I work at a Ford dealership and there's so many instances where people go 10k miles on semi synthetic with EcoBoost engines. For some reason 100% oil life in the vehicle settings is equivalent to 10k~ miles so people just wait for that oil change required light, not realizing they are 5k miles over what the sticker says. That oil normally comes out stinky, black, and dirty.... Nearly looking like diesel. It's even worse when people get their FIRST change at 10k. I feel bad for the people out there that just don't know better. I try to explain in our inspections that they shouldn't go that far, but the advisors come back and complain about the customer being angry at us. Then they tell us to stop explaining it because they're too baby-like to handle a disgruntled customer. Hopefully Ford changes they oil life meters to NOT be SO far.

It’s what ford wants motorcraft oil and filter and the car will tell you when it needs changed. Why is the manufacturer and dealer not on the same page?
@xeutoniumnyborg1192
@xeutoniumnyborg1192 Жыл бұрын
I'm surprised Ford hasn't shortened the oil change intervals if for nothing else to reduce the warranty expense totals under ESP due to the need to replace engines. Sadly, we humans are made lazy by technology, and most motorists rely on that stupid oil reminder to tell them the oil needs to be changed. When I worked at GMC, new truck buyers received a coupon to get their first oil change free of charge. Coupon had the mileage interval the truck should be brought in printed on the certificate. Ford should start offering that to its new car buyers.

There should be class action lawsuits for manufacturers programming their computers with such ridiculous oil change intervals that are known to damage engines.
@brycemartin572
@brycemartin572 7 ай бұрын
The engine will last just a little over 100k if you go with 10k oil change intervals so Ford isn't losing any money on warranty engine replacements and not many people that buy new cars keep their cars for more than 2-3 years so it is the secondary used market where this becomes an issue. Ford will keep the 10k oil change interval on paper because then they can show a lower cost of ownership on the dealer fact sheet.

A tip - lots of oil pans/engines leave about 0.25-0.5 quart or more of oil in the system after draining. With the drain plug still off, pour some oil in and wait until it runs clean out the bottom. This will help push out some of the remaining old oil. I have heard that airplane mechanics do it like this.

I made the mistake of buying an oil change package from the dealer (rhymes with "Spotto-bation") when I bought my F150. The price made the per oil change cost about the same as doing it myself or taking to an independent shop. The sales guy sold it as top-tier products, factory recommended maintenance, blah, blah, blah. Figured it would be good to have all that dealer maintenance on the Carfax. The reality is they use the cheapest oil they can find, as well as crappy no-name filters. Just stay away from dealers, unless you are forced to get recall or warranty work done.

Just did the oil in my wife's Expedition. My dealership uses Mobil 1 Full Synthetic, which is what I used. It does adhere to the SN-Plus so good to go there. I do like Wix over the Motocraft filter, but per many, the Motocraft is a top-notch filter. I will say what a PITA on that Expedition (2016). The big Underbody shield that has to be removed that covers the trans pan, ugh. What a mess. The dealer did the last oil change and only kept 2 of the fasteners on it. They should have done the right thing and replaced them, but no...so the shield essentially dragged on the ground. I voiced my displeasure to them...got the "meh, whatever" from them. It did NOT get replaced (I don't have the fasteners yet, and I need to get one of the brackets that they bent to crap, and it's backordered). That drain plug was on so tight I needed a cheater bar on my 3/8" socket. It's supposed to be at 20 ft.lbs...they had it WAY WAY WAY over that. What is it about these techs using the 1/2" ugga-dugga and using a torque spec of 5 to 7 ugga-duggas. ARGH!!!! Getting to that filter was a SUPER MAJOR PITA! Side mounted and hidden under another shield at the front of the vehicle. Total blind operation to get it in/out. :( I remember the meetings on that actually...the engineers wanted to hang it like the F-Series, but studio claimed it would change the underbody look (how? we don't know, but studio is all powerful at Ford...). Anyway, literally 200 miles on the truck after the oil change...it's black. We have it changed every 4K miles usually, and it is all highway miles...so that black is just going to happen now (it does have 130K miles on it, so it could just be build up).

With base-up canister filters such as yours (well, mostly base-up) I like to fill the oil filter with fresh oil before installing. This will help prevent dry start after an oil change. With your angled oil filter, you could fill it about 75% and not worry about spilling any oil when installing the filter. Also, before reinstalling any underbody shields or plates, I do the test run and make sure there are no leaks. So if there is a leak, I won't have to pull the shields off again to fix the leak. Very good video! Thank you!

We bought our Explorer new. It came with a service plan for 6500 mile oil changes. When that expired, I just kept the 6500 maint schedule. I take it to the dealer to get serviced only so that it can be a certified trade-in when we decide to buy a new one. My salesman says they'll pay about $2-3k more if it's a certified vehicle, which, according to him, the only thing required is all oil changes done by a dealer. When we started having to pay for the oil changes, it cost us $35. Then they went to 49.99. Now they charge 74.99. I'm wondering if it's worth it now. Even though inflation went way up, I can still buy the oil/filter myself for about $25, which is a 1/3 what they charge now. I use Motorcraft oil/filter on every Ford vehicle I've owned and never had issues. We do drive the Explorer pretty hard, but the oil is never bad looking when it has 6500 miles on it. When I do the math, at $75 oil changes, I still get paid back with the certified status for about 13 years. After that, the $2-3k I get for that status washes out. Also, I wonder sometimes if they are doing the oil change properly. I often look under when I get home to make sure I don't see any leaks, and almost every time I see oil on the filter in the same spot, like they didn't change the filter. Next trip, I will mark the filter just to make sure it's not the same one. I also purchased the 125k full warranty from Ford just before the reg 35k ran out. So, hopefully, I'm good till we trade in. Also, I'm a mechanic, and it's hard for me to swallow the $75 for a $25 oil change.

Have had 3 oil changes done and the Mobil One lasts nearly twice as long as the Castrol. Two changes with Mobil One, one Castrol. My garage isn't tall enough to raise the truck so I've bought Mobil One and paid $20 for a local shop to change with my oil. The Castrol change was a coupon I had. Regularly checking the monitor showed a faster drop in remaining life when using Castrol. I think it was semi synthetic, but after about 4 months it was down to below 10%.
