Just upgraded to full fibre this week (end of April 2021). Am on Community Fibre and I'm getting 900+ down and 900+ up when wired - and around 700+ down/up when on Wi-Fi. It's amazing. Am also using their VoiP service for my analogue phone and kept my landline number. Through this I am able to make UK landline and mobile calls for free, for an additional £10 per month, plus if I'm abroad I can use my mobile to call home. It's INSANE. Loving the full fibre revolution!

After watching your video i'm on the phone cancelling my package before it's too late. Not a fan of the router settings and security is a big thing for me considering i stream. Thanks man!

Thanks for the video! Will be getting full-fibre 900 soon too. How about looking into getting Ubiquiti dream machine? With their ids/ips enable, you should be able to get your max download speed throughput and theoretically a good upload speed too.

Hi Kevin, I've only just seen this video, prompted by the fact I will get a 900 full fibre installed next week (FTH only just available here now). As I have a steel walled workshop at the top of our rear garden I have been using a Zyxel Multi X AC3000 Try-Band Mesh system attached to an EE Hub to get a wifi signal inside the workshop. Would you have any idea if this will still work when I plug it into the BT Smart Hub next Friday?

Should be getting mine fitted soon, would love to see what hardware you get and how it works. I’m guessing it’s more than just a simpler smart hub.

If you want to pair devices on a certain band, disable the other band, connect all devices you need connected then enable both bands again. It usually works 👍🏻

What other router would you recommend as don't want to pay loads for a replacement router for BT 900 when i get it installed in May .

Mark Thomas did a segment on Channel 4 in the 1990s where he mentioned that in the event of a national emergency where customers phones were shut down that the only phone networks that would be available would be public telephones. Not sure about the current situation however. However there's still a need for a public telephone service run by BT.

Great video - I am with bt 900 but switched my homehub to Netgear Nighthawk AX8 8 i am getting really good wifi speeds of around 650-700 and download speds averaging with ethernet around 121.50 MBps / which is around 965mb... my upload speeds however have been really good now with solid 114mb and never fluctuates with my netgear router, the homehub however for some odd reason kept capping at 50mb every now and then... hopefully you find the right router or mesh kit for you.

Use 3rd party routers. ASUS do great routers to do some advance setups. Rt-AX86U

I have BT 900 fibre but Im using an ASUS RT-AX88U. By playing around with MTU and MRU settings I have a stable 920 down and 110 up.

Thinking of switching to BT Full Fibre 900 soon from Virgin, mainly due to upload speeds. I wouldn't be touching BT with their stock router though. I'm currently running an EdgeRouter Lite with my own Wifi access point for advanced features. There's lots of people on BT forums complaining that there's a firmware bug affecting upload speeds, so it may be worth trying a better router, or seeing if you can force a firmware update (providing one exists for this)

Can't you connect your 2.4ghz devices on the channel that does both..?... or does it not see the devices..?

My Contract BT 900 is ending after two years this month, had no problems but had to buy an UDM Pro and points around the house for coverage. Getting roughly 700 wirelessly on iPhone 14. Thinking of going to someone cheaper as few more ISPs do 900 now, when bought none of them did it.

I average about 500 down and 85 up and had issues with the hub, the 1st one was when I was asked to reset the hub which made it worse going down to 40 to 50 upload the download was the same. When I spoke to them thay said it was a common problem which happened to a lot of people which resulted in them sending me a hub but the old version hub which made connection terrible, thay sent a new one when I told them. It’s like banging your head against the wall speaking to them, one person said to me “it’s more then you actually need” another time thay said which happened a few times is “everything looks ok are end there must be a problem with your wires or device”. It just goes back and forth with no problem solved and a complete waste of time on the phone.

So I got the full 900 but whenever I do a speed test, the highest result I've had was 290Mbps down and 95 up but I should be getting a minimum of 450 Mbps to my understanding. Also, that's what BT says as my Stay Fast Guarantee (SFG) . I've given it almost a week but the result is pretty much the same. Whenever I do a speed check on my BT app, it shows that from the cabinet to my house is within SFG but between the router and my devices is where approximately 300 Mbps is showing.

Kinda lucky you've got almost gigabit speeds, there is no ISP (accept for Hyperoptic) in London that does gigabit WiFi, it's kinda disappointing tbh

Think ile stick with virgin media, bt want £60 just for the broadbans so then theres the fone on top thats going to be around another £20, with virgin for £100 a month i get 620mbps up 41mbps down, fully unlimted mobile sim card with calls texts an data all included, then i get talk unlimted home phone, an two tv boxs with all the tv channels including netflix an sports an movies, think i would be a fool to give up all that just for bts broadband, plus i know virgins 1gb broadband is coming sometime this year an as im on the top pack it means i get a free upgrade everytime the speed get increased.

Oftcom should mandate a tighter band difference from what you pay to what you get , getting half of what you paying for at peak on fttp especially is unacceptable. DSL etc mandate that brown cannot call a package super fast 2 if it’s below 50 mbs instead of say 80 mbs (typically 60) so fibre that is unaffected by signal interfering etc to go from 600 to 450 or 450 to 250 mbs and be ok is just wrong the most I find acceptable would be 30-50 mbs difference no more it’s like buying a car and finding out you have to 3 of the gears unusable 3out of 5 times that’s what lemon laws were made for , this change was not sprung on isps and has been coming ever since the gigabyte rollout to schools and colleges 5 years ago. It was clear this was going to happen so they should be forced to expand if they offer the services

You're incorrect that outsiders can access your internal network if they access the BT public WIFI- they cannot. The external WIFI is hived off and separate from the internal WIfi.

Interesting Video, thanks for your insight. To be honest, and I don't know what your network looks like now, but the BT Smarthub is the fist thing to be ripped out of the network. Becuase they are dogs**t. Cheap old crap with mediocre wifi. You have spent all your time and effort cabling your new network, why not get yourself a Unifi Dream Machine or Dream Machine Pro?

Alright Kevin, great video. BT have been the worst company I’ve ever dealt with for my internet in the past. The restrictions on the router with regard the wireless setup and all the sharing issues is also something that I’d find to be a big problem. Anyway, the real interesting point for me in your video is the upload speed. Obviously like you, I’d want the best possible as well so I could use higher bit rates etc. for my uploads. Don’t get me wrong, 70Mb/s is great but I’d personally be expecting a lot more than that. That’s probably the biggest sticking point about your service that I can see. The download is just unbelievable and in practical terms there’s nothing that’d come close to touching it, it really is fantastic. But I’d really like to see upload speeds that are more fitting with that awesome download speed. At the moment I’m unable to get anything like a good physical internet connection because I’m living in a block of flats. That said though, and like you’ve had to do before you got your physical connection, I’m using a 4G phone connection for everything. I actually have 2 sims from 3, one for my phone and the other goes into a 4G router. The router is actually really good with its 2.4 and 5GHz wireless and it also has 4 gigabit Ethernet ports. I have a small 5 port switch as well. The obvious problem with using mobile internet, as you well know, is simply the reliability of the speeds. Mine can go really nuts depending on the time of day, obviously due mostly to call traffic at the mast that I’m connected to. My download can be anything from 40 to around 90 Mb/s my latency is around 45ms which is a bit tough for gaming :) but the real surprise is the upload which is usually fairly consistent at around 30Mb/s. To be honest though and seeing as I’m looking at all this from the KZfaqr’s point of view, 30Mb/s for upload is really good for what it is. I get charged £18.50 per sim with unlimited everything. So even if I just look at the unlimited upload speed, £18.50 is ridiculously cheap for the value I get out of it. 3 are supposedly going 5G in my area but they’ve been saying that for over 18 months. As far as I’m concerned 3 are just as full of crap as BT and although I’ve had some slight issues with their service, I’d be a total idiot if I made any complaints about the value of the service. If I eventually get 5G then maybe my uploads will get much better. Although that would require a new router and the 5G ones are very expensive, although I do have a 5G phone and a small box that tethers it to a gigabit switch. Anyway, sod the boring stuff :) Here’s some geeky stuff I think you’ll be interested in. I’ve been experimenting with upscaling to 8K and also staying 10 bit all the way through my workflow for some game stuff. While I’m not sure if the game stuff is actually 10 bit properly although the GPUs do 10 bit, I’ve tried some 10 bit capturing using my Blackmagic card, editing 10 bit and using a 10 bit upload. Here’s an example of something that I’ll put live later today or tomorrow. This also has the advantage of being 8K upscaled. Would mind taking a look and letting me know what you think. Here’s the basic spec for the test. Game maxed out on its settings for 1080/60 GPU set to 10 bit output, although I’m not sure the game graphics are 10 bit for SDR but there does seem to be a benefit. The GPU is captured on another machine using my BMD card and is captured 10 bit totally uncompressed YUV. The captures are edited in a 10 bit project in an 8K project, my NLE uses Lanczos 3 for the upscaling. I then export direct from the timeline to H.265 Main 10 using NVENC, this is a 10 bit file 8K/60 at 400Mb/s but is only 4:2:0 for the chroma sub sampling. Now while I’m not sure that the game to start of with is really 10 bit and despite using 4:2:2 all the way through the workflow and it gets turned 4:2:0 at the end by the final H.265 encode (BTW there is a 4:2:2 option for this but it requires X265 which way too slow) this is the best encoding I’ve ever done for KZfaq. Now I’m always very critical of what I do but I’ve immediately noticed a real difference in the resolution for even just the KZfaq 1080 stream, as you’d expect anyway because it forces the better codec for 1080 but the 4K and 8K streams look ace although I’m only on 4K for monitoring. But the banding, especially in the sky, seems to be massively reduced. I’m actually very shocked at how this looks even on the 1080 stream, considering that the KZfaq streams are 8 Bit 4:2:0 I really didn’t expect to see these benefits to the colour and dynamic range. What I find hilarious about BT is that for a communications company, they are pathetic at being able to reliably communicate with you. What have you done about the router? I have a Draytek on my ADSL connected to a Ubiquiti USG and then to a 16 port Ubiquiti switch which feeds a couple of Ubiquiti AP's and wired ethernet ports round the house. As you pointed out, I did this so I could have separate 2.5Ghz and 5Ghz channels and VLAN off the 2.4Ghz for my IOT devices. I am due to get BT Fibre 900 on 1st Feb and obviously dont want to use the BT supplied router. What did you go with?

Does nobody really care that gigabit uploads are so slow, 100up =100down and 200 and 500 and 900 are all surported upload speeds too. is anybody getting same up and same down as im getting 200mbts down and only 30mbts up.

Bt Wi-fi does not give any access to your own network. Total rubbish mate sorry! It's on a different Wi-fi ssid with its own virtual link down your broadband. What's more it is lower priority than your own traffic, so so one walking by can only use all your broadband when you are not. If you are using most of it they will only get slow speeds. So it is secure and it doesn't impact what you have paid for!

BT are a joke. I cannot upgrade my existing line to fibre even tho OR says I can. Been through so much crap from BT. So I ordered a new line to see if they can do that and now they’ve confirmed installed in 2 weeks. So I’ll end up with 2 Broadband’s but I’ll moan after I get fibre. Total joke BT

My experiences with BT they are totally clueless about any technology. The new routers are not Wi-Fi 6 compatible which has been out for least 2 year.. The BT routers are total rubbish, I strongly recommend you buy Asus or Netgear or a alien wi-fi 6 router, there is a new standard out now which is Wi-Fi 6E which is the proper full standard...
