I'm in tears again, this song, people who know me, know it is MY song!! The minute the Professor's piano and now Soozie Tyrell's violin hit the opening chord, I melt, mentally and physically I just fall into the story of tree "Magic Rat" and the "Barefoot Girl", the tragedy, some people say it's a follow up song too "Incident of 57th Street" featuring the story of "Spanish Johnny". With all that, this is Clarence's song, his moment too shine, a classic show stopper when he performs this and usually after Bruce always comes over and hugs him, it is always a beautiful and tender moment. The rumour is during the recording of "Jungleland" Bruce had Clarence play this for 16 hours straight before they had the version down, and then went out that night too tour. True or not, I don't know, but, make for good story!!! Maybe not your cup of tea, but, for me, it's the whole teapot!!

You brought up an EXCELLENT and often times overlooked song...Incident on 57th Street. Definition of rock opera. Beautiful song.

" barefoot girl sitting on the hood of a Dodge, drinking warm beer in the soft summer rain" Pure poetry to a teenage boys ears - I remember being frustrated at first, but then learning to appreciate the poets we had to study in English Lit at the time This song ages so well - sounded great in '75 - was sort of hoping your reaction was going to be to his New York City reunion performance a quarter century later - his vocals had aged like 20 year old scotch and the sax solo may have brought tears to your eyes Regarding the hat - probably just nervous energy- 25year old Bruce was usually a whirling dervish on stage- standing still would have been hard for him- Also there was a ton of pressure on him then - 3rd record of a 3 album deal - make or break time- First European show with a crap-ton of hype , 25 years old and not comfortable with his fame yet

For the studio version of the solo Bruce literally made Clarence perform it note for note and it took 17 hours to complete it. It's Clarence's most iconic solo and one of the most iconic classics in Bruce's catalog

Epic story telling, this is from the Hammersmith concert London in 1975, Bruce 26 years old, first tour appearance with the band in Europe. Everything is new and exciting. Clarence with the iconic sax solo which was modified in the next decades and extended a little bit. This is the song which brings all "Tramps" (Bruce fanbase) always in to tears, after Clarence passed away and his nephew Jake is continue to play it in concert. Legendary the concert in Göteborg July 28, 2012 when it happened the first time. So therefore it is iconic for us. 19:03 you did not understand it, probably you did after the last chord has been played.

The story of the Rat and the Barefoot Girl is one of the most touching penned in a rock'n'roll framework - it very much mirrors Sprintsteens upbringing i New Jersey, the warmth of romance loosing out to the bleakness and roughness of the city...

This was their first show outside the US. There had been a ridiculous amount of hype and Bruce was a nervous wreck. That’s why he kept fidgeting with the hat.

I think you might have a little different review of the studio cut. You need to realize that in a very high energy performance that lasts nearly four hours, this song would normally be deep into the third set. Therefore, the half spoken word vocals at the beginning is very much a recovery period for Bruce. If you notice, his soft vocals at the end sounded somewhat more polished than those at the beginning. Chances are they may have just finished a barn burner like “Rosalita”. ✌🏼😎

Recently came across your channel, and have watched several of your Springsteen reviews. As a huge Bruce fan, I really enjoy your breakdowns - from your musical/musician background, your insights are quite informative and appreciated. I don't always agree with some of your criticisms, but that's okay. His lyrical and vocal styles I know and love, learning about the music style and sound is your specialty. That's why I enjoy your breakdowns.

Bruce was pissed. The Born to Run album, his career make or break, had just been released. Now his first trip to England and the promotion claimed Bruce to be the greatest artist of all time. He got very angry, ran around ripping up the flyers in the theater before the show. Pissed but motivated this show was amazing even while he was both trying to hide from the hype (the hat) and give a great E Street Showcase. He would return to London at the end of the European tour and supposedly give a very different, more confident performance. But the look and feel of this show is one of my favorites....

For Bruce, you have to do Rosalita Come Out Tonight (from really any concert), Ramrod (from Barcelona 2002), Waiting On a Sunny Day (from really any concert), Sherry Darling (from the No Nukes Concert), New York City Serenade (from Rome), Born in the U.S.A. (From Madison Square Garden 2000), (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher (From the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame 25th anniversary) Kitty's Back (From Perth 2014), and Spirit In the Night (from Rio Lisboa 2016). All amazing!

Been a Springsteen fan for 40 years...and this song still gives me chills, especially when the Big Man takes his turn blowing that sax. It's rock-n-roll storytelling at its absolute best. As I've gotten older, my tastes actually got a lot heavier (Jinjer, Avatar, and many others, for example), but when the news of Clarence Clemons passing hit...the first time I heard this song after that, I wept. It still makes me misty remembering. RIP, Clarence.

Another awesome reaction. The fact that you could approach it objectively even though it's not in your wheelhouse and give such a great score is one of the reasons I think that you are one of the best on KZfaq. I'm not a musician but I greatly appreciate the knowledge you share and your explanations of what you are hearing; pointing it out so effectively. Thank you.

Jungleland. One of Bruce and E Street's best songs. I've been privileged to hear it live three times and its never boring to get. Clarence Clemon's iconic saxophone solo, recorded for the Born To Run album, over 16 hours. This, however, is not one of the best versions. This performance actually comes from Bruce's very first performance outside of America ever. November 18, 1975, at the Hammersmith Odeon. Bruce was riding on the success of Born To Run and the hype of both the album and himself. The previous month, he found himself on the cover of Time and Newsweek, in the same week. Unheard of back then. So the promoters hyped the crap out of this show. Posters were stuck on the wall proclaiming 'finally, London is ready for Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band'. Bruce did not approve of the hype built up by media saturation. He preferred to let the music do the talking and let the audience make up their own mind. So Bruce went in to a rage and tore all the posters down. The result is he still hadn't calmed down when the show started, which results in a somewhat subdued Bruce compared to his usual lively and engaging self, and continually messing with his oversized beanie. If you want to see this song at its best live, with a much better performance from the band all around, Tempe 1980 is great :)

Great cuts from that live record: - She's The One - Rosalita (Come Out Tonight) - Quarter To Three - Detroit Medley She's The One is my absolute favorite version of that song, and is high in the running for my favorite Springsteen song in general thanks to the way it's performed here. Also: I still prefer the full band version, but the different arrangement of Thunder Road is pretty cool from this show as well.

Just the fact that the whole time you are watching this video you are rocking quickly back and forth giving off the implication of impatience and I could tell you did not get the song, not it's beauty in structure, rich and vivid story detail tragedy, musical brilliance. But hey, all good. if it don't move ya', it don't move ya'.

I'll add...the studio version probably would have been better for a first listen. The dynamics are incredible as Bruce wanted that Spector "wall of sound" kind of production on the album.

Music is so derivative, bits and pieces borrowed, in this case, something showing up a couple years later in one of the most known songs by Meatloaf, Bat Out of Hell. And I never noticed it before: at 8:41 or so, the guitar, these few notes/bars (whatever, my musical vocabulary isn't that great) but does anyone else hear something that appears in Bat Out of Hell, towards end of song in that brilliant guitar solo? This song though, Springsteen was a huge figure for me in high school, where I grew up in a depressing steel town in NE Ohio (Bruce wrote about us - "Youngstown") and all I wanted was to get out of there. Bruce's music personified escape for me. That sax solo brings tears to my eyes every damn time, even more so with CC's passing. Glad you checked this out, don't know your score yet and it doesn't matter (and not in a bad way towards you) because this is just a part of the fabric of my life. Take care! 🤘✌

Fair review even if I don't agree 100%. As others have pointed out, his first overseas tour and he seems self-conscious at times. As also pointed out, he was under the pressure of a massive hype campaign and didn't always react well to it. What I didn't see mentioned (unless it was buried in a reply) was that this was (in Bruce's mind) a legendarily horrible show where the band was practically booed off the stage. That is until someone actually looked at the footage three decades later. This is not the tight band that it would shortly become. Max Weinberg and Roy Bittan were relatively new to the line-up. But just like any other era of the E Street Band, there is much here to love if you are a fan. And new or not, their addition, as well as Bruce's ever tightening writing, moving away from his more florid and jazzier urban epics (though I love those too) helped make the band the group of killers it was by the time of the Darkness tour. Not the best version of Jungleland ( one of the last of those urban epics) or even the best song from that show to react to (I'll co-sign the shout-outs to She's the One) this is still indicative of one of the best bands to ever do it and the towering creative force of it's leader.

From my understanding Bruce was minimally super nervous at these shows. and he felt he didn’t live up to expectations afterwards, to the point he apologized for the performance. so stage fright and just doing random things to get through the show.

Not the greatest video of the song, but it still struts its stuff. The band sounds almost like they were jet-lagged compared with some later live recordings. Based on the date of the concert this was very soon after they released the album.

Regarding the hat, I think it is a combination of 2 things. He doesn't have a guitar in his hand, so his hands are free, so he is fidgeting, I think. Also, during these two shows, he had the flu and may have had a fever during this show.
