That's my favourite interpretation of Figaro on KZfaq! His italian is so good, that you hardly notice it's not his mother language! Bravo!

I love his flamboyant character. He truly loves what he does and does what he loves. There's not a shadow of doubt as to where Bryn Terfel's passion lies .... music and opera.

To truly understand opera, one has to realize that this was the movies, radio, and rock concert all in one back then. And it was certainly entertaining.

This is my favourite performance in the You Tube. Not only Bryn is excellent, but the other two singers play her role very good as well. Cecilia and Katleen Battle are that singers who are same good actresses on the stage! Cecilia was good in the finale of the II.part on the You Tube.

Bryn Terfel is amazing! Not only is his voice good, but he acts well, too. Can someone please tell me where I can find the DVD of this performance? I think this is the 1998 Metropolitan Opera production of Figaro, conducted by James Levine. I tried to get the DVD on Amazon and eBay but I can't find it. Maybe there is no DVD? That would be strange, since this is a well done performance including a famous cast (Terfel, Bartoli, Levine ) Please message me or reply so that I can buy the DVD. Thanks!

I never get tired of this fabulous "insult aria" "Say goodbye for little butterfly to pleasures" or as in a new translation in 1974 "It's over, little slob, with smiles, With little secret games and entertainment. It's out of your hunting for girls, Say goodbye, little dandy and disappear! It is an end to your hunt for girls, Say goodbye, little dandy, and get lost Lay off that navy suit, Say goodbye for the nice perfume. Now switch silk and velvet against military service.
@SilverWiskeyStones14 жыл бұрын
The text of the aria is about Figaro telling Cherubino how military life is, and also poking fun of his want to join. The aggression fits well, its impressive his tone does not waiver throughout. But I agree poor little Cherubino :-)

Mitridate is six hours long when its ballet is included. My source is Grove's. I have listened to both of the modern video recordings neither of which includes the ballet and both of which often cut many of the da Capos.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't he off pitch in some parts? For example when he emphasizes certain words in sentences: "NON piu andrai", "QUEL cappello" "turbando il riPOSO", etc... It seems to me as if he's emphasizing them too much that it makes him sing them on a higher pitch. I'm new in opera so I'm just wondering. ~

Indeed, in Don Giovanni (Atto II, Scena 17: "Già la mensa è preparata"), musicians are supposed to play famous opera arias to entertain Don Giovanni while he's eating and waiting for il Commendatore. Thus Leporello starts singing ("Questa poi la conosco pur troppo...") on the same tune as Le nozze's "Non più andrai"! Le nozze had had such a great success the year before, Mozart knew (I guess!) people would recognize it and couldn't help but slip in a nod to it! :)

@Patrick Boyle: there's a duet (Se viver non degg'io) and an ensemble (at the very end) in Mitridate. But it's pretty much a Baroque opera, very different from Mozart's mature stuff. Still has some really neat arias (Mitridate's and Farnace's).

In fact there is a persistent rumor that Michael Jackson was in fact a castrati of sorts. The story is that he was given hormones to keep his voice from changing. Mozart's Mithradate Re di Ponto has a couple castrati parts but that was twenty years earlier than Figaro. Mithradate has essentially no low male voices, no duets, trios, or quartets and no choruses. It is a procession of tenor and soprano arias. It is also six hours long.

Don't get me wrong, I think this is a kickass, momentous performance.. but I don't know how I feel about how warm and touchy feely he gets with Cherubino.. most productions portray him being more mock-macho and playful with him.. although, I do like the dryness he's added to the character :)

@iso99539 жыл бұрын
Renji Mao The aria is in Italian. The subtitles are in Spanish. They are similar, but quite different from each other. Here is what he is singing: Non più andrai, farfallone amoroso, notte e giorno d'intorno girando; delle belle turbando il riposo Narcisetto, Adoncino d'amor.

A pants role like Cherubino is a young man. Composers did not want a full, mature, manly sound (like we hear with Bryn Terfel) so they wrote these parts for female singers with a bit of a darker sound--a mezzo soprano.
