Charming video of Bruce Springsteen accepting an award at Ellis Island, and inviting his mother and aunts on stage. He discusses his Italian, Irish and Dutch ancestry, as well as his feelings about immigration. The event was hosted by his friend, Brian Williams.

As a young female (in high school when Born to Run came out) one of the things that struck me so profoundly in Bruce's music was his obvious respect for what might be termed the 'Feminine' -- it was subtle but unmissable and *so* unusual in music at that time (and still for that matter) -- he is, as people have so aptly remarked here, as good as it gets as far as a human being (and a resident of this peculiar country) is concerned -- a 'paragon' in every good sense of the word . . .

Or Rush Limbaugh for years and years bashing drug users - saying they ought to be locked up and rot in hell for a medical problem (I am not talking about a heroin addict who kills an old lady to get money for dope) - and yet he becomes a pill addict lying to doctors and such. Your politics do not define the essential part of who you are. Politics do not totally define a person, and no group of people along the political spectrum has complete ownership over all of the problems. Many of them are systemic. I mean, do you really think that dudes like Benjamin Franklin, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson envisioned a nation where people would be career politicians?

Yes - he's a useful idiot for evil democrats. A person with his influence does a ton of damage by supporting wretched human beings like obama and the hildabeast. Just recenently, elizabeth warren and kamala harris called blue-collar, ordinary guy Darren Wilson a murderer....you won't hear a word from the working-class hero bruce springsteen. He's a really good guy at heart but he's gullible. Gullibility usually does little damage to others, but springsteen influences people all over the world and so his support for hideous leftists and his complete silence regarding leftist violence, FBI abuses of power, obama and holder's war on cops, etc. is very damaging. Good God! I don’t know anything about “willard2729,” but with confidence I can say that he has not a lick of sense. Lovely to hear these personal stories. Perhaps especially resonates with me because my grand father too came to America through Ellis Island. He came from Norway and married my grandmother, conceived in Norway and born in America. My Mom's family was Scottish-Irish-Celtic in tradition although they came through Ellis Island long before, eventually moved from the East coast to California, where I was born as a fourth generation Californian. Either way, roots in America go back to Ellis Island on both sides of the family as I imagine is the case for many who through immigration, became Americans today.

Hi John, Ellis Island gives several awards each year - sometimes to immigrants themselves, but often to notable descendants of Ellis Island immigrants. I can't speak for your immigrant ancestors, but I'm grateful that mine who came through Ellis Island from present-day Slovakia, Poland and Ukraine to work in the coal mines in PA had the courage to be "hopeful wanderers." I consider myself to be one of their many lucky beneficiaries!

Of my 8 great-grandparents, 7 arrived from Ireland between 1847-1867. Ellis Island was not open yet so most landed in New York. But they were also looking for a new life.

I listened to (and watched) this video twice, but I didn't hear the reason why Springsteen was given the award. Furthermore, I think my most recent immigrant ancestors would take exception with his comments about immigration.
