His voice is like warm, dark honey. Not every Figaro, not every opera singer, is a good actor - but Terfel’s acting skills make the role his, and allow us to understand what Figuero is thinking, feeling, scheming. And yowza, what a sexy guy! Wish I were Susannah!

thing is - bryn will have stage directions and character directions - from the DIRECTOR. anyone think of that? and its true - at this stage in the opera figaro is 'plebian', thats what is great figaro's 'evolution' as a character

Still beefy. Maybe a less beefy teddy bear than today. Happens to most of us.

@1walkuere Finally one more person, that recognizes him as a baritone, because he is not a bass-baritone (as he consideres himself).

Don’t confuse a singer’s vocal range with the range in a particular aria. The range in Mozart’s Figaro role is a mid-range baritone. However, Terfel is a bass baritone. The baritone voice overlaps tenor and bass. If the singer has a range on the lower end, he is a bass baritone, like Terfel. Check out Terfel singing the Toreador song from Carmen. It is LOW. I believe it is in the bass range. Early in his career, Terfel sang Mozart, like Figaro. Opera singers, male and female, are encouraged to wait to sing heavier roles like Wagner (eg, the Ring cycle) and Puccini until later. They could damage their voices if they attempt these roles too soon. Terfel sings these heavier roles today. Mozart is easier on the voice than Wagner,, in part, because the Mozart-era orchestra is smaller than the size of the Wagner. Besides having a larger orchestra, Wagner opera music is much louder and more dramatic. Remember, the vocalist must be able to project louder than the orchestra to be heard throughout the opera house - and opera voices are not microphoned, I’m not an opera expert. I read and watch a lot about opera online, and from the Met Opera Live in HD series at the movies - because it interests me. Probably more than you wanted to know!

Like andrewoconnorblue said, it depends on the director, and I'll add also the set/costume designer. The way they decorated everything, it looks like Middle Ages, and not an 18th century noble household. I think that's where the vulgaryti is coming from. Also, Bryn's crazy facial expression of course. It's quite funny actually the way his eyes seem to be about to pop out when he's straining =)

Anyone have the full Met 1998 broadcast? It used to be on KZfaq a few years back but it is gone now.

Here you go! It’s phenomenal. m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hbuKfbGLxsq1cYU.html BTW, try to catch a University/ music school production of Figaro. Last year I saw it for $26 - twice - in a small theater at USC/Colburn School. I loved it. I keep waiting for the Met Opera Live in HD series to show it.

All Antilla said was her own opinion. No need to insult other peole here. And how do you know that you are then "knowledgeable" about the issue? Things like this are subjective. Notice how she didn't criticize his singing, but the overall presentation - one is allowed to have perosnal opinion about such things.

Figaro is not an aristocratic character like the Count ! You cannot blame Terfel for making him appear "plebeian", because that's what he is !

Good Figaro! He conveys the spirit of being an intelligent peon. (Some Figaros are too "heroic"... The character of Figaro needs to be a "noble slave", not an "enslaved nobleman".)
