I review the Tag Heuer Monaco with the new OEM bracelet and the in-house Heuer 02 movement. What do you think? Excellent modern improvements? Or has it become a little too contemporary and has lost a little of the retro charm? Sound off with your takes.

I don’t care where the crown is placed, nor do I care that it have the 3rd register. I LOVE the column wheel, vertical clutch movement and overall design of the Monaco. This one gets a thumbs up. I would never buy the modular version, but this has me contemplating.

No one can deny this has buckets of character...if we consider that so many collections look quite similar there’s no doubt that this would shake things up ..

Great review, Bruce, thank you. I'm warming up to the Monaco. Love the bracelet. Yeah, the sub-seconds isn't traditional, but I have to have one. If nothing else, it's a good way to make sure the watch is working.

This is fabulous. Everything about this watch is perfect. But I also prefer TAG Heuer to coming up with a classic blue dial 69 version with steel bracelet. That will be undoubtedly the best in the lot.

I honestly love the running seconds "crosshair" at 6 o'clock. The bicompax design is understated, but you still get a subtle visual signal of the seconds. It's a really clever solution to echo the original design. Personally, I don't have strong feelings on which side the crown lives.

It's DEFINITELY still a Monaco, that square chronograph is unmistakable. I think it's amazing to modernize classic watches, that's what Rolex AP and PP do. Great watch, great review!

That looks like a monster. I’ve got an 8 1/2” wrist and that looks BIG, especially thick! Also, I’m begging you to try the Tudor heritage Monaco before you commit to the Heuer. It wares like a dream, totally has that cool retro look, just a favorite retro chrono

Great Video. I added the Heuer Monaco Calbrie 11 blue dail leather strap 1969 to my Patek Philippe Nautilus, Rolex Submariner, Omega Moonwatch l love the button on the left it's different no other brand has such a iconic look and the blue vintage looking dail is striking it's a must have in any watch Collection.

Was lucky enough to pick up a caliber 11 special edition blue with white racing stripes. 1 of 1 presented to John Lingenfelter upon breaking the land speed record. Complete with special presentation box and plaque. Love it and will never leave my collection!

By far the coolest clasp I've ever seen - very ingenious. However, do prefer the look of the Calibre 11 with crown on the left and only "Monaco Heuer" on the dial.

Once they combine that with the new movement they'll be onto a winner! The current modular chrono really doesn't cut it for the price.

I personally don’t think it’s too contemporary. It seems TH have taken design cues from the Monaco 1533, so for me they fit within the range perfectly. I love these modern interpretations, I think they’re cult classics, the success of the CS2110 and CW2113 relaunched the Monaco in the modern era.

Not really a fan of the Monaco, but that actually does look good and a bit different from all the same clone watches out there. Great job Bruce, variety is the spice of life.

I tried on a caliber 12 once at an AD. It wasn’t for me at the time, even though I liked the looks , but just found it to be a too chunky. Since then, I’ve moved on to wearing Panerai so I’d like to try one on again. If I ever got one, it’d have to be the caliber 11 though.

The Monaco is a classic design. I’ve owned 4 rare early Heuer Autavias from 1969-72 but never had a Monaco, vintage nor modern. I’ve just bought one from an AD with the petrol blue dial and pick it up next week. I think if your hobbies are cars/racing first and watches second, the Monaco series will appeal to you more than if watches are your primary hobby and you’re uninterested in racing history or cars. I’ve been collecting watches for 30 years, but cars always come first, so my watches tend to have racing pedigrees. I also own a panda 116500 Daytona and buying a high-end TAG Heuer is a very good way to cultivate a relationship with an AD that also sells Rolex or PP BTW, it does absolutely help raise you up the non-existent list.

Look at the new model's center chronograph hand, which now goes beyond the outer scale. This is a big improvement as a "real chronograph" compared to the previous model on which that hand falls short of 1/4 sec outer scale. Even only for this reason, I would choose the new version.

I think one of the hallmarks of a classic Monaco is the opposite crown. To me not having that makes this feels like a faux Monaco, though I have to say the in-house 02 movement is a real step forward.

I'm no fan of Tag and feel this one doesn't sit well on the wrist because of that 15mm height and 22mm lug width but Tag fans seem as passionate as Panerai Paneristi when it comes to the brand. They're fortunate to have such a loyal following

Personally, I think the left crown of the classic Monaco calibre 11 really “balances” the design. It creates an equilibrium with the 2 pushers. I own the calibre 11 and for me, it was a decisive factor over the other variants. The bracelet looks good but it lacks micro-adjustments, it’s almost always the case with the butterfly clasp unfortunately. The supplied leather strap is very nice and has a fully adjustable deployant clasp. I would love to be able to swap it with a bracelet from time to time but I will wait for something that can be adjusted on the fly.

Crown on the left, running seconds on the right sub dial, lose the 12 hour timer and keep the new movement. Classic on the outside, modern on the inside. Also toss in a nice leather strap. Done deal.

i bought a lorus homage of this exact version. although it doesnt match the specs nor is it a mechanical movement, it still gives me the monaco vibes ive seen the watch at my local ad for over a year and the square case was striking so i was skeptical if i can pull it off. as soon as i bought it i must say its fun to wear even if its a chonky timepiece. would i spend close to seven grand on the real thing? probably not, but thats why homages are made so one can live in a fantasy world and pretend:)

Amazing luxury watch, top quality build. I can only imagine how difficult it is to create a Sapphire Crystal with that curvature, certainly more complex than a standard cut. I do love the Cal 12 version, love the Gulf version too, just class, statement piece 👍

It’s a Monaco, a modern interpretation. If I was in the market for a Monaco I would want the classic blue face with the crown on the left side and a black leather strap.

Looks like the dots at 12 o'clock are not lined up. It's a chunky boy. Butterfly clasp? Forget it. Can't get a good fit.

Love the Monaco (esp. the Cal. 11), but the bracelet just makes it too blingy. It's already an awesomely gawdy watch. That polished bracelet just puts it over the top, and is a bit too much. The Cal. 11 has it just right, with the Heuer branding, left side crown, and racing strap. The only thing this watch has over it is longer power reserve.

I'm of a different opinion than most about the bracelet. I like this watch better on leather. I like the design of the bracelet but not on this watch. I feel it takes away from the beauty of the case, almost upstaging it. I own a Monaco Calibre 12 with a leather strap so my opinion is based on wearing the watch, not just looking at it online. Plenty will disagree with me.

Looks too comedy big, too cartoonish & too attention seeking. Make it smaller and it would look so much more classy and sophisticated. As it is it looks silly imho. Love the bracelet tho. Cheers mate 👍🏻
