). it's an excellent book.

It’s like watching Elvis Presley dance 🤣🤣🤣 Aight, but all jokes aside, in martial arts; power is generated from the hips/core engagement. Bruce Lee, mastered that concept.

The wing chun punch is vertical, and most karate is horizontal. For their technical reason they do their punches their way. I think that we stretch our hand and let its natural way position take its course. What I observe with my hand when I stretch them forward with my palms and fingers open and straight pointing forward is that my arms and palm will position in diagonal- my left palm will diagonal toward the right; and my right palm toward the left. So I practice punching with my fist turning diagonally when about to impact and continue turning it to horizontal, like in classical boxing punch and Karate; Applying Shorin Ryu punching technique of twisting the fist upon impact,

True. Focusing on power makes your muscles tighter, which slows you down. If we focus on speed instead, the right muscles would naturally contract at their maximum only at the end of the punch, making it both fast and powerful!

I was first trained in JKD and Muy Thai then in my later years trained in boxing, instead of the fist being vertical I used this exact technique but just altered my wrist by twisting it horizontally, JKD combined with pure boxing is amazing Edit: it’s hard to explain how to get that power and force from the energy coming from the forearm if you haven’t experienced it, I can only ask people why they think Bruce Lees hands shake during/after a close range punch

Thanks for all the videos! Your a great instructor, your videos have really helped me find flaws in my own thinking, one of the best tips I've gotten is about imagining pitching a bucket of water, that ideology of transferring energy changed my entire view of generating power, it still feels awkward to do, but I know that is a good sign, new techniques and effective ones usually feels awkward.

The interior rotation of sifu's forward knee goes against body mechanics. Sifu flinches with his face a lot in his demonstrations. I agree with most concepts depicted yet the glaring mistake is where sifu is directing energy back to his body (recoil) the energy from his jab goes into torqueing his forward knee inside. Otherwise, displaying the jab like this and having people practice this way will further enhance my defense due to subtle cues that will look like major telegraphs now. Love all your JKD videos, keep up the content!

You must understand that the power of the punch comes from the left foot...let it travel through to like a wave...don't punch deliver the power to the target.,.don't punch push and reset...everyone has the power not everyone has the strength...everyone must understand that power is eveywhete...strength is an individual power...the stronger you are the more power you have as an individual...lee learned that power is something you use strength is something you have...together you become formidable separately you are only strong...be formidable not strong..,

This was entertaining and enlightening. I enjoyed seeing this man's rendition of the lead straight. Some of it is quite different than my rendition of it. I think the way I do delete straight As more for the working class average athlete type of person, or non-athletic person. If you stripped of herkey jerky motions and allow the fist to lead the body's rotation will be a lot easier for the average person to pick up.

Thank you for making these videos; it is wonderful to see skillful practitioners share their passion for the martial arts. I have an observation about how the punch is performed that I wanted to share. Please believe me that it is not my intention to offend. From my understanding the lead straight in Jun Fan Gung Fu is non telegraphic. Si Jo Lee advocated that the hand moves first. I feel initial flexion of the rear leg telegraphs the punch. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I think he'd agree. Dan agrees -- I 've seen him say it in another video. At best, hand and legs move simultaneously. I think that max power generation was the goal in this demonstration, with no real focus on disguising the punch. He was even kind of bobbing and weaving inbetween punches... ya don't do that when you are about to cobra bite some dude trying to front on you...
