Bruce wrote the music and the chorus but was having a hard time coming finishing the lyrics. He was recording his "Darkness on the Edge of Town" album (?) at the time, Patti Smith was in the same studio cutting an album. Springsteen's producer asked Bruce if he would consider letting Patti have the song, he did, she finished the lyrics with her husband in mind, recorded it, and it became a hit. Springsteen recently said that it needed a "woman's touch" and never would have become a hit if he had recorded it.

@@sedfierisentio Yeah, Patti and Bruce's versions have slightly different lyrics.

Solid entertaining reaction - have to admit am really surprised you never heard the song before, although the question "Was it a big hit?" is actually an interesting one. Bruce wrote the song back in the 70s and I think it is a staple of his live shows but I'm not sure if he ever actually recorded it himself. Instead he gave it to Patti Smith who had a big hit with it in 1978, probably her biggest hit and the song she is most famous for. In a weird, not what you would expect twist, 15 - 20 years later Natalie Merchant and 10,000 Maniacs did an acoustic cover of it that became a big hit for them in the 90s

It's a classic written by Bruce and Patti Smith for the Patti Smith Group album Easter in the 70s. It was a huge hit for Patti. (I like her vocal better)

I wish the requests presented older video. By 2012 the band played everything slower. Early shows we're more balls to the wall

Greetings again and as pointed out, one of Bruce’s few “collaboration” songs. “Roll of the Dice” with the “Professors” help is the only other that comes to mind. You are correct, this is a concert “standard” and it’s Nils song to shine. Early on, Nils use to have a trampoline onstage and would do these amazing aerial backflips while playing. Once he fell on his face, Bruce laughed and made him do it again. After a couple hip replacements, tramp gone, the solo, still rocks!! Rock on!!

For Bruce, you have to do Rosalita Come Out Tonight (from really any concert), Ramrod (from Barcelona 2002), Mary’s Place (from Barcelona 2002), Waiting On a Sunny Day (from really any concert), Sherry Darling (from the No Nukes Concert), New York City Serenade (from Rome 2013), Born in the U.S.A. (From Madison Square Garden 2000), (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher (From the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame 25th anniversary), and Kitty's Back (From Perth 2014). All amazing!

IMO Hammersmith 1975 is the best Rosalita out there... just a young band clearly hungry for it all

I think Nils, the guitar player with the solo, recorded a version of this too. Seems to me it had a different feel to it but I can't quite recall it otherwise. Maybe I'm wrong.

Not a bit hit for Bruce, but it was for Patti Smith in 1978. Bruce gave the incomplete song to Patti who finished it and had her only big hit in the charts.

As always - solid honest review- Thanks for the request JFK- so many options for review I was hoping for the Muchael Stipe guest artist version - little more relaxed and laid back - but my guess is would've scored .....7.9 Still hoping you'll request ESB and the Roots covering E st Shuffle
