From Trettondagskonsert 2010 - Stars (Les Miserables)
There, out in the darkness
A fugitive running
Fallen from God
Fallen from grace
God be my witness
I never shall yield
Till we come face to face
Till we come face to face
He knows his way in the dark
Mine is the way of the Lord
Those who follow the path of the righteous
Shall have their reward
And if they fall as Lucifer fell
The flame, the sword!
Stars
In your multitudes
Scarce to be counted
Filling the darkness
With order and light
You are the sentinels
Silent and sure
Keeping watch in the night
Keeping watch in the night
You know your place in the sky
You hold your course and your aim
And each in your season
Returns and returns
And is always the same
And if you fall as Lucifer fell
You fall in flame!
And so it must be
for so it is written
On the doorway to paradise
That those who falter
and those who fall
Must pay the price!
Lord let me find him
That I may see him
Safe behind bars
I will never rest
Till then
This I swear
This I swear by the stars!

Now THIS is how the role is meant to be sung. Rich, deep voice with power that pop singers can never match--marvelous. Has he ever played Javert on stage?

Everyone commenting on this comparing it to Quast seem oblivious to the fact that Terfel is, in this video, riding a 60+ piece orchestra with no microphone. And on top of that, his consonants are still crystal clear.

This is one of the best versions of "Stars" that I've ever heard. I love the power of the orchestra, and how Bryn Terfel uses his vibrato, especially on the word "fall". I've always believed that note should be vibrato free.

I recently had the opportunity to hear Bryn in concert. It was just him and a pianist onstage and it was absolutely marvelous! I will say I very much prefer him in that setting. I personally don't think his voice is right for the majority of popular musicals, though I did enjoy his rendition of "If I Were A Rich Man" from Fiddler. I also think he would make for a very...interesting phantom...though perhaps he shouldn't actually take on the role. As a side note, the control he has over his voice is awe-inspiring. Yes, he obviously has a lot of power in his fortissimo, but his pianissimo is to die for as well. If you ever get to see this man live in concert, don't pass it up.

If you're unfamiliar with the actual Theatrical rendition, then you're probably of the impression that this was a rather emotionless performance. However, Javert is somewhat emotionless so The song itself tends to be less emotional. The point is, Terfel was right on the money. But as for the pronounced consonants, he is singing without a microphone of any type and in that situation, the audience wouldn't be able to hear t's and s's. This man knows what he's doing.

Easily the best performance of Javert I've ever heard. Just saw the recent revival, have listened to the Symphonic Recording, and OBC recording. The fact is, he's singing this without a head-mic or a lapel-mic (as far as I can tell). The reason he is spitting out his consonants the way he is, is because he is a trained opera professional who is used to singing over a 52 pc orchestra, without amplification. He is doing that here, as well. Not to mention, the orchestra is ON STAGE with him, not in the pit or below the stage. The physics of what he does here makes it a good performance, but the reason he is the best, IMO, is because his voice has the right color for it. Every performance of Javert has some baritone who just bottoms out on the low stuff or cheats out by growling/whispering the lower parts. Plus, Bryn's musical interpretation is great. No rushing, he just sings it as an introspective prayer, until the end, when he opens it up. Plus the last note is sung with ease, not made more than it needs to be, as it isn't very high in tessitura. As usual, a masterclass in singing from the great Welshman. My only qualm with Bryn is that his English always has the tinge of his native Welsh in it. But I can get over it.

He disguises his Welsh accent in non-Welsh songs, but he always pronounces the words fully & ends of words whether in Welsh or not. Surely if you can here a tinge of Welsh, it is preferable in song to an unmelodic English?! ha ha

@snarby21 opinion is subjective. Yours just happens to be wrong here :) I'm sorry - his facial expressions not withstanding - his voice conveys all of the emotion the song conjures, particularly in the final bars where his belt seems almost effortless. My guess is if he doesn't quite 'look' commited to the roll its possibly because he's committed to the idea of not falling down the rest of what looks to be a rather rickety staircase for his rather solid frame (hmm...drool).

Brynford would be a very scary Javert for sure and he'd sing the shit out of that part. You'd have to have Alfie Boe singing Valjean, or a tenor equally robust. And why not??? I suppose it might break the bank, but it would be worth it for a one-off.

Hasn't got the right voice? The guy is a baritone who has sang in more opera houses than most people can think of, of course he has the "right voice" for a Musical Theatre baritone role. And as for comparing him to Norm Lewis, there is literally no comparison to be had.

@snarby21 You are really completely wrong. Bryn Terfel, who has dedicated his career to telling stories with his voice, Perhaps you are mistaking the fact that he doesn't scream and get hoarse for lack of feeling. Or maybe that the presentation is stupid with the staircase, but you cannot believe that Bryn Terfel is phony, he lives and dies onstage, simply watch him perform any role, I beg you. This is one of the most imaginative singers of the century

Okay, okay, I want to like this, but I can't really. Terfel clearly has the power and range to sing this well, and he's going for it, but the orchestra around him is set up to drown him out almost completely (at least in the recording here)-- and they're also playing it fast as well as in kind of a 'kitsch, chintzy way. I'd much rather hear him sing it just by himself in a massive room, him and a microphone. You know?

Great singing. And the orchestra was good for most of it, but the arrangement made the very end sound for a brief moment like it was a mistake (just so used to the stage musical version). Pretty sure terfel is singing unmic'd here (any rigging usually for recording). At least that's what it sounds like to me (it's why he's enunciating so strongly to us). I've certainly been able to hear him unmic'd crystal clear over an orchestra. Quast's style may sound better to you, but he would be completely inaudible in the same situation. Very different singing styles.

I'm not surprised you deleted your comment before I can respond Let me tell you something, you are close minded. You view this song in a vacuum, and refuse to accept interpretations which contain different qualities as your favorite version. This is not in the context of the musical, nor is it meant to be an homage to the style of musical theater, it is simply a different interpretation, and you would rather pretend to have a refined taste in theater than accept it as simply a vocal performance
