A nice slice of humble pit was delivered during this video when Nate had a brutal rc helicopter crash with the Blade 230 S Smart RTF rc heli. He was progressing so well with his rolls out of safe, and then out of no where he hit the ground. He was so bummed, but its part of the hobby. Progress was made and we cannot wait to see him behind the sticks of another RC heli soon.

@@TheRcSaylors you lost orientation. You went into safe or self level? Safe AKA rescue should of made the heli go positive pitch and give you time to think and not need to touch the collective.

You should have SAFE and also the “Oh Crap” recovery button. It’s setup like the original Apprentice, it’s usually the button on the top left side of the transmitter. Hitting the button should self-level the aircraft and apply a bit of elevation.

Tis the way of RC Heli's. This is why, whenever I need to practice something, I power through the crashing phase with an XK K110. Well, at least you have something etched in your mind that will move you to check the battery a little sooner in the future. That's a good thing.

I have been learning to fly RC helicopters over the last two years. The Blade 230S is a great little helicopter to learn all of the orientations. Learning to fly RC helicopters is all about getting a lot of stick time in different orientations. It looks like you are having fun and I hope you keep at it. It is so rewarding each time you master a new orientation or maneuver! Thanks for sharing your videos and keep them coming!

Two small tips from someone in exactly that position a couple of years ago.. 1. A decent sim will save you a lot of money…I didn’t use one I went the hard route too…but if you don’t put the hours in on the sim you gotta accept the crashes when you step out of your comfort zone…and they will be frequent. 2. I’ve mentioned it on another video but if you can find yourself some long grass to fly over (I mean knee high or above) you’ll also save yourself a lot of money.. RC helis are the ultimate challenge in RC…In terms of co-ordination they are one of the hardest things you can do full-stop. Great job on the loops tho…takes a lot of people a long time to get as far as that !! 👍😊

@gtm624
@gtm624 2 жыл бұрын
@@rayduffield749 is that your motto? Lol because I could swear it was someone on this channel that said it to me. And it stuck. I had already done most of my training the expensive way. Lol. But once I bought real flight and spent a little time flying helis in sim it was an instant transition. I was still using safe as a bail out in the beginning. But the sim really helped me hone in on the skills. I’m not perfect or some crazy 3d pilot. But I can fly any pattern and all over without needing safe and some light aerobatics. I understand everyone is different. Some may be as good as me in half the time it took me or some may take double the amount of time as me. But the sim is a great tool and it works. I also used it to learn how to fly inverted on rc planes. I did it so many times in the sim when I got to the field it was a natural thing and didn’t think about it I just did it. Since I had done it so many times in the sim. With the same transmitter of course which helps.

Turning it side on for the camera was a bad idea, orientation is always one of the most tricky parts to heli flying until you are really good. I can fly an rc helicopter about without crashing, but still have not attempted a roll or flip on my IC couple (old Raptor 50 and a T-Rex 600 FBL), although I have done them on electric (sometimes you get away with it, but it doesn't look that bad at all, nice). Love your vids! I haven't tried on the IC ones because they are big and scary, lol and bigger flies better but crashes harder 🙂 Also I don't think you got it to full safe mode, maybe the setting below that and also maybe battery, hard to tell. Good stuff, rebuild and try again!
@Bill14886
@Bill14886 2 жыл бұрын
Nate , replace or at least check your feather shaft . They always bend when you have a blade strike even if you didn't brake your main blades. Main shaft is probably bent as well as gears stripped. ⚙️ time to do a full rebuild. Just a note. The bigger they are the easier they are to fly. Just cost more to repair. A 500 or 600 will seem insane but it will fly soooo smooth and solid. Good luck.

You should probably try to use Rescue instead of flipping it back to SAFE mode. My very first attempt at flying inverted was on the first version of this heli and it saved my heli and made me come back for more. I have really good memories of this heli and always think I should buy another one just so if I go to a demo at a school or for the boy scouts or something to just show what a small, affordable, complete first time helicopter looks like.
@danfalbo
@danfalbo 2 жыл бұрын
I have the 230SV2, just not the smart version like your new one. I'm pretty sure your crash wasn't a battery failure, I'm guessing when you flipped back to "Safe" you actually put the switch in the middle position and not all the way down to full safe. The middle position if for stunts, but, at a lower head speed and slightly more docile. I've made bigger mistakes while losing orientation, and at lower altitudes, but, safe took over and saved my 230s just fine every time. You had plenty of altitude and battery for the save, also, that particular maneuver was not very aggressive, it was well within safe-modes ability. I could see by how the heli slide out of the sky that it wasn't in safe mode. Anyway, as always, excellent video, y'all give such good information in such a nice way. I just made a move up to the Blade Fusion 360 Smart, the maiden flights will be later today. I'll still be flying the 230s, it's an amazing helicopter. Oh, did you make it to the Joe Nall Fly-in ?

I reckon SAFE had gone out of calibration during the earlier part of the flight whilst you were in unstabilised mode. In SAFE, mine starts to drift until I run out of cyclic movement to correct it whereupon it drifts away out of control and crashes. It seems to be a common problem which is not recognised by everyone, who assume it is their fault. I think this is what happened to you.
@nathans.8063

The more I read, the more it seems other people are having the issue. Mine had a pretty bad crash yesterday, second day of ownership. I’ve contacted horizon, I believe the crash was due to a defect in which the calibration gets extremely off kilter when you switch in to stability mode from another mode. Hoping they acknowledge it, as it seems the issue has been going on for years.

@@TheRcSaylors lol,one of the first things I learned.when they go down under power, it will strip main gears,and usually causes the blades to strike the boom.check your main shaft and blade grip spindle also.

Nate, parts and rebuild are easy. There is a dude "Gods Country Archery" has an awesome set-up video for the 230S Smart. I used his video for all the mechanical stuff. Also, the RTF is ok for this bird, but get Dx6e or better for the forward programming and custom stuff. But you already knew this...lol.

Also, after rebuild and mechanical setup (also do the calibration reset for the gyro), practice hovering in Agility mode. Reason might seem backwards, but if you have it mechanically perfect, it will hover damn near perfect. Then do the trims flights in stability. Seems backwards, but it solved 92% of my problems with the 230s Smart.

Your battery didn't die... When you switch back to safe , all the trims are WAYY off. You CAN NOT switch between modes while mid maneuver. Regardless of what spectrum/eflight says. Also the save (bind) button RTF no work like the Chinese ones. I have this exact heli and it's updated and a bought the tool to update the controller and esc/receiver thing. And no matter what you switch mid manuve be prepared to fight trim and try to switch out and back when it's slightly more level OR if trim to far out and it's doing what it did to you. JUST HIT THE KILL then collective. If the motor can slow enough before hitting the ground the damage will be minimal ( the finger things on the rotor head ) Fun ( positive ) fact. They will still fly with a bent tail AND will fly well in wind In Safe mode, It's impressive Also the smaller ones are better. The really small older one is Amazing. But buy a backup control board, and like 2 tail booms :-) :-)

my question to you is why do you think it did not level itself with safe engaged?… From what I could tell you had already engaged safe stabilization for leveling well before it crashed… You can see the helicopter was close to being level and then did a left bank and that it should not have done in safe… So what do you think happened ?… PS your videos are cool and one last thing I do not believe this was a battery issue. So why did not stabilize in safe mode…?

I was wondering the same thing, it looks like it may have thought it was level but in reality it was banking hard left and slightly backwards. Maybe it wasn't calibrated on level ground?

that definitely did not look like a battery issue. First off so much for safe technology . Simply lost orientation and wasted a valuable second or even two thinking safe mode might help. Should have just stayed on the sticks you may have gotten out of it. Anyway as usual great video I hope you fix it and see you back in the air

For all you guys that want helicopter contact, my channel is 99% helicopters and minimum two videos a week. Now Nate, I highly highly highly recommend you learn the boring orientation, practice your nose and hover left and right over tailing over once you can do that perfectly and I mean perfectly practice forward flight back-and-forth circuits left and right. It takes months to master a helicopter just to fly upright normal. It is boring and it takes a while but it makes you 100 times better pilot. Helicopters are the hardest part of this hobby and not for everyone but more rewarding. Now I highly recommend that you check and replace the main shaft and feathering shaft on that 230, I will guarantee you one if not both are bent.
@Adamhc75
@Adamhc75 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with checking the main and feathering shaft. If either one is bent the chopper will definitely "sound funny" and you will also notice odd flight characteristics almost right away. Also you may be able to straighten the tail boom. Both my 230s (gen 1 and gen 2) have tail booms that were bent at one point in time. All in all the 230 is a solid and easy to fly bird. Best of luck and enjoy.

@@Adamhc75 A bent feathering shaft and or mainshaft will create vibrations which will cause the “odd flight characteristics” and funny sound. You can always check a feathering shaft on the bench just by inserting a 1.5 mm driver into one end and turning. You will see right away with the other blade grip bouncing up and down as you rotate the shaft. Yeah you can bend the boom back. They are super soft booms. I did a full MicroHeli 230 three blade build on mine and ditch the stock 636 and put a Brain 2 with blue tooth as well as MicroHeli servos and blade 300x motor. Only thing that’s stock 230 is ESC And tail motor. I’ve got quite a few videos of it on my channel.
