This is uncut video of Bruce when he was in Youngstown for his "Ghost of Tom Joad" tour in January 1996. He's talking about our book, "Journey to Nowhere." He wrote an introduction to the reissue of that book, and to "Someplace Like America: Tales from the New Great Depression." This was the day after he performed. Bruce wanted to sneak with us into the ruins of the Jeanette ("Jenny" in his song) blast furnace that is in our book, which inspired him to write "Youngstown," with one of the lines in the lyrics being "my sweet Jenny, I'm going down." Michael S. Williamson and I told him that Cargill, which then owned the ruins, was arresting everyone caught, but that we could sneak in a back way. But we still might get arrested. "Let's go!" Bruce said. Amid this, a national TV crew was doing a story on us. Bruce's PR people told them "no way" that he'd do an interview. Bruce asked who the camera crew was. When he learned it was for the book, he acted surprised that the PR people said no. Of course he'd talk, he told us. This is that uncut interview. At the end, Michael comes into frame and tells the producer, "We're going to go do our little thing at the factory." That story is told in full in Someplace Like America, info on this Facebook page: / someplacelikeamerica Short version: We waded through deep snow and spent over an hour in the ruins talking about life and politics. Oh--in the background you can see Labor Studies Prof. John Russo (our hero!) in the purple scarf, and Terry Magovern, Bruce's wonderful and sweet ace go-to man. Terry has white hair and is in a black coat. He passed away some years back and we still miss him. Near the end I come into frame(wearing a brown newsboy hat) and talk with Terry--about the plan for sneaking into the mill.

Wow, very cool, you guys must have been stoked to have him talk about how your book inspired him so much. I want to get a copy now. How is it possible that this video has been sitting in YT world for 5 years barely noticed?!
