Yes, it took a few months, but I really wanted to spend time with these pencils. I have used them in both portrait and regular coloring, and I have my layering, erasing, and blending tests ready for you to review.
Only you can decide if these are the right pencils for you, and more importantly, please remember that everyone's coloring style is different. I do hope you enjoy these pencils as much as I have.

Love the review! Totally agree with the Create Space paper. I was so frustrated because it kept looking like I had colored with crayon on that paper! But in Johanna Basford and other books with similar paper I really loved using these too. Definitely firmer feeling than Prisma but still blend able. In fact being newer to coloring I actually find these slightly easier to blend with because they aren't as soft. Being heavy handed and still learning, the lead in these kind of gives me a leg up on that 😉

Yes, they definitely will not snap or wear down as quickly on you as a prismacolor haha. They are a soft oil-based pencil, which is great. My only issue is hair. They definitely are not fun for hair haha. It can be done, just requires some sharpening!

Thank you for your review. I have now purchased two sets of the Brutfuner Squares. One to use and one to save for replacement pencils. I also find them creamy and love all of the colors. I only have a few of the Polychromos so when I want to do fine detail, I choose those. I purchased the 520 Brutfuner and have also enjoyed using them for more detail. I find them to be less creamy and a harder pencil. I plan to watch your review on those. Prismacolors are still my favorite with Polychromos for details, however, I wanted a few budget friendly pencils until I could expand to more expensive. Thanks again.
@ColorfullyOptimistic
@ColorfullyOptimistic 2 жыл бұрын
Yes the 520 are a different formula than the 120 for sure. The 120 are by far one of my favorite budget oil pencils, just because of how soft they are. Most oil pencils are hard, so these make it easier to learn for beginners before diving into polys

Thank you for testing these. A lot of “reviews” are really first impressions and that’s just frustrating. I actually ordered these twice because It had duplicate colors and messaging the seller was of no help so I exchanged them for for another set which surprisingly came undamaged. My first tin was definitely banged up though. I’m still working on my opinion on these but I used them on a Maria Trollle book and they worked nicely and I have to say this color range is pretty great in comparison to some other budget sets. I like the light blue and that one grayish purple. Overall I’m not disappointed.
@ColorfullyOptimistic

Oh no about the dups! I luckily didn't have any duplicates, but yes, that's the issue with these brands that are sold by a different party than the seller and white labeled. It made me hesitant to review these for awhile because honestly I worried these wouldn't even be here months later lol. I have messaged the seller myself with questions, such as core and barrel size with NO response, so I had to measure myself. That said, for as cheap as they are, I do like how they lay down and work in my coloring books. I mean that's a lot of pencil for so little money.

I have them and granted I’m a newbie and just learning but it seemed like they were really soft for oil. My understanding was that oils were usually a little harder than wax. I had to sharpen a lot it seemed but like I said I’m brand new and still learning so that may be user error. Also I tried them on an Amazon print book. I know now that was a MISTAKE they were really awful on that paper I thought.
@ColorfullyOptimistic
@ColorfullyOptimistic 3 жыл бұрын
So, yes, most oil-based pencils are harder than wax, but there are also some seriously hard wax-based ones out there too lol. It is all in how the manufacturer whips them up. These are predominantly oil, but may not be as much as say polys or SF pencils. Despite that, they are definitely oil just because you can tell from how they lay down, look and feel (wax react way differently on paper). It is actually nice to have a somewhat softer oil-based pencil because you almost get the best of both worlds having a softer lead of a wax, but the layering potential of an oil. I too had to sharpen a lot when trying to do finer details, such as hair, which is why I pointed that part out in my review because I did go through quite a bit of them to do that blue hair while my Polys would not have needed that.

I actually thought they were wax based. I pulled out my Prisma and swatched them side by side and couldn’t tell the difference. So I think if you run out of a shade it would be feasible to buy open stock from Prisma if available
@ColorfullyOptimistic
@ColorfullyOptimistic 2 жыл бұрын
So you should see the slight differences on paper of a wax predominant versus oil. Wax will have wax bloom and a sheen under the light from all that wax build up while oil you can actually see that oily texture to the color on the paper and there is no wax bloom. 🙃

I haven't done hair, so can't say anything on that point. I've just done Johanna Basford and Kerby Rosanes coloring with those, and I like them a lot . I always feel bad using expensive pencils in coloring book. So these are perfect. Of course I can't get as many layers as I would with polychromos, but I get smooth blending and color saturation wich is already enough for me to have a blast in coloring books and pretty outstanding if you consider the price.(I live in France, and here getting them on aliexpress is half the price Amazon ask for it, and for 3days shipping)

@ColorfullyOptimistic 3 жыл бұрын
Oh that's good you got the squares on Ali Express. Yeah for portraits, I just felt they didn't perform as well, but they are still a great pencil - just too soft for hair. For pencils, it depends on the book. But, I rarely use my Derwent Lightfast and Luminance pencils in a book - they are on portraits. That said, I use others in the books for sure.

My box arrived all dinged up. I had break issues with colours on that side of the tin. I thought they coloured like my Prisma. I thought the brutfuners were wax ! I checked the blurb and realised they are listed as oil.
@ColorfullyOptimistic
@ColorfullyOptimistic 2 жыл бұрын
I mean all pencils are a mix but yes they're predominantly oil. They do have a lot of fillers making them smooth which is nice but also takes away some of the benefits of an oil predominant pencil. I had the ding but my pencils weren't damaged so I'm sorry to hear that happened to you!

Helloo... I've been thinking of buying brutfuner. But still confuse which one i choose. Do you think the square one is softer than the other? Fist i prefered to buy the square one, but, it is difficult for me to read the colour name😊. I love the black baret, because the colours are written on the barrel, as well as the round barrel. Are those 3 kind have the same softness and colour range?

Great Video! I feel they are not really soft, the 520 are more softer, and they are not really special, only their square shape. Avarage colors, feel not really good. There are many other pencils which are better, I like the old round brutfuner/guang hui much better and I like the black round brutfuner, I think they feel unique, there is no other pencil which has this feeling when be used. But its always a difference according to the paper you use. Thats crazy:-D I think the 520 set feels like waxy pencils, is there a way to test, if the pencil has more wax or more oil in it? I remember color my world said in her video, that when you color with a wax based pencil and try to color over it with an oil based pencil, it won't work, because you won't see the color of the oil based pencil on top of the color of the wax based pencil. She did this in one of her videos. But can you ever be 100% sure?
@ColorfullyOptimistic
@ColorfullyOptimistic 3 жыл бұрын
These are definitely an oil pencil, but could have more wax. All pencils are oil and wax, but usually predominantly one more than the other. However, laying these down, and how they lay down, I can tell they are oil more than wax. As for the test, I'm not totally sure - I'd have to try. But, I use Derwent Lightfast and Luminance (one is oil, one is wax) layering on top of one another and they do fine, so not sure that test would be accurate - but again, haven't tried it myself. See, I find these softer than the 520, but I think coloring style also plays a role in what we all feel is soft versus hard and yes, paper definitely does determine a lot when it comes to how a pencil feels!
