Hi Bruce - Greetings from Idaho! I do not want to seem presumptuous. I have a Honda HRR216 and had a problem with surging, it would run with the choke on. I am a retired US Navy Machinist’s Mate, in civilian terms, a Marine Mechanic. I pulled the carb from my mower and cleaned it thoroughly (so I thought). Replaced the carb and the surging was not fixed!! This carb has an idle mix that would adjust only 1/4 turn. So I took a chance and removed the restriction so the idle mix could be removed for cleaning. I found a tiny blade of grass under the needle!! I also cleaned out the low speed jet with a bristle from a wire brush. Carb cleaner and compressed air were also used. For this to be effective the emulsion tube was removed. When the carb was reinstalled this time, all the run problems were gone. It starts on one pull and idles, the surging is gone. I offer this lengthy explanation for your perusal and possible use. I really like your videos and have learned much. Best Regards😀!

Bruce: Another interesting video. It looks like we have the same " Senior moments " when working on things. You said that you were a electronic tech, l was a X-Ray service engineer for about 30 years and see the same attention to details that l have developed over a career, watching X-Ray tech's and doctors tear up what takes hours to fix. Good job! P.S. A lot of horizontal cylinder engines smoke on start up because the oil laying in cylinder seeps around the rings. When assembling a new engine you try to stagger the rings so that there is not a ring gap at the bottom of the cylinder. As the engine ages the rings walk around the piston and some times the ring gaps wind up at the bottom. Watch starting a radial aircraft engine they usually smoke for a few seconds on start up. Tom from WY

I've run three of these commercially and that particular Honda engine suffers with start up smoke, sometimes really bad but always clears and probably valve guides. All that said they will go on running as long as you feed them oil. As a mower they are fantastic machines with good wet cutting abilities which is why commercially used.
