I thought about breaking this one into multiple parts. The BM869s transient testing was going to be part of it but I knew it was going to be too long already. Glad you found it interesting enough to watch the whole thing. Good enough to pin it.

Great videos. Extremely informative. Thank you for your time that you put into these in depth reviews. Liked and Subscribed. I recently had my 20+ year old Fluke 87 completely die on me. Was researching what model to pick up as its replacement as I had heard many times to only get the Fluke 87V. After watching several of your videos it seems as though I am going to make the jump over to Brymen and pick up the 869S. Seems for the lesser cost and additional features than the Fluke along with it only a bit more than the 839 reviewed in this video it is well worth it.

I've owned my BM869s for a few years now and have been very happy with it for my electronics hobby. If you were considering buying an 87V, you may find the BM869s overkill for your application. It's more on par with the older Fluke 189. I borrowed a Fluke 289 from a friend of mine when I was thinking about buying one. It's alright and has the basic features but the font size, boot times and slow graphing kept me from pulling the trigger on it. Read the manuals before you buy. Good luck with what ever you end up with.
@FENATECH
@FENATECH 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the heads up on the overkill. I have trusted my Fluke 87 for many years (more than I probably should have) and grew very reliant on it. My college EET professor had highly recommended it and at the time I did not think twice about it not to mention that there was also not much to compare it to unlike today. I am a systems integrator/electrician and therefore work with both Line and Low Voltage. I need to pick up a replacement DMM that will fit both venues. Prior to coming across your channel and videos I had seen many comments on the Brymen 257S and have read that it is also a very popular model. Have you reviewed this meter at all? Seems that many people comment on KZfaq and on the EEV Blog about Greenlee being the US equivalent version of the Brymen meters. Have you heard or found that to be the case anyway?
@joesmith-je3tq
@joesmith-je3tq 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, Greenlee does rebrand Brymen meters. They offer a green colored version of the BM869s. I wrote them and asked if they did anything beyond change the color of the case and they did not respond. If they can't answer a simple question, they add no value. So, I went to the source. Brymen on the other hand have been very responsive. More so than any of the other companies I have contacted. You will find a spreadsheet containing the data for every meter I have tested to date in the the description.

28:38 did you see how the 839 was reading 60hz as soon as you plugged it in before you turned the power on to the supply? Almost like it was picking up a mains noise from somewhere. That would explain the double frequency reading maybe.

Same when I turned it off as things are floating and it will autorange down. Could you explain how it would explain the double frequency? I've not looked into it at all beyond what I showed.

my bm829 was around $150 and what I like about that is the dual temperature functionality. I dont need all the other features of the bm869 so I went with the cheaper option. This seems like a good meter also. I like the form factor of these meters. Easy to read and hold up to abuse!

Over the past month I have bought two Brymen meters. A BM257s that now lives at work, and my new BM829s for home. I do some more advanced troubleshooting and having the dual temperature probe option was a deciding factor for me too. $163 including shipping from TME. Both are very solid and work well.

i have had someone i worked with in the past make that claim when explaining why he replaces his batteries every month on his fluke 87, i know for a fact that a fluke and its bandgap reference won't do that, but i have used a mastech that glitches out when the battery gets low, seamingly fine readings but it glitches on the display and range switching (not displaying a decimal point, trying to show AC volts in ohm range exc) but thats well into the warning indicator

I would expect Dave's fans will create a fair market for the new UEI meter. I did not sign up for the first 50 or the kickstart because there was little information about the state of the meter. Based on what I saw, I assumed there would be problems (which backer's are starting to find) and I did not want there to be any excuse how it was still a sort of new kickstart meter so people expect there to be problems. It takes too much time to run a meter. I have viewed UEI as a cheap brand to begin with. From one of Dave's posts, it sounds like they discontinued most of their products. That to me is a red flag. If they get to the point where backers are happy with the product and UEI starts to sell it through normal channels, I may pick one up. I want it to be their BEST effort before I put another through any tests.

Yeah I have never been too impressed by UEI meters and they did have many issues with their meters. I have been wanting a new meter,,(like I really need a new one) and was waiting on Dave's but when I heard him say it was made by UEI I had to step back and wait to see how it goes. I do hope that with Dave's input they will make a good product,,,, just wish it was a Brymen. But no worries I have faith in Dave!! And thanks again for your hard work on your channel Joe,, there're many of us that really enjoy your work!!

Seems like it would depend on the equipment. Guessing the manufacture has their own tools and they may not be available to the general public. I would check with your dealership and see what they have to say. Personally, for my basic automotive electrical work, it really doesn't matter much. I looked at a few automotive specific meters and showed my old Fluke 97 scope meter. You could have a look at those videos and see if anything sparks your interests.

Thanks and I'm glad you are enjoying them. Beyond the lag you mentioned, I guess a few people are now having problems with the selector switch, logging to the still card seems problematic and it looks like the AC power measurement is still crippled. For a released product with the EEVBLOG endorsement I expected it to be a very high quality product. Should be entertaining to see how it all plays out.

After enjoying many of your very thorough test, review repair and redesign videos, it would be interesting to see what your own idea of an accurate and robust meter design might be-lol. It would have to cost a kings ransom in high end parts and design work but on its public promo debut would probably survive a 20,000 volt hit right before being dropped off a two story roof onto concrete then bouncing into a river, traveling out to the ocean where its caught in a ships propeller and thrown back on shore only to be run over by a truck that has a gas leak catching the meter on fire triggering the onboard extinguisher system you designed purely as an afterthought one night in your sleep. The meter survives in perfect working order not even requiring recalibration. It would be the best product test video since the old Timex watch and Marantz stereo commercials - you become obscenely rich as the owner of the worlds most expensive, accurate and indestructible test equipment company after which you retire and celebrate by buying the island chain of your choice -- hey it could happen-!-LOL
@joesmith-je3tq
@joesmith-je3tq 5 жыл бұрын
I have pointed it out several times. My current choice is the Brymen BM869s. I have yet to see a meter I like more than this one. I've also stated I like the Fluke 189 which is no longer offered. I've also stated when I started these tests that I never paid more than $50 USD for a handheld. Obviously no longer true but I am using these better class of meters for a portable bench meter. In the garage, I am still using a cheap meter. Nothing new. There are several good meters out there today depending on your requirements. I wouldn't have much of a reason to design another one.
@yambo59
@yambo59 5 жыл бұрын
lol - Hey I was just havin a laugh and it was also a compliment of sorts, of course youre not going to design and build a meter - especially as you say with the Brymens that are available. I have to agree though, I dont have a brymen but I did find a nice little brand new Greenlee 210A for about half price online which is a rebranded Brymen (not sure which Brymen model its equivilant to) and I have to say im very impressed with it after using it and taking a look inside. Very high build quality looking just like the Brymens you take apart with the mezanine board excellent input protection etc. and to me Brymen/Greenlee offers the same quality and more value per dollar than most Flukes, especially after seeing that 87-V die so early in transient testing. After seeing you use and examine the 869S its really feature rich and the price you paid is really about the best value overall regarding features and build quality. @@joesmith-je3tq

I make a whole series of videos on the 87V. You should have a look at the last part where the meter you mention was retested. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fc6jn8R9sLXUe3k.html So far, about the only brands that have done well in my testing are Brymen, Fluke and HIOKI. The Gossen could have been a really nice meter had it not been engineered by marketing. Your little Brymen should serve you well for many years assuming you don't abuse it. Then again, you see what sort of tests I run. People like cheap disposable meters, myself included. I had a BK and Mastech that the rotary switches went bad on. I just had one of the UNI-T clamp meter's switches recently fail as well. Made it about a year of moderate service. $30, I wasn't expecting much out of it. I was playing around with an ADC that I plan to use to automate some tests. You can see a bit of it here: www.eevblog.com/forum/testgear/playing-with-delta-sigma-converter-poor-mans-meter/

You mentioned not having found a distributor to get a price. In Germany we fortunately got one and he is selling the BM839 for 179 EUR (today 219 US$) including taxes and shipment in Germany www.welectron.com/Brymen-BM839-Multimeter . For comparison the BM869S is 219 EUR (268 US$) www.welectron.com/Brymen-BM869s-Multimeter (cheaper than TME). So the BM839 is 82% of the BM869S. So for me it is a clear decision to the 869. For me the AC + DC modes are very useful and not so common at other meters. I also appreciate that I can measure µC's quiescent current of some µA but also the working current of several 10mA without getting a too big voltage drop leading to a reset during the transition. But nevertheless the burden voltage of the BM869 is still a little bit high for these applications.

It may not be what you or I are used to seeing, but it might be the norm for that country with this kind of color anime like packaging, bright colors, and flashy lights. It’s a difference in marketing that the data from that region shows works, but may not be the best option for other regions or what gets people’s attention in other markets when they label something professional. Then again, I’ve see a lot of things on eBay called professional that are a safety hazard and complete joke. That the only possibility I could come up with.
