Oh man. The "78 Intro" to Prove it All Night is legendary amongst hard core Bruce fans. These live shows from Bruce are legendary themselves, and Prove it was considered one of the highlights of the show. The studio version doesn't have the long intro, but this was a live concert, with a lot of songs played before and after this. You like what you like though. Good review. I continue to appreciate them.

Love the iconic 1978 piano and guitar intro to Prove It All Night. The intro sets the mood and it builds tension. It crescendos right up to the opening chords of the song where it explodes. The song then rocks, and then Springsteen brings the song full circle with his guitar outtro. I disagree with your argument about the extended intro, This song was the cornerstone of the legendary 1978 tour. However, props to you for noting the contributions of pianist Roy Bitton and organist Danny Federici.

In my opinion, this is the best way to play this song. I would like to have this as the original on the album. And the "long" intro must be seen in the context of the show. I like it so much, this is the way a guitar sound must be... with a Telecaster, the only guitar you need!

David.....keep your cool, man! This is the LIVE version so why not put an intro in front?🤷🏼‍♂️ Between us fans this called "78 Intro" is considered "cult". Album version is without it. But thanks for reacting anyway! 😉 👋🏻

Opinions of course, but ironically the fan base begged for decades for Bruce to bring back the extended "78 Intro" which he did to some extent the past decade. The intro was a rare case of Bruce soloing for a long time.

Good review and fair score - it is your review, you put honest thought into it This is a case where I believe context is key - 44 years ago., Bruce only had 4 albums in his catalogue- and depending on where this fit into the concert - the longer intro may seem more appropriate - perhaps a bit of a break for the voices I think a good comparison would be Racing in the Street with perhaps the most beautiful piano outro - where Bruce becomes an ESB fan and just listens to the band " the professor " Roy Bittan - still the king of the piano on E Street The late phantom Dan Federici ( damn melanoma) on the organ- I think he was usually on a Hammond B3 RiP Clarence Stevie, Gary and Max The classic ESB Thanks JFK- sounded great

I’m a little disappointed with the reaction to this one. I have been hoping to see you react to the ‘78 Intro version. Of Prove It All Night, thinking you would find it a slam dunk. As a Springsteen fanatic I have always held this one up as a my favorite libe highlight of the ‘78 tour ( not necessarily this particular performance). I love hearing Bruce tearing into that Telecaster, something he doesn’t do often enough. Oh well, thanks for reacting.

The whole 78 tour was about intros it set the atmosphere of the song, the story he told his audience. As I said my personal and for a lot of bruce fans the best thing he ever did. The whole show was about intros. Thunder road, prove it all night, point blank, because the night. Rosalita, it told a story, it was more than the single song it was the whole atmosphere and that made the 78 tour the most intense shows ever. Allthough you can say the river shows were better, songs more straightforward, the band better, but song for song 78 for me was Bruce at his best. Please again do a review of Because the Night 78 largo. Not Houston or Passaic.

He got the song idea from a cab driver who said his day consisted of proving it to kids, his boss, and then all night to his wife.

This song's intro on the album is not usually this long. This might not have been the best version for a 1st time listen. I would find either another live performance, not from this era or just listen to the album version. Because based on the date, I can tell you that Prove It All Night at this point was the latest single, and not the iconic concert staple it becomes years later. For Bruce, you have to do Rosalita Come Out Tonight (from really any concert), Ramrod (from Barcelona 2002), Mary’s Place (from Barcelona 2002), Waiting On a Sunny Day (from really any concert), Sherry Darling (from the No Nukes Concert), New York City Serenade (from Rome 2013), Born in the U.S.A. (From Madison Square Garden 2000), (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher (From the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame 25th anniversary), and Kitty's Back (From Perth 2014). All amazing!

The first time I ever heard the piano and guitar intro to Prove it All Night was when I attended the show at the Omaha Music Hall in June 1978. The "Darkness" album had been released maybe two weeks prior. So, all the songs were relatively new and with the intros to the songs they all were unrecognizable from the studio recording. While I was looking and listening to the band play the intro with the piano softly playing I was astounded! I was expecting the band to be playing hard and driving rock music and they were playing so low-key. And like David I thought it was an instrumental. The song took on a whole different aspect when out of the blue Bruce began playing a guitar solo that tore the intro apart! You had to be there in 1978 to understand that this arrangement was "The BOMB!"

I love the '78 intro as do most long-time fans, but this performance isn't the best one, but it was filmed. Unfortunately too few performances were filmed back then. I would love to see Winterland! But within the whole show, this really works. In later years he went with it much shorter version more like the album. But it always lacked the same spark it did back in '78.

As a maniac Bruce fan, I have listened to many versions of this song from the 78 tour. I guess I understand how David feels as he is an actual musician. However, for us long time Bruce fans, the 78 intro version of this song is many of our favorites of his live songs. “Let me tell you why”. In my opinion Bruce is an underrated guitar player, who rarely plays extended solos or gives them to nils or Steve. I feel that the tone and style Bruce played this intro with is likely his best guitar work, along with the intro solo and solo from “because the night” 78. He has played great solos since, but never with this tone and intensity. In addition, of every one I have heard, it’s a jam; he plays it differently every time with winter land clearly being the best version I have ever heard him play. This from a fan who has seen him live over 100 times since 1985. For me, I’ll live with the length of the intro to hear him and Roy kick ass like that!

This song is my favorite Bruce song from the Darkness album. Honestly, it was not a good choice to have this particular live show as the first listen since this has the full piano and guitar solo, which was only performed a handful of times. The studio version is only about 3-4 minutes long and this performance was closer to 10 minutes long. Also, what makes this intro special is that they basically only did it during the Darkness tour and dropped it afterward. For me personally, I like this version a lot since it really showcases Roy’s chops on the piano and the guitar solo from Bruce on this one was also one of the cleaner ones from this era. I would personally listen to the live performance from Phoenix, AZ in 1978 to hear the song without the piano solo in the beginning with a runtime of about 7 minutes. Thank you so much for doing this review and keep up the great work.

This intro is the best thing Bruce has ever done. I actually think your reaction is because you dont know the song (also it was too dark, you cant see Bruce playing), the buildup and teasing and soloing around the melody…creates a great tension. Now, this is fine, but this was not Bruce’s best soloing on that tour. Anyway….too bad. The Winterland version is a staple of my music for 46 years.

and the accordion. Charlie Giordano slid into that role from the Sessions Band when Danny got too sick to continue playing in 2008. Charlie previously played with Hall and Oates, Bat Benetar and Joe Cocker. He and Soozie Tyrell (Violin) are the only two musicians, other than Bruce obviously to play in both ESB and the Session Band.

I may go against a lot of Springsteen fans in this, but I've always liked more the version with no intro instrumental (years 2000-2009 expecially). The song itself has an explosive intro (yes, the whole first half is not the "real" song) and it has not the same effect with that long instrumental before.

I like your deconstruction of the song but I still love it. I agree with you but in the end I still love this live version. Also, people don't give Bruce the credit for lead guitarist, vocalist and piano player. He didn't play piano on this song but he's amazing on the piano. You never even talked about, Little Steven, or Nils Lofgren. Two of the best guitarist on the planet.

I haven't timed it but the Passaic NJ version on YT feels like a shorter intro. Maybe I'm wrong. Passaic was in September. I wonder if this version was from earlier in the year and Bruce perhaps realized the intro should be shorter?

I'm with you 100% on this one. This is a "radio friendly, pop song" on what is otherwise a very dark and soulful album. Trust me, the studio version is the way to go on this song as it is short and sweet. The solos on the studio version are perfect with Clarence on sax & then Bruce on guitar.

I'd suggest you listen to the cut on the album Darkness on the Edge of Town where the public first heard it doesn't have this intro. This was to tease the crowd who knew it from the album and he was giving them extra that isn't on the album. The guitar solo is actually half in the middle and half at the end of the song on the album cut. Which is what you suggest. He adds it to the beginning here to add to the anticipation for fans who already know the song as it was first released.

His intro solo on virtually any other 78 recording is much better. The Passaic shows, the winterland shows, largo, the agora in Cleveland, Atlanta ect...I understand you want video when you do these reactions, but the great crime of Bruce's career is some his best performances were never filmed.

The intro is great. It's obviously not the album version (nor even the best live version) which doesn't have a long intro. He's also playing for fans that know these songs backwards and forwards, even in '78. Context matters. To say that the solo was "good" but then turn around and slam it is just weird. Enjoy most of your other reactions, though.
