Written by Bruce in his 20's, this is one of the best songs ever written! I'm so pleased you're getting to see the Live In New York City series, its truly incredible. Many more amazing performances from that concert, I hope you get round to watching more!

As Bruce said, when he got the band back together after a 10 year hiatus, they came back as better musicians

One of the great things about Springsteen's long career is that you can compare performances across multiple decades to see how he's evolved.

You've hit on one of the big reasons why, show after show, year after year people keep coming back to Bruce's shows. Some have come hundreds of times! It's because things keep changing and what is old is new again !

Fun fact about the sax solo, Bruce confirmed a rumor on his 2022 interview with Howard Stern that he made Clarance practice that sax solo for 16 straight hours when the song was originally written. To me, behind thunder road, this is my 2nd favorite Bruce song. It’s a dream to hear this performed live but it’s honestly become so rare since Clarence’s passing and I can understand why. It was only performed twice the entire 2023 tour. I’m so glad you checked this version out and look forward to more Bruce reactions in the future!

Solid review, Dave! Absolutely loved the technical breakdowns once again and how you got how this version has matured so much better than the one from 25 years before. I was so happy you gave it 5 stars. Thought you might take a half off having already heard the song before. But that score just shows just how incredible this performance is. Its a masterpiece of a live performance. I hope he plays it when you see him live!

I’m still waiting for a request of American Skin (41 Shots) from this concert. I’m surprised one of your gold tier members hasn’t recommended it yet. It’s a modern-day, post-classic period epic.

It was this concert that got me back into Springsteen in a big way (enjoyed Born in the USA as a kid). Got to see him live in 03, 08 and 12, best live gigs I've ever been to.

No question that this performance has a bigger sound than Hammersmith (1975). Great review… I enjoyed your detailed comments regarding Clarence Clemons’ solo, in particular. Very informative. Very well done reaction to a 5-star performance! Thanks, David. 👏👏

I agree, the tale of the Magic Rat and the Barefoot Girl is storytelling at it best - and the earlier versions emphasized the lyrics in a better way. And the Big Man's lungs was in better shape before illness set in, however great he sounds here. But I also agree this version is great fun listening to. I was lucky to catch this in Oslo 'round the turn of the century, where they also played "Jungleland". I was floored!

Another thing to mention now that I've finished the video, the band lineup actually only had 2 more members than it did in 1975, both of which dont do much on this song What REALLY made the change for the sound was these things 1 - Bruce started body building and training his voice in the mid to late 80s 2 - Max switched from jazz styled drumming to a heavier more barebones rock style of drumming 3 - for the reunion tour in '99, Bruce shifted the bands sound from primarily being centered around Clarence and the keyboards to being alot more guitar oriented, with Bruce, Steve, and Nil's guitar being more prominent in the mix than before

Five stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This version has the urgency of the protagonist, Bruce sings it spitting the words, and the band sounds like a locomotive at full speed. Clarence makes magic with the sax 🪄🎷

Don't forget to mention "Professor" Roy Bittan's role here on the Piano. "Jungleland", "Because the night" or "Racing in the Street", in which Roy is shining, are three songs by example of many many more, where Roy is responsible for the typical E-Street Band sound.

Great reaction! But one thing; the bigger sound is because the band evolved. On this 1999/2000 tour there was no 12 or 14 piece band. (No horn section and aditional backing singers) but just the core E Street Band (including Patti an Niels who joined in 1984)

Thanks Dave - glad you enjoyed it. Both versions have merit - from a younger rougher around the edges group in a more intimate smaller theatre to a polished well oiled machine with top line gear in MSG . All about that sax ... period. To me - only version of this that comes close is the 2012 Sweden performance where Bruce called an audible and played for the first time live since Clarence's passing - Jake stepped up and honoured his uncle. As mentioned - the Foundation of EStreet nation - Gary W Tallent on bass. Longest playing bandmate of Bruce's- he was the long haired hippy in Thundercrack back in 1973. Still think Mrs H would enjoy this b4 you see the concert.

I honestly think the 1980 Tempe Arizona version of Jungleland is the best, but he's also much younger and much, much more active (more crowd interaction too)

This version of the song is 25 years after the version originally reviewed. The only additional members to this version of E Steet are Patti on acoustic guitar and vocals and Nils Lofgren. Garry W Tallent is the name of The Bass player. Great review

As a huge Bruce fan, I’ve always thought this song was overrated. I mean it’s technically a good song, I won’t say otherwise. But it never did much for me. Give me Thunder Road, Candy’s Room, The Promise, Drive All Night or Downbound Train any day over this song.
