I really appreciate you showing the techniques in a real sparring situation. So many martial artist KZfaqrs out there that demonstrate these sort of drills against a compliant partner. Also, I can personally vouch for the flick backlist. I used to use this all the time in point and full contact kumite and it was the technique that landed the most. (I liked it even more than a lead jab, and I had a boxing background)

I often used the flick punch when shoulder rolling in boxing. The reason it is so effective is because it comes from under the line of sight, I remember speaking to sparring partners and they all hated it with a passion, one thing not shown here is the flick, rolling under the oppositions counter punch, changing angle, and then a flurry combination. You don't need any power, in fact I found using just enough to touch the opponent making them close their eyes was enough to get a split second advantage.

An important detail on the flick strike is to not just use the power of the arm to strike but use it as a vector to transferts your weight and the leg power by turnig your hips from the outside to the inside, it's tricky and we can barely see it in lee's movies but it's a detail that makes a huge difference, and properly done you can event move the heavy bag

Nice job! A great collection of techniques, and I really liked the way you included sparring examples where the techniques worked and where they didn’t. That’s a really useful approach. With respect to the flick punch followed by shuffle step and side kick, I think Lee actually used a pendulum step in that case. The flick punch tends to bring your weight forward as you extend to get reach. That’s a perfect setup to use the pendulum step. You replace your supporting leg with your rear leg in a pendulum motion as your weight transfers back towards the rear and you execute the side kick. A sniffle step doesn’t have the same forward-backward weight transfer, because you don’t lean forward and put your center of gravity over your centerline as you do in a pendulum step. That little forward lean gives you a bit of extra reach for the flick punch. That said, this can be done with a shuffle step. You just don’t get quite the same reach on the flick punch.

Backfist as used in wing chun, wide bouncing stance always ready to strike as used in fencing….two examples of how Lee utilised elements of other martial arts to find what worked for him, and show the rest of us how we should just follow either him or anyone else just for the sake of it but do what works for us.

I practiced that opening strike in the beginning of the video A LOT when I did karate in my youth. As an opening attack it works very well, assuming you follow up and through. And that step up side kick is also very effective, if used well. My friend and I used to kick each other and see how far we could send the other flying. My record, of going flying, was 12.5 feet.

When you do that fake punch and then do that side kick, your side kick becomes much faster too. I remember Lee talking about that in his book.

Awesome video. There were a couple I wished was on here, such as the side kick to the knee, and the oblique kick. My fav has always been the side kick or the inverted to the guard hand or the groan. I’m currently training JKD not formally, but taking bits and pieces for my personal repertoire. Would love to train somewhere formally, but I have been doing my best trying to self-train and sparring with friends from time to time. I feel good bout it, but I know there are a lot of errors as far as technique that I need to correct. Awesome video if I haven’t said that already. 👍🏽

Hey man I’ve been training muay thai for a few months now but honestly more drawn in by the boxing aspect of it. I know MT is considered to be a more well rounded martial art but i am considering switching to purely boxing and maybe incorporating some MT now and then. Which style do you prefer?

I use to like muay thai the most, but now I find I am becoming more and more of a martial artist, trying everything and learning as much as I can. I use to hate on karate, but now i incorporated a lot of karate movement and tactics, mix it with muay thai tactics and into an mma stance.

Just be careful, training in MT for a few months is not enough to fully grasps its benefits and tactics. Especially if you are only training once or twice a week. Boxing is a great sport that all martial artist should train in but you will be very vulnerable in the clinch and serious leg kicks. My suggestion is to at least get a year or MT, so you have at least the basics of the foundation down, and then transition. Just my opinion.
