Thank you Hugh. I decided quite early on; whilst watching the C15 climb those hills, that if your bike could manage that arduous journey, then you would manage yours. Thank you for your openness and warmth despite the Scottish wind! I'm not a religious person, but throughout I have had you in my thoughts and I am so glad that the operation has been successful. You look such a lot better. Despite probably never meeting these people who watch your films, there is a genuine warmth and friendship over the airwaves.

Tom how nice of you to give such a nice comment. I have recovered well from the surgery though because of a hernia the surgeon had to dissect out to get my bowel out the way I've a lot of discomfort on a bike saddle! I'm also facing further treatment as my PSA has not dropped to zero. I have had so much comfort from the lovely comments complete strangers have given. I have to get out to that garage and fit a new main shaft bush. I know I'm procrastinating. Then I must be brave and at least go for a wee run on the wee C15. Thanks again.

@@Tonyv1951 Just saw this Tony. That is so kind. The C15 is out of action just now. I fried all the electrics including the Boyer ignition. I am putting it back to points, hopefully soon. I have just done a scooter trip which I filmed but most people aren't so interested. I hope to get that up in the next two weeks. Thanks for your support.

Sorry to hear of your trials Hugh. My thoughts are with you, and I wish you a full recovery. I love the way you work on the C15. I had one as a youngster when I was a student around 1970 - 72. I had two actually, a 1961 version, and one from 1966 which was a non runner. I found it lying in a garden covered in long grass and bought it for £6. Gradually, because I was an ignorant and ham fisted mechanic , I seized the piston on the 1961 engine and eventually blew the big end up. Over use of gasket cement, I now realise, blocked oil ways. I was using the cheap non runner 1966 bike as a donor, including the front forks after a T-bone crash with a car which suddenly pulled out from a filling station. Later, when the 1961 bike had so much of the 1966 one in it, I swapped the best bits back onto the 1966 frame, and got myself a more valuable machine. I am rather ashamed to admit to having been such a terrible bodger and neglectful owner, but at least when i sold it, and put the money towards an A10 side car outfit, the bike was running well and looked rather nice. It was so well set up then, that I could start it with my hand, and I was not a massive chap. I doubt I was even ten stone. These little BSAs took me up and down the A1 from Newcastle to London every six weeks during that part of my university time. What adventures I had on them. I am now toddling about on a 1997 Honda CB250. What a sweet engine that its, but I miss the rasp of the single of old.

Tony I am so ashamed I have not replied to this. I just noticed it today. You must be just slightly older than me. I started as a student in '73. What an interesting yarn. I am so impressed you drove from Newcastle to London. Honda make superb engines. I'm afraid BSA didn't and yet we love them so much. Enjoy your adventures on your CB250.

Sidney thank you. I will be getting swell headed! But it is nice to have work appreciated. Healthwise, I feel great. I still have slightly elevated PSA levels which are being monitored. A scan in November showed no cancer. That is brilliant. I can't wait for spring to get out on the old beast despite its imperfections and horrendous loss of oil. I have jobs to do before then. Fit new points and condenser. Fit a stay up float in the carb. Reseal the timing side again. Change the oil. Clean the oil tank filter and engine filter. Fit new oil lines. And my Christmas present, a new stainless rack. Thank you for your prayers.

A warm reminder of why hundreds of thousands of us motorcyclists all over the world ride with you each year concerning prostrate cancer. With the C15‘s low compression ratio of 8.0/1 there’s not going to be an issue with fuels. That gearbox-oil must be escaping either in the form of vapour or getting burned with combustion, difficult to ascertain when there’s no surface tell-tale signs. Topping up balances things out with the other option being a strip-down to check the mating surfaces on the casings which can be remedied with applying a good quality heat resistant silicone. It’s an arduous affair and must be done meticulously, dry oil free casings. Allowed the casings on my A65L (which I bought as a 19year old in 76 in London) to be not completely tightened left overnight, following day tightened completely (evenly!) all round to spec and didn’t start the engine (just to be sure) another day later. This helped reduce general oil consumption with zero gearbox loss of oil. I’m curious on how far that 11.5Lit tank takes you or, how many Litres (maybe even gallons) are needed when re-fuelling. Wish you a comfortable recovery, Best greetings from Düsseldorf 😉
@hughferrier5837
@hughferrier5837 Жыл бұрын
Wow a message from Düsseldorf ! Thank you. Yes, this prostate cancer is so common. I would advise any man over 50 to get checked annually. I have rebuilt the engine twice. My feeling is that the leak is from the end of the mainshaft at the bush into the outer timing case where the oil then gets drawn into the engine. The petrol tank holds just over two gallons. I think I get about 80-85 miles to a gallon. Thank you for your message and for the advice.

Michael thank you. I'm a youngster of 68! I was off the bike for a while after surgery. I had a couple of wee jobs to do on it and took it for a wee run a week ago. About 2 miles from home there was a colossal bang as unburned fuel hit the hot exhaust. No power. No spark. All the LED bulbs fried as well as the electronic ignition. Oh dear. I have bought a used distributor and will go back to points ignition. The battery is also capute. Maybe this week I'll get it running again. I'd like to get another wee film out there. My PSA levels are higher than they should be but a recent scan showed nothing, so that is great. My C15 is a bonny wee bike if a bit aggravating. It is sitting in the garage leaking oil (quite a bit!) and waiting till the winter is past. I was starting it every couple of weeks to avoid wet sumping. The wretched thing now will not start. This is a frequent little trick it has over the winter. I need to brave the cold and clean the jets in the carb. Take care, Hugh

I am really glad to hear that things are going well for you Hugh. In terms of the C15 and oil leaks? Well, sometimes we have to accept it is what it is. It should'nt be, but it's part of their character. I remember, back in the 60s, a friend of mine had a very highly tuned Cub (silly compression ratio, gas flowed, over carburated etc.) We tried lapping the cases on plate glass with grinding paste, extra breathers...in the end, it was down to copious quantities of red Hermetite! Hugh what a fabulous video of your trip. The C15 did very well and sounded great all the way round. Quite the feat for an old 250 single making that climb. I have travelled the Beallach na Ba road a number of times but only in a car. We were on our way to Torridon where we climbed Liathach, Beinn Alligin and Beinn Eighe and your video brought back wonderful memories. Perfect for me, the old Ceefer combined with the mountains of my youngers years. Glad to hear you are recovering from your surgery. I had similar problems last year and ended up going for a number of tests culminating in a biopsy. I also ended up being fitted with a catheter for a number of weeks. Not at all dignifying and it made me quite depressed. We men need to be more open with prostate issues and not be embarrassed to talk about them and see a doctor with any symptoms. Touch wood I came out clear of any cancer and medications seem to be doing the trick at the moment. Your video reminded me, yet again, that we have to go for the adventures while we are able. Again thank you so much for sharing your bike and the ride and I wish you all the best of health as you recover. (Oh and thanks for the laugh at watching you eat chinese food from the lid!) David

David your comments are always welcome. I didn't realise you had been over to Scotland and know the Highlands well. Glad my film brought back memories. Maybe many years ago we met in the hills. My cousin Martin, who I mention in the film, and myself did Liathach, Beinn Alligin and Beinn Eighe way back maybe '72 and '73. We camped both times behind Liathach. This area was quieter then. I'm recovering well. So glad to have that catheter behind me. I am still a bit incontinent but it has improved a lot. That old prostate, well I don't have one now, causes a lot of problems. I think men are talking about it more. I am so fortunate I had benign enlargement to start with as the doctors were keeping an eye on me, though not too well during COVID. I am looking forward to getting out again. Making the film has helped a lot as I recover. It actually takes longer to make the film than it does to do the trip. But you relive it a bit as you edit. I didn't finish that fried rice. It was too much hassle and too much mess! As always good to hear from you. I trust you keep well after your scare. Kind wishes, Hugh

Road surfaces!!! Highland Council don't believe in repairing road surfaces! They expect us to be hard men up here! But it is very beautiful out and about here. The C15 is a great wee bike. It is a real joy to drive. It would be great if the Indian manufacturers made a copy, but an oil tight one. They have made a Goldstar, sort of. But its the heart, driving a 1959 bike.

Hello Michael I really appreciate the encouragement. I'm struggling to use the wee bike just now. I have a hernia which had to be dissected out to allow the surgeon to get at my prostate and is now massive causing a lot of discomfort especially on two wheels! I will have to bite the bullet and go for a wee run.

Yes - those oil leaks Hugh is sorting so expertly, are very reminiscent of the ones I had to deal with but never solved in the early 1970s. My efforts to try and solve them led to the destruction of big ends and a seizure in two different episodes. Unlike Hugh, I stupidly resorted to putting half a tube of gasket cement on the cylinder base and ended up with blocked oil ways. The stupidities of youth! You live and learn...

Thanks Frank I am very fortunate to live up here. It was a great day. I am feeling well and starting to get excited at the thought of going out on two wheels again. The surgeon said to give it 8 weeks. I'm afraid it will be my scooter first as it has an electric start!!

Mikey I am so sorry not to get back sooner. That is very rude. My 96 year old mum passed away on Monday night. A really good old age. She was a lovely old Christian lady and is 'home' now. You will notice I am a bit of a loner from my films. You and Mike are so much more gregarious and sociable. It would be nice to meet you though and admire bikes. I live off the Struie Road about a mile outside Alness. Is that a Yamaha SR125 in Mikes last films of doing the NC500? You have it a nice colour!

@@mikeonabike4791 That is very young to loose your mum. I'm getting near 70! I so admire people that keep their first bikes. I wrote off my first, a Jaws 250. I am so longing for Spring to get back out. There's been salt on the roads already. Thanks for your kind remarks.

Thanks again for the video Hugh. These are stunning sights for a Yorkshire man from Leeds. Glad to hear your on the mend after your surgery. As I mentioned before I had a C15 1959, Green like yours, It was about 2 years old when purchased in 1961. I do not recall it having a choke lever. I know that you have changed the carburetor on your bike however do you know if the original would have had an automatic choke? or it may be my memory letting me down!

Hello Leonard and thank you for taking the time to comment and for being so positive. I would love to see my wee C15 at two years old. Your memory is not letting you down. The Monobloc carb has no choke. You flood the float chamber with the 'tickler' when cold starting and that enriches the mixture. It works well. The carb that was on my bike when I bought it was for later bikes, a Concentric and it has both choke and 'tickler'. I have only passed by Leeds when I went to Sheffield to buy my C15. You can see I was pretty desperate to get one !!!
