In Turkey, there are traditional baths called Hammam.
To put it in one word, it is brutal.
We went to a hammam in a city called Izmir the other day and got a massage there.
I’m going to show you what I went through. Enjoy!

I got a hammam massage 5 years ago. Knew nothing about it, but went for it. Don't eat beans prior going there. I remember I had to hold in some farts from the beans. So I did. However, I just didn't know that these guys slap you. So as he slapped me unexpectedly, I fucking ripped all those piled up farts out. It friggin echoed in the room. I signed up for a visit to local Hammam on my Turkey trip in 2017. I decided to skip massage at the last minute and went shopping instead. There was this cheesy guy from our tour group who was very eager for a sensual massage by women. Later he told us that its good we skipped the hammam. He was tossed around n slapped by big men. We all had a good laugh afterwards.

I've done this before too. The hamam I went to was really authentic. The materials used and especially the exfoliating glove which is called Kese was incredible. I am a retired seaman and I have been to Izmir a bunch of times, and when I sailed as AB, before I started sailing as Bosun, I could usually manage to get ashore. Train to I think Haydarpasa on the Asian side of the Bosporus, then a cheap ferry ride across and I could be in Istanbul for just a couple of bucks. I never worked up the courage to visit a bath, though. I wish now I had just went for it. Looks like they are experienced at working with inexperienced customers. I did enjoy having a nice narghile, or hookah, and the coffee, (hold the cardamon, please!) and the bazaars. I spent about 6 hours once thinking I was in the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul but then I discovered I was actually just in the Spice Bazaar, about 1/4 the size of the big one. And THAT one was immense! The people are really cool, too. Just don't be an asshole and they are very nice. Culturally, it is like a bridge. Is it Europe? Is it Asia? Is it Muslim? Is it secular? Well I have to say Turkey hits a very pragmatic balance, all the way around.

@@tomtas6999 The Turkish Language contains 104,481 words, which 5000 Words are from Arabic. Thats barely 5%. Those words are mostly words based on religion. So that is that. Arabic food? Yeah right.. you lost your mind and you have no clue what you are talking about. Turkish Culture is Anatolian + Turkic culture. Just like the food. Anatolians are not Arabs. I know you were bad in school and dont know shit, but are you so stupid that you cant even use the internet right to get informations? What does arabic worldview even mean wtf? We are neither in european union nor are we in arabic union. In fact, Turkey is in en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Organization_of_Turkic_States Now go back to school kid.

You know, that actually makes sense. If lots of body hair is common in Turkey, then sauna baths and hard scrubbing like this makes sense as a custom. I bet guys with body hair who get this come out with really soft and conditioned hair. 🤔

Same thing in Morocco but with 3 chambers, the warm one, the super hot one, and the one in between, people start with the very hot chamber normally for 5 minutes, then go to the middle one and stay there as much as they want, and spend from 5 to 10 minutes in the warm ones before going out, the body cools down gradually during that time, some people can't stand the heat and stay mainly in the first two chambers, personally I prefer to go in the super hot chamber and lay down on the hot ground on my back, and apply some of the semi liquid olive soap on my body, it's feels great especially during winter season.

@@NomadicWes try both types of hammam in Morocco, the ones in poor neighbourhoods and another one more expensive. If you go to Casablanca, there's a new hammam under the Hassan II Mosque ( it's just hammam, don't worry of you're not muslim, you can still go there and you can visit the mosque during visit hours).

Some historical background, this so called Turkish Hammam is actually Roman, and Byzantine style bathing. Most probably the Romans introduced it to Anatolia region before the Turk migration from Mongolia. The Hammam history goes as far as as Neolithic age. The women had their own hammam and men had their own. They ate lunch and it was a common place for socializing and relaxing with friends after taking bath. The place was made with marble. The sink was also made with marble and under the hammam floor was a furnace and wood or charcoal was used to warm the floor. This method caused the entire place to steam. They made a special black cloth to clean the body like luffa. I still have it as a souvenir. I remember when I was young my family built a private Hammam (old fashion washroom) in our villa. We called it a different name, and we also had a French style washroom. My great grandfather used to share with us many stories and funny incidents that took place in this public bathing. You could Search historical documents about this hammam subject.

The hammam exists in various arabic countries, it's not a turkish only thing. The omeyyade improved the roman thermes and many countries have their own variant. Morroco has both hammam ruins dating from the ommeyade conquests and thermes ruins from the romans. The modern version is quite different tho.

Romans,Turks and many nations lived together in a common geography for a long time. actually nowadays turkish, roman etc. There is no race left that we can separate. The grandfathers of many Turks are Romans, and many of the Romans have Turkish ancestors in the same way. This is valid for other societies that have lived together for many years. that is, in such cases, a cultural element does not belong to a specific community, but to a certain geography.

I had similar massages during my 5 years of weekend trips to Montreal, c Canada. I only noticed 2 differences. In Montreal, we went on male days and the massage and saunas were done nude by all customers. Also instead of slapping our backs we were struck with cedar branches. First few times I had small cuts all over my back. But it was very enjoyable once I got used to it. Hope you enjoyed yours as much as I did mine. Very interesting video. I subscribed. Thanks for sharing.
