Old (ship) pilot's proverb "A ship in the harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for". Can we level set: this is RC, and it is a hobby, not life or death. Of the 100s or 1000s of successful flights he enjoyed to gain those skills, you only saw the one that did not end so well. The joy of flying (RC!) as you see fit carries risk, and sometimes it catches up to you. Nothing time and money can't fix.

In my humble opinion, that guy was completely in the groove and nailing it, especially flying a scale craft, when I clicked I did not expect that level of flying! Up to 0:35 is what I expected. And then it got interesting! It is completely worth the risk (again in my opinion) as when you are in the groove, "oh my god I am too low' or any such nonsense is the last thing you are thinking, by definition. But sh*t can happen, and he looks like he is taking it well, what else can you do. I have lost my fair share, and it is not the cost that hurts, but the hours of effort building and learning to master that can leave the biggest dent. Depending how you view it. My view is this is a part of the hobby, go out and have fun and don't treat these machines as treasures but as tools to achieve a mental experience that is hard to match, legally at least.

it's not nearly as bad as it looks. + - $1200 ought to have it ready to crash again in no time lol. Seriously, though it's been several years since I built / flew model planes and ARF helis, I can very much appreciate the funds, skill and time that was obviously invested to produce such a magnificent scale model. I have no idea if this was scratch built including custom vacuum forming polymer material, or hand fiberglassed or even if the fuselage shell were manufactured, and I could be wrong but I do not believe this craft was purchased in any pre-built stage and for the uninitiated, unless I am sorely mistaken, that helicopter does not exist but for the sweat, tears and craftsmanship of someone with a passion and ability to create it. As for anyone taking jabs against the pilots ability, I feel certain that if you possessed the ability to even hover this bird a foot above the ground for 5 seconds with any result other than complete destruction, then you would understand how idiotic such statements are. When I flew rc planes and later developed an interest in the helicopters, I flew only a simulator for more than 6 months before even purchasing a heli and tho I had developed the automatic muscle memory that is required for an intermediate level of control, as the simulator I used it turned out was surprisingly realistic and as the skill developed I could increase the rate x 1-1/2 to improve reflex, when the time came for my 1st "real" flight, I was nearly vibrating with nerves in fear of the slight mishap that could damage my new heli, even though that ship was in large part pre-assembled, only requiring I think the blades to be installed, balanced, and rx install ect and at +- $800 all in, which I'm certain is not a drop in the proverbial bucket compared to the investment someone made to create this model, and yet comfortable / confident enough to be doing some very nice scale flying. This guy was not flying outside of his ability at all, yes he made a nearly immeasurable error, one unforgiving of helis but every single person who has the skills to fly an rc heli that well has to be willing to make the occasional painful sacrifice to continue to improve. Cheers!

How much do you think it costs to build a helicopter like this, all said and done? Including transmitter, etc
@rogerbivins91446 жыл бұрын
Son of THE King Though I have built from scratch and kits more models than I can recall and still have 1/2 an attic full of various types of rc aircraft, it's been years since I have actively flown anything other than fpv quads and the heli you see in this video is quite on another level from any of the ARF glow engine helis I am familiar with. That said, I can can tell you that the turbine engines alone, I would estimate on the lower end of $1500- $2500 and I would have no problem believing the one in this heli if purchased new costing 2 - 3 times or more either of those figures and then the costs of high quality radio equipment with gyros, servos, on board electronics ect, on this type of heli I assure you is not at all an insignificant consideration to the overall costs. Aside from the costs of the many parts to develop a model like this, the investment that has to be made in building time might surprise most, as it is, for the builder / pilots anyway, generally a highly skilled labor of enjoyment because the only profit for the months and sometimes years of sweat, tears and effort is the self satisfaction of creating something more complicated and perfect than most folks will ever understand let alone truly appreciate. I guess I'm going around the world to say that although I couldn't know precisely how many dollars and cents have transferred hands by the time a ship like this lifts off on its 1st flight, and I suspect if like me and most I know, the owner doesn't know, or doesnt really want to know, but most guys taking on a project like this is done because it is actually a therapeutic process that can sometimes wipe a bad work week off the books by making just a couple more hours progress. I would only Hazzard an uneducated guess and say this bird could possibly require a monetary investment of as little as $3500 to over $10,000 and unless someone has begun mass producing them, a but load of personal time. If your thinking about one for yourself tho, be advised, this ain't the starting place. Get yourself a simulator and by the time you can fly the sim inverted and toward you, you will be ready to fly and will have saved the price of this heli in replacement parts. Good luck!

Son of THE King Man I wouldn't ever want to discourage good people from experiencing the model aircraft hobby at all. Airplanes commonly make up the larger percentage of model types at most clubs and are far more forgiving during the learning curve. Also buddy cords are more useful with planes in getting a new pilot comfortable in a hurry without as much oops risk but most clubs will have at least a few heli pilot members to share knowledge with you. Model helicopters are a lot of fun and its rewarding to develop the coordination to control them but they are not at all forgiving to error and piloting a true scale glow, gas, or turbine powered heli successfully requires constant automatic control to stay ahead of the heli. Beginning that journey to thoughtless control with a $200 or less simulator will reduce the learning time x 100's and when starting, and every 3-6 seconds you hit the reset button you will have saved at least the price of the broken rotor blades if not far worse. Generally speaking there is an across the board fellowship at flying clubs with no shortage of members willing and able to help new comers get a successful start. There are local clubs all over the country and more likely than not, you may have have one within driving distance. Attend a fly in or enjoy a visit one Saturday morning, it could change your life!

Personally, I feel it was a little bit irresponsible to fly a helicopter like that when other people are close by. It is my belief that small little structures, probably made of cinder block, about 4 feet high should be required to be behind the pilots area for people to have as a safe- Haven when watching these helicopters and other large/fast aircraft.

If you notice..he was flying in a pattern parallel to the crowd, and within the proper airspace as skilled pilots are trained to do. He was not flying negligently by RC standards and if somebody is worried for there safety then they need to move the selves further back or just not attend these events. There is a level of risk involved as soon as you leave the house. Be responsible for your own safety and don’t hate on others. Or just grow a pair.
